The Sword and Laser discussion
Introduction and welcome thread!

I've been reading sword/laser books since I was a kid, though I also branch out into mystery and romance (I am finally mature enough to admit to reading romance now).
My favorite authors are Lois McMaster Bujold and Sharon Lee/Steve Miller.

I listen\read to all my books via Audible, which are, on the whole, awesome.

I have been listening to the podcast and lurking in the forums for a few months now, so I figured it was time to introduce myself. I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy almost equally but prefer sci-fi a little more. I have enjoyed all of the books I have found through Sword & Laser so far and look forward to reading more good books.

I'm an avid fantasy/sci-fi reader, and I'm always looking for something new to read. I'm from Chattanooga, TN, and found The Sword and Laser on the Frogpants mega-feed.
I'm currently reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and loving it so far.

Currently reading Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson, having discovered Brandon's works when he was chosen to follow in Robert Jordan's footsteps in the completion of RJs "The Wheel of Time" series. Now in possesion of Brandon's complete works (as published in the UK ...)
On the Sci-Fi side, i am a fan of epic space opera series such as Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trillogy, and anything by Iian M. Banks. Also a fan of anything Cyberpunk etc...
Throw in a little H.P. Lovecraft for contrast, and we're all good to go :-)
Edit:
Oh and i have just written my first ever goodreads book review on The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III, here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
He is an aspiring indie author, and i enjoyed his book on kindle when i randomly came accross it one day via twitter. Happy to do my little bit to give the guy and his book a little extra exposure where possible :-)

I'm new to Good Reads and just recently started listening to the Sword and Laser podcasts, hoping to find some good recommendations. My sci-fi and fantasy background includes the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Dirk Gently by Douglas Adams, the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, the Myth Adventures by Robert Asprin. I'm also a long time fan of Doctor Who, Star Wars, Red Dwarf and Space Quest.
I'm also an aspiring speculative fiction writer and avid sleeper.

I ignorantly turned my nose up at fantasy back then, thinking it was just a cheesy pile of princesses and unicorns, until I read The Lord of the Rings in my mid teens. Again, a life Changing event. Now I probably read more fantasy than anything, unicorns and all.
I was just recently turned on to the sword and laser podcast and I'm excited to start reading along with y'all. Especially since I tend to read a lot of classics and have a harder time picking out current sci-fi and fantasy. There's just so much out there, and a lot of it isn't so great. Some books I love are: Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series, Ursula K. Leguin's The Lathe of Heaven and her Earthsea Trilogy, Kurt Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan, Stephen King's Dark Tower series, and Alan More's The Watchmen. I am currently reading A Feast for Crows and thoroughly enjoying the series.
Well, that's it. Happy to be here!

I've been into reading for as long as I can remember, mostly thanks to my mother who believed reading to be the best sort of hobby anyone could cultivate. My list of favorite authors tends to shift a lot depending on my mood, but the two constants on that list definitely have to be J.R.R. Tolkien for the Sword side of things, and Frank Herbert for the Laser side.
I've just finished reading Iain M. Banks's The Player of Games, which is part of what is turning out to be a pretty good series, and I'm currently reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. After I finish reading The Prague Cemetery (Umberto Eco), I might look through the selections on this group and give them a shot :)

In my spare time I'm a gamer, martial artist, and amateur stargazer.
I find it difficult to keep up with all the new authors and hope that this group will provide lots of suggestions for new and exciting adventures to read.

I’m Cian (key-in) and I'm a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan. I have been listening to the podcast for a while (strayed over it was mentioned on TNT) and said I’d finally actually join :). I’m originally from Ireland but went to university in Cambridge, UK and currently live in NZ (aka Middle-earth).
My favorite fantasy authors are Pratchett, Martin, Gaiman, Adams, and of course Tolkien but I’ll basically read anything. Just finished 'The lies of Locke Lamora' and loved it. I'm currently reading Dracula, because it's heading into winter time here and to keep my quota of Irish authors in check :)

I am a recovering World of Warcraft addict. Science Fiction is my favorite genre but I also read some Horror and Fantasy. I've been listening to Sword and Laser for a few months now and have already discovered some new favorite books and authors.

I've been a huge fantasy and sci-fi fan since childhood, and a long time listener (and lurker).

I found my way here after Veronica mentioned Sword and Laser during one of the Vaginal Fantasy Hangouts. Fantasy is definitely my favourite genre but I really want to start reading more Sci-Fi, so this group seems perfect!

The quickest I've read a book was The Game Of Thrones in 2 days.
Also like non-fiction war books.

I am Clarissa and I found out about Sword and Laser (and The SOIAF series) last June through my husband, who is a fellow geek. He is a fan of Tekzilla, heard Veronica mention the podcast/books, and knows I enjoy reading fantasy and scifi.
I have read fantasy/Sci-fi since I was a kid. I was one who read the Dune series before fully understanding it (am in the middle of rereading it now) and read many of Anne McCaffrey books in high school. Thanks for the great Podcast!

I've been reading sci-fi and fantasy since my mom handed me a well worn copy of the Hobbit with the cover barely held on with a rubber band. I came here from following Veronica on twitter.

I'm a huge fantasy book geek. I love sic-fi, too, but usually get my fix for that from tv or movies. I'm excited to start reading sic-fi as well. I'm a fan of the Dark is Rising series as well as the D&D novels, especially Dragonlance. The Lies of Locke Lamora was my first Sword and Laser book. I liked it so much, I finished in a week and have now moved on to the next book in the series. Looking forward to more great picks.

I'm a cartoonist with lots of time to listen to books while I draw. I've listened to the podcast for several months now and decided that it was finally time to sign up with GoodReads and take part in the discussion.
The Martian Chronicles stole my heart at a young age, and I've been hooked since then. I really enjoyed the Song of Ice and Fire books as well as most everything by Neal Stephenson.
Glad to be here!

I just started listening to the podcast and I'm really enjoying it, you guys are brilliant. I'm really looking forward to joining in on the forums, the discussions seem intelligent and its great to find such a nice community. I mostly read fantasy but enjoy sci-fi too, my favourite fantasy book is The Name of the Wind and my favourite sci-fi would have to be Ender's Game.

I found Sword and Laser through Books on the Nightstand podcast. I prefer sci-fi but I read fantasy as well. Funnily enough, my favorite books are exactly the same as Ewan's - Ender's Game (or The Left Hand of Darkness) and The Name of the Wind.

I read every sort of thing but my first love was sci-fi. And horror. I was terrible with reading in school. But I loved E.A.Poe and labored through with a dictionary. I love the handy dictionary in my Kindle, since (50 yrs later) I maintain the habit of looking up any word I don't know.

I found Sword and Laser last year after I had been reading Patrick Rothfuss's blog and he had mentioned that he was on the podcast. I like to read sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and graphic novels. I am currently reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson and am a fan of Patrick Rothfuss as well.

I've always been a SF&F fan but recently, thanks to groups like this, I have realized how large the genres actually are. Feeling a bit overwhelmed, but eager to broaden my library.

65 years old and reading SF for at least 50 years. Why didn't the internet exist when I was a kid.
Currently reading (mostly seriously):
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
The Deed of Pasksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon
The Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian (yes, I know it's not SF)

I read all the time, and love SF & fantasy. Just started listening to the podcast and thought I'd join the group as well.

I'm Luke, have been all my life, all 25 years of it.
I love epic high fantasy, unfortunately I haven't read much SF but I do intend to remedy that shortly. I just need to find where to start.

My favorite Genre's are sci-fi, horror, and fantasy.
I don't have a favorite author but some of my favorite books I've read, from each genre, are:
Orson Scott Card's Ender's Shadow,
Neal Stephonson's Snow Crash,
Herbert's Dune,
and Jame Blish's Black easter.
What I'd like to get most of this group is broaden my reading list and recieve enligtenment from other readers perspectives on different books. Hopefully, I will help in doing the same for others.

I started reading science fiction in college after buying some books used at a fun raiser for the local high school. I'm an on again off again science fiction and fantasy reader who needs more time to read. I've read through some of the older(classic) authors and now need some new names to read. Enjoyed the Windup Girl and Saturn's Children. Loved The Lies of Lock Lamora and Red Skies under Red Sea's. I don't remember how I found the podcast. I just stumbled upon the website and listened to a few shows before subscribing.

anticipation of the upcoming movie.after that Ithink I'm jumping into the dresden files series.

It can be hard to pick favorites because I'm a bookaholic, but many of the books that I love to reread are SF and Fantasy - Lord of the Rings, Dune, Lord of Light, the Weirdstone of Brisingamen, a Wizard of Earthsea and (less old school) Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.
Recently I really enjoyed books by Pierre Pevel (the Three Musketeers, with magic!), the first two of the Empire in Black and Gold series, and the Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry. I'm currently reading through the Honor Harrington novels.

I enjoy most forms of fiction and reading in general. Sci-fi and Fantasy seem to be read the most however. I think reading makes a person more interesting. It expands who they are and how they think.
Anyway.... love the podcast! Keep up the good work!

My names Aroha and i have been reading as much as i can get my hands on since i cant remember when. I have recently been introduced to the Frogpants Podcasts and found out about sword and laser through them and this has lead me to Good Reads.
I couldnt list a favourite novel or i would be here for hours telling you all the great books i have read over the years. I love historical fiction and cant get enough of Fantasy... Ive never really got into a lot of Sci-Fi but have read a few here and there that i have really enjoyed. If anyone has any recommendations for a beginner who dosent know alot about the genre i would love some feedback...

have come back to Sci-Fi and Fantasy after a few years of exprimentation with other genres. I started out with all the classics way back when - Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, Nueromancer, Mote in Gods Eye etc - and really have the discovery of the S&L Podcast to thank for introducing me to the new breed of authors like Patrick Ruthfuss, Neal Stephenson, Peter F Hamilton and company ...
All I've got to say is ... Tom and Veronica, Love your work!
Cheers from Oz ...

I'm interested in meeting other readers on this forum and trading ideas about great books. If you're interested in learning more about what I write, you can visit chrisvera.com

I've recently finished a complete purge of paper books and magazines from my life and I'm not getting anything, except rarities/collectibles, now unless it's digital. I'm hoping this group will help replace the cool conversations, comments, and suggestions about books that I used to get among the shelves at the real world bookstore.

My name is Louann & I'm a new member here. I'm excited about this group because sci fi & fantasy are probably my two favorite genres (in books & movies!).
I found this group through Veronica by way of the Vaginal Fantasy group. ;)

My name is Megan and I'm pleased to meet you all. I've been listening for a few months and have read the last few selections so I thought I had better make it official and join in. I will gladly read just about anything with words but I especially love fantasy and sci-fi.
Hooray for books!
PS: I think you can say you have "read" a book if you listened to the audiobook and I am drinking a 2009 Erath Pinot Noir (it's delightful). So there's that.

I heard Veronica mention this group on the Vaginal Fantasy feed that Felicia Day posted via G+ and thought it was spiffing, so here I am. I've always loved reading and fantasy's been the bomb since I first cracked The Hobbit. I'm not much experienced in the sci-fi genre, but I loved Ender's Game and am on the prowl for more great titles.
