So! Let us discuss Chrestomanci, in my opinion, the bestest character! Any thoughts, perhaps?

I like the Chrestomanci series, but the adult Chrestomanci isn't my favorite character in the books. I think Cat Chance is more interesting than the dressing-gown obsessed Chrestomanci. Anyway, in many (most?) of the books the main characters are kids and Chrestomanci is only a minor character. I liked the whole series - my favorites are The Angel of Caprona and The Pinhoe Egg. Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorite authors - and I think she's a much better writer than The Richest Woman in Britain, She Who Must Not Be Named.
I agree. Diana Wynne Jones is ALLOT better than she who must not be named, and like you Diana Wynne Jones is my favorite authors. but I disagree with both of you with the best charachter in the serise. I profer the dragon, fiddle the cat and most of the furniture.
:) any way that's my opinion.

"It was funny how you said it~ I like her..and I like Diana Wynne Jones, too. Yeah, the realm is different in her series~ although a Chrestomanci was always mentioned but the appearance was just minimal~ the story really evolved in the young magicians...When I read the Magicians of Caprona, I started became wary of cats~ its when the magic was auspicious, with the presence of cats (see how it affected my thoughts?) lol. And generally, Chrestomanci has 9 lives, so makes me think of cats too. Then here comes Cat Chant~ his fiddle-cat, and the goddess with lots of cats~
I liked her Howl's Moving Castle too~ I can't even believe that she was the one who wrote it when I have watched the film first, directed by Hayao Miyazaki then later found out that it was from Diana's book. Amazing writer~
same with me. howls moving castle was my favorite manga movie (i liked the fire!), and when I found out that It was actually written by my favorite author, I was very surprised and happy.
:)
:)
I liked Chrestomanci's snarky responses to Gwendolyn in Charmed Life particularly. Especially in regards to him reading her letters.
I love Chrestomanci. My only regret is that Diana didn't live long enough to explore Christopher's life as a teen more. I wouldd have loved a date between him and Millie!

I love all the Chrestomanci books. :)
Yes, she was one of those authors who really should have lived for ever (and written a book a year!).My favorite Christopher book has to be THE LIVES OF CHRISTOPHER CHANT. I love the way he meets and rescues Milly, whose real name (you may have noticed) we still do not know.
You can see Christopher and Milly in action in Conrad's Fate, which takes place between Lives of Christopher Chant and the later ones.
I found the last in the series The Pinhoe Egg one of the most interesting. It's not only the longest but also gives more detail of the area around Chrestomanci Castle, and you get to renew the acquaintance not just of Christopher and Milly but also a handful of others (servants mostly) from previous books. I'm looking forward to re-reading it.
Have you noticed that all the stories tie together fairly well? There's a couple short stories that falls neatly into place after MAGICIANS OF CAPRONA, for instance.

1. The Lives of Christopher Chant: the young Christopher and Millie
2. Conrad's Fate A slightly older Christopher and Millie
3. Charmed Life Christopher's now Chrestomanci: introduces Eric (Cat) Chant
4. Magicians of Caprona We first meet Tonio
5. Witch Week This is roughly contemporary with 4 and 6
6. Mixed Magics Spread in time from 3-5. In the short story 'Stealer of Souls' we meet Tonio after the events in Witch Week and Cat re-appears
7. The Pinhoe Egg The final volume, with Chrestomanci, Millie and Cat playing leading roles
Of course, some people prefer to read the books in order of publication date, or whenever they can get a copy! (Some of the short stories appear in other collections too.)
I would love to see the Charmed Life with Tom Hiddleston playing Chrestomanci. Freddie Highmore when he was younger would have been a great Cat Chant!
