He was a pet. A shearling-coat wearing pet, who escaped from his owners. It turns out owning a monkey is not permitted, so they won't get him back.

Try using a big fan to blow the smell out your windows. Create cross ventilation.

Félix (habitseven) Smoke some weed.

message 555: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I have an attic fan that works wonders for cross ventilation.

Félix (habitseven) Or combine them.

scherzo♫ (pjreads) Surgeon's infected hands led to hospital staph outbreak

"Five heart patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center contracted staph infections after a doctor operated on them with bacteria on his hands, the hospital said this week.

The doctor, whom the hospital declined to name, had an inflammation on his hand when he implanted replacement heart valves into five patients last June.

He wore gloves, but they developed microscopic tears, the hospital said, causing the infection to pass to the patients....."

Inexcusable.

The infections caused four of the patients to need a second operation, officials said.

Presumably the hospital covered the costs of those operations in full....did not bill insurance for them....

When some people who live near the elementary school heard the shots fired by Mr. Lanza on Friday, they said they were not surprised.

“I really didn’t think anything of it,” said a resident, Ray Rinaldi. “You hear gun shots around here all the time.”

What?? Really?

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments I've never heard gunfire.

I've only heard it in rural areas, like at the edge of the woods where people are hunting.

You would think living in Chicago I would have heard it here, but I never have. My neighborhood doesn't have a lot of gun action. Luckily.

message 566: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments We're surrounded by open desert. We hear gunfire quite frequently.

message 567: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments I sometimes hear gunfire when I'm at my parent's house. Usually it's people shooting hares or foxes. I saw a hare get shot last week. The hunters only got it on the fifth shot. After each shot it just kept running (it was easy to spot in the snow) and I was rooting for it to escape, but it didn't make it.

message 568: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Shooting foxes is not ok. The rabbit is a different matter.

People buy meat at the grocery store. The animals most likely died from a boltgun to the head while being held terrified in a vise.

Yet when a hunter kills a rabbit (or a deer or any game animal) to put in his freezer, he's seen as a very bad guy.

WTF?

By whom?

message 570: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I agree that's the point. It's not a perfect scenario (hunters taking up the slack for the lack of predators) but it seems to be the best we are able to do.

Susan | 6406 comments People always want to debate or argue with me when they find out I am a vegetarian (which happens after they inquire about my food or I politely turn down some offer of food). I never comment on what people are eating unless provoked and even then I do it sparingly or jokingly. It always amazes me how aggressive they get about my diet. They always act like I might die at any second for lack of the consumption of meat.

message 573: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) But you eat, like, chicken, right?

People have tried to offer alternative meats! And vegetables cooked in fat back.

Susan | 6406 comments Hey, we are not the ones eating bluish tofu.

message 581: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments That was nice!
People do not like to hear that I am raising my son vegetarian. I want him to make his own choice about it when he is old enough but I want him to know there is alternative lifestyles. Many people exclaim that he should eat meat, that he is probably not getting enough protein. He is a healthy little boy who is active, strong and full of laughter. This, alone, tells me we are doing just fine.

Susan | 6406 comments Vegetarians, unite! We have hijacked this thread. Woot!
