Is anybody going to see or seen The Book Thief? I am in two minds...loved the book will the movie do it justice? Comments and thoughts please.

For people interested in other books in the Japanese prisoner of war genre, two of the earliest works which had a big impact were James Clavell’s King Rat and Russell Braddon’s The Naked Island.

The Naked Island came out in 1952 and a year later I went to Japan as a Reuter correspondent. The details of the horror of being a Japanese prisoner of war aroused strong feelings against the Japanese among many Australians working in Japan. But foreigners in Tokyo, who worked with Japanese, were more inclined to forgiveness than “never forget”.

Interestingly, Braddon whose The Naked Island stirred up intense anti-Japanese feelings in Australia and opposition to trade with Japan, came out a few years later with End of a Hate, in which he wrote how he had come to a point of forgiveness.

I'm going to see it in Sydney on Tuesday. Markus Zusak will be there to talk about it. I think it will be a good movie even if it does not do the book justice.

Morning Alex thanks for the warning, but in Sungei Wang Plaza there is a small place that has always been 'clean' - have used them for some time. My first effort in Petaling St was a mistake. I checked all but three DVDs, and when I got home I found that one had a clear plastic disc - felt like a DVD - now used to scare the birds of the tomatoes! Only ever had one, which was a head camera in the cinema - now scaring the birds.

Morning Ian,
Bali for ten nights (5 in Ubud and 5 on the coast)getting there via KL as we don't like night flying, and the price was right - fly back to KL and a drive from KLIA to Malacca, then drive to Penang, and drive to KL, before flying home.
A quiet holiday i.e very little sight seeing as we have done most of the Malaysian sights already.

Sounds great. Drove to Ubud in 1955 on the then rough road through a terrain of rice paddies with President Sukarno, who added to his vast collection with purchases of art works from the top painters and sculptors resident in the small village. As a young Reuter correspondent had no money but bought a small painting. Wonder if it is worth anything now?

1955. It’s not that long ago! :-) And I think I previously mentioned to you that when I was based in Hong Kong for The New York Times I joined a Gurkha patrol along the border between Sarawak and Kalimantan in 1965. A couple of angry shots were fired from the Indonesian side but went harmlessly astray.

I knew you were with the Gurkhas on the border (1965), but I didn't know that you were in Ubud with Sukarno, when I was still in school(1955!) - you've aged very well if your photo on your home page is current :-o)

I had the pleasure of attending the launch of Kaz Delaney's new novel, Almost Dead this morning. It was a wonderful turn out at Charlestown Library, with Kaz in fine form. I met up again with Annie West and Lee Christine, PLUS I met for the first time Stacey Nash, S.E. Gilchrist and a couple of others.



She should have had writers cramp by the time she had finished!

Our forecast is a touch warmer after Monday:

I have a Mac, Angela. I was a little apprehensive about. Making the change at first, but was surprised at how user friendly it was to adapt to. I found it more difficult switching to Windows XP than switching from Windows to Mac. And it feels very sophisticated and elegant - when I have to use Windows now, I find it a very clunky system, in comparison.

And I'm not envying anyone living anywhere with temp's in the high 30's and 40's! Good luck to you all - keep up the fluids and sit in front of a fan if air conditioning isn't an option. It was 42 degrees on our back deck last Saturday, and that was more than enough for me - I went to ground in air-conditioning for the whole day!

Angela, if you have an Apple store handy, I found buying the one year Apple One on One support a good idea (it was $130 for a yr when I bought my Mac). You can register to have tutorials with an Apple staff member whenever you like for free with this plan. You can book an appointment to ask about any of the things you used to be able to do with Windows and can't work out how with Apple. I learnt some very useful things through this :-)

I've just come home from seeing Saving Mr. Banks which is all about Mary Poppins. It was good - a bit of a tear-jerker actually. I noticed a few people discreetly getting the tissues out. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson were both excellent.

I've seen the advertising of this one Phrynne and thought it looked like it would be good.

I would recommend it. It was well acted and very enjoyable. There was some really good stuff over the end titles where they played actual recording of the real P.L. Travers when she went to Hollywood to make the film.
