Matt realized he had forgotten his pencil. He raised his hand again to ask if he could go get one from his locker.
She held one out, the eraser to him, the perfectly sharpened lead towards herself. "You're welcome."
Matt payed attention as Mr. Keith went over his policies and class rules.

Matt noticed the girl who had given him a pencil writing something in a notebook. He wondered what she was writing about.
The words had minds of their own and began to shape themselves into a poetic version of her thoughts. She paused and then added a third stanza.
Sawyer didn't answer him, writing on as if she hadn't heard the question at all. The words needed to be written.
She lifted her head to glare at him through her bangs, which ended up defeating the point since she was sure her icy silver-blue eyes were hidden sufficiently behind her midnight hair. "What?"
"Oh....well..." she retreated into quiet-mode, turning the note book so he could read it if he felt like it.
Here I stand,
alone and weary.
The clouded skies
are none but dreary.
I beg and plead.
the sun to come.
The world has
sadly darkened some.
It seems the night
will never end.
A goodbye kiss,
last hug for a friend.
The end is near,
its fangs are bared.
And here I stand,
alone and scared.

Matt scanned the poem quickly, a compliment on the tip of his tongue. But he had to go back and read it again when he read the last sentence.
Sawyer shifted uncomfotably, wondering what on earth had compelled her to let him see such a personal thing.

Esmeralda rushed into the classroom late, cursing under her breath. She was hoping on sliding into a seat at the back before the teacher noticed her, but most seats seemed to be taken, and she stood awkwardly at the back of the class.

"What do you mean?" she asked warily.

Matt clasped his hands together to keep from moving them erractically. "It just sounds sort of like you're depressed or something."

((unfortunately, I'm only checking in every couple minutes 'cause I'm helping my mom.))
When she did look at him again her eyes were curious. "Why?"

((I have to leave in 5 minutes for P.E. I get to run a mile. JOY! *gags*))
"Because you're sad," Matt said. "And being sad is... bad," he stumbled over his words. "I don't like it when people are sad. It makes me feel... bad." He felt like an idiot.

((oh joy.))
Sawyer didn't know what to say to that so she didn't say anything, just doodled in her notebook. "Class is starting," she said after a minute.

"Can I sit here?" She whispered as the teacher started the lesson.
Matt scribbled down his assignment, just as the bell rang. He stuffed his books into his oversize bag.
((yays. :D))
Sawyer picked up her things and waited for everyone to leave before standing to leave.

Matt squeezed out the door, and promptly tripped over his shoelaces, scattering papers all across the hallway. "Crumb!" he said, looking up at the clock. The second bell was about to ring.
Sawyer made a face behind her bangs and shoved her things in the messenger bag at her side before kneeling to help him gather his papers, holding them out to him with impatience and worry written on her face.
"You don't have to help me," Matt said as he frantically grabbed papers. "Three tardies equal a detention you know."
"But this is the first day of school," Matt said, incredulously as he stood up. They had 30 seconds to get to the other end of the hall.
Matt took a couple quick steps toward the door, before he realized they would never make it. "How in the world?"
