Michael (knowledgelost) I haven't seen it yet, but been meaning to.

And I don't believe it's based on a book

Neko Finished United States of Tara last night...Shame it's the final season :( Sorta rushed it. Weeds also ended last week...Possibly the last for the series but nothing is confirmed yet :/

Still working my way through Eureka and back to watching old Simpsons episodes...Then I think I'll start season 8 of Monk and finally be done with the series.

Many shows I've liked this year appear to be ending or have ended for good..urrghh. Well not Monk that ended years ago..lol

I'm in Perth, so I've still got just over an hour to go. Just wanted to know some initial feedback.

Neko Nuup...I didn't watch it...Clashes with RUSH...But will go watch it later on.

message 414: by Laura (new)

Laura Rittenhouse | 200 comments I just watched it (recorded it but it's also on iView) and I really liked it. I've read the book and I don't know if that makes it better - probably. I sort of already knew the characters and found myself saying "oh oh, I know what's going to happen to you".

I found it really well done. It followed the mood of the book perfectly. And it was nice not to actually spend so much time in Hector's head - I found that a bit confronting in the book. In the TV show you get a good impression of him without having to crawl in his skin.

I felt exactly the same about the slap in the TV show as I did in the book - I just couldn't blame Harry. Slapping a kid across the face is out of line, but Hugo was way out of line and was physical, aggressive and dangerous.

message 415: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 328 comments I really liked it, thought the casting very well done too. Looking forward to next week's.

Neko Michael wrote: "Its worth waching Laura. :)"
Yeah, I ended up watching it on iview but it was sooo pixelated x( Otherwise, it seems like a good show and pretty different as well, the mood that it's set is interesting.

Still curious about the book..hmm..might need to go and buy it..read it quickly and then wait for next weeks episode..lol

Don't think you could do that Laura...it's very thick!!! Lots of pages! 483 but deeeep!!! ;D

message 418: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The book is in 8 different perspectives, all she has to do is read the first two parts before ep2 airs and then once a week after that

I agree carmel. I have watched very litle about 9/11 over the years but this documentary was brilliant. My daughter watched it too (a miracle in itelf - not her style of TV at all) and she found it fascinating and educational. Recommend anyone whomissed it try to watch it. It was available via the internet.

Cathy | 123 comments Watched The Slap when it was repeated on Friday - I thought it translated to tv really well. The tension and reality of the situation were great really good acting. There's less of the swearing that I found off-putting in the book - its not something I'd usually even notice, but with this book it bothered me.

message 424: by Neko (new)

Erp..Forgot to watch Aussie Underbelly last night.

I agree Cathy. I was uncertain about watching the show but I also found it less confronting language wise. And I agree with you, too, Laura, about not being assailed with Hector's thought processes which I also tired of very quickly in the book.

This would be one of the rare occasions when the TV show / film is actually better than the book.

I loved this. It made me think. It was so clever to turn everything around. I think it should be shown in every school.

But much as I agree with you about this I did enjoy Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom.

Graham (giraham) | 60 comments So... Not aussie but is anyone else here as in love with Breaking Bad as I am?

BEST SHOW EVER

For those who haven't seen it, here's a quick synopsis, read it, then fill your hard drives like a spoilt child's christmas stocking with the awesomeness that is BREAKING BAD:

Walter White (The dad from Malcolm in the Middle [Bryan Cranston]) is a meek, over-qualified chemistry teacher who also works part time at a car wash for extra money. His 17 year old son has cerebral palsy and his wife is pregnant.

Walt passes out one day. Finds out he has lung cancer. Doesn't have long to live. Bills are stacking up. He doesn't tell his family about his illness, nor does he want to leave his wife with a huge amount of debt.

His brother-in-law is a DEA agent. He tells Walt about a massive bust he's just done. Walt sees a ton of money on the news.

Walt then meets up with a drug cooking ex-student and they decide to use Walt's chemistry skills [he contributed to Nobel Prize winning research] to cook crystal meth for quick cash. Bad idea? YES.

That's just a run down of the first episode from memory. The proverbial simply hits the fan after that.

Dark, funny, and the drama is tense as all hell. The entire cast is 100% awesome.

Fiona | 22 comments Graham wrote: "So... Not aussie but is anyone else here as in love with Breaking Bad as I am?"

Yes, me! Fabulous show and excellent acting from all involved but the tension can get so high that sometimes I almost can't stand it. :)

I'm loving The Slap too. It's brilliantly done.

I am also a Rush fan. It's nice to see good Australian drama done well.

Then of course there is all things Gruen, which is totally addictive.

Just saw Snowtown. Has anyone else seen it? Its such a powerful film. I felt *physically sick* for a certain ten minutes, and cant stop thinking about it. It was so horrifying because its actually real. It puts so many other horror movies to shame, because there is so little blood and gore, save one short scene. The horror is achieved through the sountrack, acting, directing and cinematography. Its a brilliant movie.

message 438: by [deleted user] (new)

Lots of great Aussie movies.

Breaker Morant.
My Brilliant Career.
Picnic at Hanging Rock.
The Getting of Wisdom.
Strictly Ballroom.
Muriel's wedding.
The Weekend.

message 440: by [deleted user] (new)

I might have to check this said movie out....horror movies have been dissapointing me lately....guess that's what you get when your brothers make you watch the exorcist at age 10 lol

message 441: by ★ Jess (last edited Dec 13, 2011 10:15PM) (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments haha Snowtown is a different type of scary than the Exorcist (age ten!?!?!?!)

If you do end up watching it, you should read this first if you are not overly familiar with the subject matter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowtown...

Watched the pilot for Warehouse 13..But I got sorta put off by one of the characters who was in an episode of Eureka..The one Fargo was with.

Thinking of trying to get back into The Wire. Just completed watching the latest season of New Tricks :)
