I sold our home on NSW South Coast (after James died) after discovering a nest of red bellied snakes under the house. A big mama one and countless little ones which the dogs kept trying to bring into the house. The big one used to sun itself on the front verandah. It did my head in, being there and no James to defend me and the dogs! I can face anything except snakes. House was on the market a month later!
Don't blame you Bette. I wouldn't have been able to cope either. I have never seen any snakes around here for which I am thankful.

Of course where I am now is coastal also and obviously has snakes; not that I've seen any. But now I do have a 6ft3in bro-in-law two streets away to rescue me. (my faux husband) :)

Oh dear, I don't blame you! What a horrifying thing to have to share your house with them!

Talking about snakes, we had this visitor a couple of days ago.
The Tiger Snake ended up slithering into a watering can at the back door. Alan then used a broom to push the watering can all the way to the front fence with the snake occasionally poking his head up and going WTF. Once the watering can was tipped over, the snake disappeared into the paddock towards the dam.
Oh gives me the creeps Vicki!! I can too easily visualize it being in one of those boots when I put it on:( Good for Alan, getting rid of it...I hope it doesn't return!
Brenda wrote: "Oh gives me the creeps Vicki!! As long as I know where they are, I'm happy. It's when I don't that it's a problem. :)

Got to 40.9 here (Vic North Central fire district) today. Expecting another hot one tomorrow. Christmas Day is looking good with a forecasted max of 30. :)
It does tend to get hotter (and colder) the further inland you go. All I can say is thank goodness for air con. I don't know how the pioneers did it.
Yikes, the heavens just opened. That wasn't expected. It brought down the temp 10C in seconds. The gutters overflowed in about the same time.
The word that springs to mind with cicadas is deafening. Incredible really that such a small critter can make that much noise.
Ashleigh, you have my sympathies. We were driving home from Melbourne yesterday and there was one area we went through that even driving on noisy tyres, windows up and air con on, the cicadas made if hard to hear anything else.

Vicki don't worry about the mowing, it won't be done tomorrow! And wow, I hope the rain has stopped again..you don't want flooding!

I'm with you there Ashleigh!
I'm with you there Ashleigh!
The rain stopped as quickly as it started. If its bucketed down for much longer, there would've been surface flooding. The magpies loved the rain. Wings spread and the lot.
Definitely, Brenda. Today was the first really hot day the baby magpies have encountered, so they really appreciated the rain. I've filled all the water bowls about four times today. One young magpie emptied three bowls (we have a variety of sizes for all the different birds) one after another. He knew how to stay cool. Too bad about the other birds. :)
I spent a few minutes making sure the bird bath was full today. When it's hot and dry they love having a splash in it.
We've often thought it'd be nice to have a bird bath, but our little dog hates a certain type of bird we have around here, so I think it would be mayhem!
The horrible myna bird! Chloe hates them, as soon as they squawk in the distance she barks at them, tries to chase them! It's funny really, I'm sure she thinks she can fly sometimes!
Funny it's just one bird. Are you referring to the Indian Myna or the Noisy Miner (same pronunciation - different spelling)? :) if its the Indian Myna, he's a smart dog.

It's the one that's not native, so Indian I think. The other one doesn't bother her :)

1) Too many snakes in this thread for my liking 2) Its too hot
3) ATAR of 87 today
4) Why is it so hot
I've been using the hot weather to play 'catch-up'; watching all of Season 3 of Downton Abbey. Yesterday afternoon, I was on the sofa sobbing my eyes out when Sybil died; so sad:(:( I have a friend coming to stay early January with the Season 4 dvd so I needed to be up to speed. But now, I want to see it, today :)

Atar 87, excellent Jess, good on you!
Allllright! the cool change is here, with rain. In a few minutes time, I'll be outside laying down on the lawn, soaking it up:)

Congrats Jess! You must be very happy :)
Can't say I blame Chloe. Mynas not my favourite either. Our dog has fun chasing seagulls on the beach when we go for a walk. Since she hasn't got a hope of catching them as she won't go in the water ( she will in the lake but not the beach) we let her go.Might get a quick swim in sometime today. Supposed to be 41 then retreat with air con. Winter has two advantages. It is cooler and the footy's on.

As to your other questions, "it's summer" will answer them all;)
