colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Who were your favorite characters? Least favorite? Why?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I think my favorite character was Curdle. :>

One of the things about the characters in this, I felt, is that after they became a group they were sort of shunted into the background until they were needed, and often it felt like a lot of lines, especially the expository ones, could've been anyone talking. Like, when they were first introduced they were these colorful characters - but then, as the plot took off, they were just so much extranea. (No, that's not a real word. Yes, I'm sticking with it.)

In short, I suppose that none of the characters really felt fully fleshed out for me, not even Deeba - who I liked in the beginning, and then was sort of meh about. Though I did generally like Hemi.

I liked Brokkenbroll at first, though the part where he revealed he was a bad guy was forseeable. I thought it was such a shame that he became such a wimpy villain at the end.

Oh, the Binja were kinda cool.

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I really liked Curdle too. I never thought I would find a milk carton cute lol. I liked Obaday too. It disappointed me to find out out Brokkenbroll turned out to be a bad guy because I think he was one of my favorites, and I agree I think after that he just fell flat. I thought the characters were fleshed out ok myself. They all had distinctive personalities to me at least.

Book (bloodwitch) I probably liked Curdle, Hemi, Obaday, and Jones the best. Otherwise, the rest of the characters were pretty flat or just not engaging enough.

Mawgojzeta I think everyone likes Curdle. I really liked Hemi.

Dawn (breakofdawn) I liked Hemi a lot, and also Diss. I'm not sure why I liked diss.. Maybe just the illustration of him from the book? He looked so cuddly! I was sad when he was offed, and kept hoping he would come back, but he never did. Another favorite for some reason was Skool. I always felt bad for him (her?), he never got to join in on any of the adventure because he was either too heavy or too slow.

Jesi (pwnedkitten) Hemi, definitely. I think he was probably the only character that was a bit fleshed out.

Bit ironic, that, no? :>

**laughs** Indeed!

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments I agree on Brokkenbroll. I thought he made a grand entrance and he immediately became my favorite. Right away I pictured Johnny Depp playing the part and that never left my mind. But y'all are right. He fell so flat as a villain at the end that I was disappointed. It was almost as bad as watching Boba Fett fall into the sand monster's mouth.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Johnny Depp. Yum.

Do you know who I sort of think of, though? Christopher Walken. Don't know why.

Dawn (breakofdawn) I like Johnny Depp better for the part, I can totally see that! And that one chick who's always in movies with him... Helena Bonham Carter (had to google it). She could be Lecturn (I think that's the name, I don't have the book in front of me). The female Propheseer.

And as an aside... I had no idea Lecturn (if that is the name) was a woman for a really long time. I don't know how I missed it, but I didn't notice it until the very end.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I love Helena Bonham Carter, and Lecturn sucked - so, no, I don't agree with that casting. :p

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Walken would work, though it wouldn't be as surprising when he turned villain.

HBC would have to be in it if Tim Burton directed (as I requested in my review). Lecturn was too boring to me for her though. She'd be great as "the book", though she'd only be a voice then.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Ooh - she would be cool as the Book, I agree. If you did the book like in Ella Enchanted, her face could be in it, too. :D

Dawn (breakofdawn) Oh that's a better one, I only said Lecturn because I couldn't think of any other older female characters.

Carmen | 50 comments I agree with Colleen's first entrance. For me the characters were flat, mere excuses to move the plot. And the plot itself an excuse to show Un Lun Dun, the imaginary world.

Un Lun Dun was certainly different. But a different world, no matter how fantastic, is not enough to make me care.
