Bob | 3 comments Hi. My name is Bob Daugherty and I am a Junior High and High School Social Studies teacher in Bradford, Oh. I read history to be a better teacher(and I also like it) and read sci-fi/fantasy to relax. I have a wife who loves to read and two children.

message 853: by Adam (new)

Adam Christopher (adamchristopher) Hello!

My name is Adam Christopher, and I'm the author of Empire State. I'm a newcomer to Sword and Laser, although from what I've heard so far this looks like exactly the kind of podcast I've been looking for - a couple of other book and writing podcasts I used to regularly listen to have sadly vanished.

Also just wanted to say a quick thanks for the mention in the latest episode!

message 854: by Casey (new)

Casey (goochie) Hi all, my name is Casey!

I discovered Sword and Laser about a year ago, digging around for some book podcasts for suggestions on new stuff to read.

I've always been a huge fan of science fiction, fantasy and horror, so I'm pretty sure the S&L community's the place for me! I've been lurking around her for a bit, but decided to dive in.

I've been a podcaster some time with the Bloody Good Horror Podcast (http://www.bloodygoodhorror.com/bgh/p...) and the 1951 Down Place Podcast. After listening to Tom and Veronica for the last year, they inspired me to start my own podcast called the 'Dad and his Weird Friends Book Podcast' which is now put out by Bloody Good Horror!

message 855: by Bear (new)

Bear | 2 comments Hi! I'm Bear, and I love to read nearly everything that I can get my hands on. My favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, Diana Gabaldon, Alan Dean Foster, Bernard Cornwell, Frank Herbert, Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Ursula LeGuin, Kevin J. Anderson, George R.R. Martin, and a host of others. Mostly, I enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy, but also read from most every genre out there. Love the podcast, and think you guys are doing a fantastic job! Thank you!! :-)

message 856: by Chris (new)

Chris Longstreet (chris_longstreet) Hi, I'm Chris

I've been following S&L since the beginning, coming in through following all the Revision 3 podcasts and Mahalo daily. I'm a Tolkien and fantasy reading/RPG fanatic, along with music and PC/console gaming. If I'm not reading a book, I'm listening one in the car driving into lovely downtown Cleveland, Ohio or listening on my iPod on the trails while getting in a run.

I'm just now getting on the forums, but I appreciate all the time, efforts, entertainment, and recommendations that Sword and Laser provides. What a wonderful community!

message 857: by Allen (new)

Allen Stucker | 3 comments Hello everyone I'm Allen. I'm a big science fiction and fantasy fan. I also enjoy board games, video games, and comics. I'm importing my library from MyLibrary.

message 858: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) Hi all Mark here, writer/reader. Enjoying Myke Cole's Control Point right now, just finished Teresea Frohock's Miserere, also good. I've been known to mix science and fantasy so sword&laser sounds good to me.

message 859: by Craig (new)

Craig | 1 comments Hi Craig here - yes another one it seems....

Just started listening to Sword and Laser a few weeks ago, and I can't believe that the first book to read is set in my hometown of Edinburgh - with the first scenes minutes from where I grew up. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the feedback from everyone on this book.

message 860: by Gregory (new)

Gregory | 11 comments Hello I'm Gregory Thomas i just started listening and i love it (even though i don't get audio books which yall seem to love)

message 861: by Marshall (new)

Marshall Thompson | 9 comments Hi everyone. I'm Marshall. I was an obsessive reader in high school (you had to pry me out of a book) but started to give it up as I got older. As a New Year's resolution I decided I'd read more and since I've been a fan of Tom and Veronica for a while I decided Sword & Laser was the perfect way to do it. I used to read mainly action/adventure (a lot of Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler) but have gotten more into sci-fi/fantasy as I've gotten older. Cant' wait to take part in this community and hope to be a part of it for a long time.

message 862: by Bjørn (new)

Bjørn | 2 comments Hello everybody. I am Bjørn from the cold and snowy country of Norway. I've been listening to the podcast for a while now, but never contributed to the goodreads discussion. Mostly because there are too many clever people posting clever things :D

I realy like the show and it helps me find new and interesting books to "read" (listen to) and it helps me widen my sci-fi/fantasy horizon

message 863: by Jade (last edited Jan 09, 2012 01:28PM) (new)

Jade (theriaultj) Hello, my name is Jordan. I learned of the S&L Podcast from Kristian Nairn's twitter/facebook back when the pair interviewed him and have been a listener since then. I finally joined Goodreads at the insistence of several of my classmates who are all avid readers. I'm taking Information Management and Library Technology right now to be a Library Technician (or Assistant if you so wish) and of course everyone wants to geek out and compare how big their book collection is and what they've read, etc.

I hope to have some fun here, maybe even frolic around in some of the discussion threads and possibly even pick up one of the books and read it along with everyone! It's very difficult to remember all the books you've read though when you want to add everything to Goodreads when first joining....

message 864: by Adam (new)

Adam | 1 comments Hi I'm Adam from Australia.
I've always read Biographies but my love of reading is often sidelined for Movies and Video Games.
2012 is the year I get back into reading and the podcast really helps keep up the Enthusiasm!
Looking forward to expanding my Library both Digitral and Physical!

message 865: by Kevin (last edited Jan 09, 2012 03:48PM) (new)

Kevin | 1 comments Hi, I'm Kevin

Been listening for a couple months now and first time posting. Learned about this through Tekzilla.
Really like sic-fi and fantasy for a while now.

message 866: by Søren (last edited Jan 09, 2012 05:43PM) (new)

Søren Mondrup Hey sff people.
New guy in the group, joined some time ago and didn't get around to posting till now.
21 year old guy from Denmark of all places, love the more gritty fantasy which seems to be a trend at the moment. Favorite authors at the moment would be Abercrombie and Martin (Yeah yeah I know, traditional).
Really looking forward to reading and sharing some good books with all of you.

Søren

message 867: by John (new)

John Schwartz | 6 comments Hello, my name is John and I enjoy many types of genders, but really enjoy acidity and fantasy books. Love the podcast.

message 868: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 3 comments Just recently found the podcast, was jazzed and started listening, then you mentioned the Sentry Box, the place I spent much of my gaming, dorky youth, and you made me a full out believer. I love soccer, cut-offs, my kids, and Sci-Fi makes my world go round. I am Brad, by the way.

message 869: by Lanfear (new)

Lanfear | 2 comments Hi, I'm Laura. Long time lurker and finally thought I would join the party. I'm a huge fantasy/ Scifi fan with my current obsessions being Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson.

message 870: by Michael (new)

Michael Brown (molex) | 20 comments Hi, my name is Mike and I am a long time Sci-Fi/Fantasy geek. I got into Sci-Fi from watching Star Wars as a kid and fantasy from an old Atari game called Adventure. I have been gaming and reading ever since.
I look forward to getting to know everyone and being exposed to some authors I would not have read otherwise.

message 871: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Riggins (crriggins) | 2 comments My name is Chris and I prefer swords over lasers but, like many, I dream of laser swords. I grew up on David Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean and move from there to Donaldson's Convenant series, Jordan's Wheel of Time, Goodkind's Sword of Truth and George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. I've tried to mix in some Lasers here and there with the whole Star Wars Extended Universe, lots of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov.

I love the podcast and am always up for giving and receiving book recommendations. In a rut now trying to figure out where to put my focus now so rather than making a decision I just sit and stare at my "to read" queue and book shelf.

message 872: by Jessica (last edited Jan 11, 2012 10:17PM) (new)

Jessica Duffy | 25 comments Hi I'm Jessica.

I just joined the discussion group though I've been listening to the podcast for a while. This is going to be the first time I actually read a book along with the group though so heres to hoping I enjoy it.

I started reading sci-fi back when I was 11. The first was a Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Verne.

My dad bought me several classic novels when I was 11 and Journey was the only one to really catch my interest and science fiction and fantasy has since claimed my soul.

Glad I found this group and heres to hoping I love Rule 34.

message 873: by Napoez3 (new)

Napoez3 | 158 comments Hi! I'm Napo... and it's hellish hard to do an introduction... so I'll try to be brief: I like Sci-fi and fantasy, but I also enjoy terror, thriller and some times detective stories. Now I'm reading "The lost Gate" by Orson Scott Card, you might now him, when I finish this one, I want to buy a Kindle (or some other eReader).

That's it!

PS: I'm not a native English speaker, so don't be harsh with me If I make some grammar errors D:

message 874: by Keith (new)

Keith L (k-lem) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Keith. (No relation to Veronica, though I do live near a Belmont Rd.)

Hugely enjoying all the new books and authors the podcast has been introducing me to in the 6 months I've been listening to it. Hope to get synced up and read one of the picks along with the podcast eventually. So many to catch up on!

message 875: by Mike (new)

Mike | 3 comments Hi! I'm Mike and my favorite authors are Orson Scott Card, Stephen King, Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Dean Koontz, and David Weber.

message 876: by James (new)

James Jackson (JAJackson) G'day Mates, I am also new to Goodreads. What a great find. !!!! Though I am an 'Aussie', I now live in Michigan USA, and have done so for ten years. I look forward to being an active member on the goodreads forums and am encouraging my 'reader' friends to join us. :)
James Jackson

message 877: by Elianara (new)

Elianara | 23 comments Hello!

I'm Elianara, and I'm from Finland. I have been listening to the podcast for a couple of months now, and finally decided to join the goodreads forum. I like both sword and laser, but I'm more into the fantasy side of things. Among my favorite authors are Elizabeth Moon, Patricia Briggs and JD Robb.

Currently reading: book, don't know, just read Raven's Strike by Patricia Briggs, haven't chosen my next book from that enormous TBR pile I have.

In audio format I have Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie

message 878: by Orvelin (new)

Orvelin Roman (toxoplam) | 6 comments Hello I'm Orvelin. I'm a veterinarian, gamer and geeky dad.

I started listening S&L since November last year so I'm a little behind catching up with the most recent books. I've been a fan of Veronica Belmont since the first episode of Qore and then I heard of S&L through another podcast. I've always been reading sci-fi and fantasy books for a while and when I heard about this group I decided to give it a try.

message 879: by Mark (new)

Mark (mndrew) | 31 comments Greetings, I'm Mark.
I've been lurking here since I was made aware of the group via the Nerdist™ podcast with Veronica and have finally caught up on the backlog of S&L podcasts. Having received a shiny new Kindle Fire for the holiday and added the Audible app, I now have hopes of eventually catching up on my reading backlog.
I enjoy SF from David Weber all the way back to E. E. Smith; and Fantasy from urban to epic.

message 880: by James (new)

James Jackson (JAJackson) Hey Chris, I too enjoy Isaac Asimov, and also Arthur C Clark, with a mix of Robert Heinlein. They were 'cronies' back in the day, probably why I like all of their styles. :)

message 881: by Marc (new)

Marc S (dicegeek) Hi everybody, I am Marc, and I am a bookaholic. I've been listening to S&L for a while, but was always in the middle of other books during kick-off's. Until now, that is. I just finished my last book when I saw that the next kickoff was something I actually had on my shelf. Looking forward to hanging out here more, and too all the S&L goodness to come.

message 882: by Mark (new)

Mark Nuhfer | 32 comments Hey there. I'm Mark. I've been enjoying the podcast, thought I'd check out the Group. I like to read SF on my ipod touch. If forced to pick one favorite author I'd probably say Gene Wolfe, with Ursula LeGuin a close second. But I read and enjoy many many different authors and am always looking for good recommendations.

Just found the podcast so am check out the forum

message 884: by Darren (new)

Darren | 3 comments Hi All,

My name is Darren and have been listening to the podcast for a few episodes now. I'm an avid listener to Tech News Today and finally had to check out the S&L podcast after hearing Tom's references. I listened to my first podcast midway through Elantris and heard a great discussion about religion within the book. This one episode caused me to purchase the book and I'm extremely glad that I did! I recently finished it and throughly enjoyed the book. I'm looking forward to all future books and discussions!

message 885: by David (new)

David | 1 comments Hey All! I'm David, been listening to the podcast for a couple of months now and just now decided to get around to joining this group.

I am from Oklahoma, a senior in high school, about to graduate, and i am going to be playing football in college. I love reading, games, and heard about the sword and laser from the Scott Johnson on his many podcasts. I am currently reading a game of thrones, the hunger games trilogy, and world war z. I am looking forward to being a part of this book club!

message 888: by George (new)

George (georgefromny) | 70 comments Huzzah, fellow... Laserians?

I was going to post something about sci-fi, fantasy, genre fiction fandom and what books I like but so much instantly came to mind that all I got was a migraine.

So off to a cool, dark room for me.

And.... Hello.

message 889: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Greer | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Lawrence. I started out reading sci-fi books by Frank Herbert and Robert Heinlein in high school. I've gradually drifted over to fantasy. I've been listening to Tom and Veronica since they were CNET's Buzz Out Loud podcast.

Christopher Galasso | 2 comments Hi, I'm Chris. Just starting to expand my reading circle by picking up Ready Player One, which lead me here.

message 891: by Greg (new)

Greg (rolandrge) Hi, I'm Greg.

Really into sci-fi/fantasy books and games. Some of my favorite games are Elder Scrolls and the KOTOR series. My favorite authors include Stephen King, JK Rowling, JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin, Douglas Adams, etc. Been trying to get into writing more lately, currently working on two stories/books.

Glad to find a group thats right in my wheelhouse!

message 892: by Phil (new)

Phil (phil_rozelle_oz) | 34 comments Hi, my name's Phil and I live in Rozelle, a suburb of Sydney Australia. I'm in the IT business and discovered S&L after hearing Veronica and Tom talking about it on TWIT.

I've been reading SF&F for more than 40 years. Early favourites were the Lensman and Skylark series by E.E 'Doc' Smith and of course the YA fiction of Heinlein, but also CS Lewis, Edward Norton, Andre Norton (no relation), Edgar Eager, Tolkien of course, and so many others.

I've been reading ebooks for a few years now, mostly from purchasing the output of Baen Books through Webscriptions, which has been a great innovation (recently recast as http://www.baenebooks.com/ under the heading Monthly Book Bundles, which I think is lacking imagination as a brand).

My favourite authors from them have been David Weber, David Drake, Wen Spencer.... In fact too many to list.

Anyway, looking forward to sharing and interacting with everyone here.

All the best,

Phil

message 893: by Angus (new)

Angus Macdonald (angum) | 3 comments Hello my name is Angus, and I like to read books.

My favourite books are ones with dirty words and rude things in them. It started when I read the Machine Gunners in primary school. I also read the Hobbit back then, but I can't really remember it, and the Spanish Letters too, neither of them very sweary.

Nowadays I read fantasy books on my kindles, and share anything that sounds remotely rude/prejudiced/homoerotic with all my friends on Facebook. Nobody pays any attention. Sometimes my mum gives me a row.

My recents favourite reads have come from Jabercrombie, GRR Martin, Daniel Suarez, and Puzo.

Looking forward to being everybody's new best friend.

Angus

message 894: by Emily (new)

Emily Hello, I'm Emily! :)
I live in the sunny California!

I play the violin, piano, and the drum set. I enjoy all types of music.

I love the murder/thriller novels the best. I look forward to being a part of this group!

message 895: by Dennis (new)

Dennis (haleowl) | 7 comments I'm Dennis, from the UK. Have been listening to Sword & Laser from the beginning but never got round to joining the forum until now.

Currently re-reading some classic Frank Herbert, The Dosadi Experiment. Some of Herbert's non-Dune books stand the test of time and are seriously underrated. If Veronica and Tom are ever tempted to do a classic sci-fi book as a book pick, The Dosadi Experiment would enlighten more than a few readers, is a fast-moving gripping story and it isn't even that long a book.

message 896: by Corey (new)

Corey (gothamghost) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Corey.

I have been listening to S&L for a little over a year now I guess but just decided to bite the bullet and join Goodreads.

My favorite book is 1984. My favorite authors are Patrick Rothfuss, George RR Martin, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov and Robin Hobb.

I also love video games and camping/hiking. I am looking forward to being a part of the group.

message 897: by Richtea (new)

Richtea | 5 comments Hello, I'm Richard
I've just started listening and am enjoying it muchly (if that's a word).
At the moment, I'm working my way through all the Terry Pratchett Discworld books again(I'm up to Feet of Clay so far). I've read them all before, but I just thought it would be to go through them again.
Other than that I read loads of fantasy, not so much of a Science Fiction read, and like a good victorian/steampunk romp...and anything that catches my imagination.

message 898: by Samus5678 (new)

Samus5678 | 17 comments Hi, I'm Bobby

I first listened to the podcast when I heard it plugged in on TWIT. I listened to the podcast joined at the start of rule 34.

message 899: by Gareth (new)

Gareth (garethpitman) Hi, I'm Gareth.
I'm both a newbie on Goodreads and S&L, so go easy!
Favourite authors include Tolkien and now George R R Martin, and Douglas Coupland, Michael Crichton and Douglas Adams.
Looking forward to the debate and recommendations.
