I just gave up on a book club after the members picked yet another book about a middle aged woman trying to find meaning in her life. I prefer books in which there is at least a chance of a giant robot or a troll showing up. I think I'll fit in here just fine.
Actually, now that I think about it, a book about a middle aged woman trying to find meaning while also coping with giant robots and trolls would be excellent. I'd definitely read that one! Connie Willis could pull it off.

Try any of the Witches books from Discworld (I'd recommend starting with Wyrd Sisters, personally). That's at least somewhat in the same vein.

Try any of the Witche..."
Thanks Sean! But I'm way ahead of you. Granny Weatherwax is the best. But let's be honest here, she's not searching for meaning. She tells the world what it means, and it complies.

Eli Steele. Husband, father, and part time fantasy author. Fan of authors with 4 initials, and some with 3, too. Currently reading Gardens of the Moon again.
Thanks for having me!

I also lurve me some humor. I grew up in a rural area with a rural library and read the advanced humorists available in that library: H. Allen Smith, Ring Lardner, Jack Douglas and of course George Bernard Shaw, the names that are on the tongues of every modern humorista. Later I encountered Jokers Come Lately like Dave Barry and Carl Hiassen or whatever his name is, and the National Lampoon. Today I am particularly impressed by Nikki Glaser, Iliza Schlesinger and Amy Schumer. I love girls who talk dirty and make me laugh, it's like oral sex and ice cream at the same time, only completely different.
I'm the author of "The Visitor From Incel World" which is comedy SF story about a far-out academic Gender Studies feminist who travels to a parallel world full of kinky slave girls. it's your basic alternate world story, and if you don't think I play it for laughs, you haven't been paying the least bit of attention. Shame on you!

My favorites are too numerous to do them justice but: Tim Powers, Ursula K. Le Guin, Sofia Samatar, C. S. E. Cooney, Amal El-Mohtar, David Mitchell, Guy Gavriel Kay, Patricia McKillip for starters.

My name is Dhesan and I am from South Africa. I work as a medical doctor (pediatric resident) so my extracurricular reading has lagged behind for some time now. I am joining the group to hopefully find some new books that will spark my imagination and reignite the love of reading I had before I started medical school. My favorite fantasy series is the Lord of the Rings but I also enjoyed reading the Sword of Truth. Currently, I am looking for stories with morally ambiguous characters. Any suggestions are welcome :)
Welcome Dhesan.
If you like epic fantasy, I'd check out:
Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight series (3/10 books published with the 4th out next year) starting with The Way of Kings)
If you want something more dark and dense try Malazan Book of the Fallen (10 books all published) starting with Gardens of the Moon.
If you want something more in the vein of Tolkien that's complete you could do Robert Jordan's Wheel of time (14 books, all published, the final 3 written by Brandon Sanderson) starting with The Eye of the World. I will say though as much as I love this series the middle books get a bit slow and the 10th book is downright glacial.
There are plenty of other shorter series to check out as well.

That's my favorite of the 3, even though it won't be complete for awhile. Really looking forward to the 4th book next year.
I hope you enjoy it!

Joe Abercrombie writes great morally ambiguous characters in his "First Law World" series. Staring with The Blade Itself

New to Goodreads and huge SciFi fan from way back. Just wanted to introduce myself... well, because I was instructed to do so... LOL
I now feel like I am being assimilated (Shameless BORG reference and showing my age:)
I also was about to post in the Lost In Space discussion thread because I’ve been binging season 2 and am quite nostalgic about the series. Yes I’m that old that I remember the original!
Cheers to all and I look forward to reading your posts, and subscribing to the podcast so I can get my geek on!
Steven
Welcome Steve

There are few of us on here who are old enough to have watched Lost in Space, Star Trek, Doctor Who etc in their original run.
Though, I was a little young to have enjoyed their 1st seasons though ;-) Being 3, 1 & 4 respectively :-)

My name is Amanda, 30 years old and from the Netherlands. I love reading fantasy books and thrillers. I don't like everything in the fantasy genre which is normal I suppose. I usually read books in Dutch but I've recently started reading in English too. I just finished Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard in English and I'm currently reading a book by Camilla Lackberg in Dutch. I'm also an aspiring writer but for the moment I'm focusing on reading and writing reviews.

I read mostly science fiction, but occasionally plow through something like Game of Thrones, etc. I've almost devoured everything Michael Crichton wrote and am always on the lookout for similar more reality/contemporary sci-fi/adventure novelists.
I shamelessly read novels at my own slow pace and don't care if a novel is brand new or a century old. If I haven't read it it's new to me.

I read a lot of Fantasy and SciFi. Some of my favorie Authors: Brandon Sanderson, Elizabeth Moon, John Scalzi, Richelle Mead,Patricia Briggs
Loved fantasy since I read the Belgariad. Have read Dune 5 times. Read the unabridged The Stand 3 times.

I'm a lifelong fan of SFF Fiction, especially Fantasy. There are so many series and books that I love. Too many to list really. Books of Babel. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. The Night Circus. Malazan Book of the Fallen. Strange The Dreamer. Sandman. Wizard Knight. Kushiel's Dart. October Daye. Books of the Raksura. The Memoranda Trilogy. (Could go on.)
I'm a sucker for unique worlds and poetic descriptions.
I work in a library and I review books and RPGs on Fantasy Faction. So I always have too many books on hand. But I can never resist the urge to find more.
I've been listening to The Sword and Laser for a couple of years now. Got into it through Vaginal Fantasy.
Great to, virtually, meet you all.

This year I decided I would participate more so in January I read "The Company Of Others" and was excited to read my first ever Sword and Laser book at the same time as this community was reading about it. Then I didn't talk to ANYONE about it XD.
I just voted for the first time in the March Madness poll so that's some engagement. Baby steps I guess.

I’m happy to be here and excited to meet you all! Feel free to friend or message me, if you’d like.

I'm Donna White. I love adventure, fantasy, and paranormal books. The authors who have inspired me are Robert Howard who wrote the Conan series. Seth Grahame-Smith of the highly entertaining Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies. And, J.R.R. Tolkien of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
Happy Reading
Donna

I've been reading since childhood, sometimes more and sometimes less. Lately I've noticed that my reading skews toward SF, more often than not written by male, English-speaking authors (favourites including Douglas Adams, Ray Bradbury and John Scalzi), and this is a pattern I'm keen to break - for all the wonderful things it has led me to, there are probably more things still out there that I've missed. I've been listening to back episodes of the show for the last few days, and my reading list has already started to grow, so let's hope that continues.

Welcome David. I know a few of our members in your area like both Capclave and Awesomecon. Personally I've always been a fan of Otakon, though that's not very literary.
