Well considering I tend to buy a lot of Penguin Classics and similar books, covers actually have no influence in my choice of books. I go by recommendations (including recommendations from librarians or from the book shop), authors I like, sometimes I just pick up random books that have interesting titles, etc.
★ Jess wrote: "I can forgive reviews before the book is released, discussing how excited you are, as long as there is no rating attached. That really bothers me."Jess I have no problems with reviews before a book is released as long as the book has been read. This girl hasn't read the book at all and is giving a score in anticipation of enjoying it. I do hope she likes it.
Kathryn wrote: "Still - the rating system as a whole is a bit pointless anyway. What I like, you might hate and vice versa. I have others who are the opposite as well. If they dislike a book I prick up my ears and go seek it out as I usually enjoy it - lol!
Brenda wrote: "I was recently talking to someone about this issue, and she said people rate a book 1 star before publication because they DON'T LIKE THE COVER!"No way!? That's terrible - poor author.
Popped in to say I've just been to cinema with my twin and my niece to see August Osage County. What a train wreck of a family. Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Chris Cooper are brilliant. Thanks Mum and Dad for the normal-ness of my upbringing:)

Hi guys bit behind in reading comments, but I totally agree how can you rate a book before you read it? There are some authors that I just love their work and know I will love the novel before I start, however, I have also read other authors who I have loved and then their 4th book I have just hated. Lets read first so we can make a fair judgement.

But I had to chuckle at the sister-in-law(?) who thought the rating system was for how much she wanted to read a book!! I wonder if many people think like that!
On a personal note, I find Australia Day hard going. Our son Avery James Roulston died 17 years ago today age 6 months. Always feels like yesterday...

From the cold and the wind of the UK I'd like to wish all my friends in Australia a very happy Australia Day and I hope to get down there sometime in 2014! Have a great day!

Sorry that probably sounded a little callous. Thinking of you. Anniversaries are hard. I lost my son 16 years ago last November. I hope today is kind to you xx
Bit of ab exciting day for me... My boss who is like my dad to me in so many ways was honoured with an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) today for his work in youth work over the last 30 years...i am incredibly proud of him and just have to share with all! :D
Thanks Brenda, it is funny because I've heard the stories of when he and his brother were in their youth, people would say and warn others to stay away from those boys, they trouble and won't ever amount to anything in life...yet 30 years later he is recognized for his contribution to his community and his brother served in the navy for 28 years... Just goes to show we shouldn't judge a book by its cover... Sorry couldn't resist the pun ;) especially in light of recent discussions lol

44 years ago today I first set foot in Australia. Ever since then the Australian Nation has stopped to celebrate this momentous event. For that I am truly humble. First fleet? What do you mean first fleet?
LOL!

It's rather chilly in Sydney today too! Not summery at all.

My husband, who is English, just told me he thought Jimmy Barnes sounded like Elton John. Does anyone else think this is weird?
Angela wrote: "My husband, who is English, just told me he thought Jimmy Barnes sounded like Elton John. Does anyone else think this is weird?"Not when they're both singing, I assume - because Elton John actually sings with a tune... Even their speaking voices don't sound that similar to my way of thinking!

Shaun, would you like to pose your question here in this thread? We have one with discussion about your question, and it hasn't been chatted about in quite some time! So it'd be great if you got the ball rolling again here:)

I just saw The Wolf of Wall Street. It was hilarious! The whole audience was laughing out loud. Excellent acting too. (But you have to be able to put up with a lot of bare flesh, swearing and drug use.)

I hate heaps of swearing but I expect hubby will watch it as some stage so will see how o go with it. Hopefully the comedy will help :)
I'm watching, Angela. Are you sad for Nadal? But he's ahead a break, which he wasn't before - shame about the pain, but the meds must have kicked in... It is a shame that it seems to have put Wawrinka off - right when he should step up to make the most of it!!
I WAS sad for Nadal but it looks like he may be getting a second wind! Even though he is clearly in pain, he's powering through and throwing Wawrinka off balance. So much respect for him. Do you think he can come back?

That being said a cover is usually what makes me pick up a book in the first place. :P"
But you wouldn't rate a book by the cover though, would you?
