Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 244 comments @Kasia, does the Nook have the ability to directly deliver eBooks to it through email, the way the Kindle does?

Or both...

Steve Chaput (stevec50) I'm very happy with my nook. One of the best Christmas presents I have received, since I turned old enough to be an AARP member. :-)

Zoe Rider (zoexrider) I picked up the latest 5" Sony model, the PRS-350, last month when it came out. She's a beaut! I'd been worried that a 5" screen would feel too cramped (I was coming from an iPad, and before that a Kindle 2 with a 6" screen), but now that I've read 19 books on it, I can say with assurance that--for me--the screen is just fine.

I'm also in love with the overall size of the device--it fits perfectly in the front pocket of my small handbag (thank god, because I'm not really keen on handbags to begin with, so the smaller the better), and I can even slip it in the back pocket of my jeans if I need to. (It also fits inside a Zip-lock sandwich-sized bag, which is handy for reading in the tub.)

And it's so lightweight that the box it came in almost felt empty! 5.47 ounces!

The touch screen works really well, and I like the feel of the screen a lot (when I do swipe it), but I often find it's more convenient to use the button to turn the page when I'm reading one-handed. The buttons could stand to be more substantial. They're about an inch wide but very thin and can get a little uncomfortable against your thumb after you've been reading for an hour or three straight.

It doesn't have WiFi or 3G, but I don't have any desire to browse the web on an eInk device, and I organize all my books in Calibre, so I'm not particularly interested in being able to download a book from the web directly to the device. The one disappointment over the lack of WiFi that I did have was that I wouldn't be able to sync my place between the device and a Sony Reader app, should Sony come out with a Sony Reader app. But it turns out that the PRS-350 is so small and lightweight that I take it everywhere with me anyway, so I don't really need the ability to sync to my iPhone after all.

All that said, I bought my mom a Nook for her birthday, and I'll be getting my brother and sister-in-law a Nook for Christmas--not the Kindle because you can't check out books from the public library on a Kindle, and not the Sony because it looks a little too "cold" and techy; I wanted something friendlier/more inviting looking for them. ...but the husband and my teenaged son are probably getting Sonys. I'll decide for sure when the new Nook (as the rumor mill has it) gets announced later this month.

Zoe Rider (zoexrider) :) Nope.

Erica (bookpsycho) | 256 comments I must be the only person in the world to not have one. I feel like I would be disloyal to books. Sad, I know...

Zoe Rider (zoexrider) Aw. I can understand the sentiment.

I read a whole lot more since I got the iPad and the Sony, on the order of 12+ books a month instead of the usual 2-4 (and sometimes 6). So I don't feel real disloyal--I'm getting to around to reading far more of them I ever would have, even if they don't smell the same as the ones on the shelves.

(I didn't experiencing a spike in reading when I got the Kindle 2, although in general I liked it. Its eInk screen (a generation behind the Pearl eInk screens that the Kindle 3 and new Sonys feature) didn't have enough contrast for my reading comfort. If the lighting wasn't really good in the room, it felt like work, even with a book light (which put glare on the screen; I found myself constantly fiddling with it.))

Steve Chaput (stevec50) It took me a while before I got myself an e-reader. As I librarian I think I felt guilty about not using an actual book, but more and more library systems began offering e-books as an alternative. When a friend came to visit she showed me her nook and I immediately began considering a purchase. I'm lucky to have a wife nice enough to buy one for me last Christmas and I can't imagine now how I got along without it. I love it and love being able to carry around several of the books I'm reading without a heavy bag. Great for cruising or just sitting on the patio.
