Comprehensive How To Use Goodreads + Tips Of The Day

I am one happy camper :)
I discovered recently General GR Group Wide Discussions. I was interested in discussions on The Picture of Dorian Gray. Looking for alternative discussions on the book I was pointed in the direction of Discuss this book It can be found (not easily) by scrolling to the very bottom of the books reviews (before polls). As there were no particular active discussions happening I started up one of my own. Just to test the water. Yay. Random people have come in and joined the discussion.
This is the discussion.

It has been a bit of fun and something different to try.

Garmen it wasn't a particular group. It was open to all members of GR which is why I posted it in here, so people could see what is available.

You grab the URL of the image and then you write some html code is all you do so for example.
<0img src="URLGOESINHERE"0>
Just take out the 0's infront of img and at the end of ". It's the only way I can show the code.

No Sarah, I haven't had that problem..sounds annoying! But maybe you should go to the Goodreads Feedback group and pose the question. If you're not a member, just join, and make your own thread if you can't find a relevent one... http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...
Hope they can help you.

Danielle, you can create lots of lists on your bookshelves. I have (ahem.....) many actually, including my own TBR - to find at library.
Have a look at my profile / page and look at the list of bookshelves I have. Towards the end you'll see "TBR...." and three or four different types which I have listed for myself aside from the Goodreads Read/TBR/Currently Reading at the very top of the list.

I noticed it last night Knowledge. I had a bit of a look, and need to look more thoroughly. It looks quite good though.

They won't resist for long KL.

Under 'My Books' click the edit bookshelves button up the top left. Go to the bottom and create a bookshelf thats call..."
It's a handy too, I use the same thing for my 'To-Read-On-Shelf' and 'On-Hold' shelves

I'd like to let people know about a Aussie women writers book challenge I have organised for next year as part of the National Year of Reading campaign.
I've searched for challenges, but it appears no more can be added. Is there another place?
Cheers

Elizabeth, Mandy is no longer a moderator of this group, it's myself, Carmel and Laura who do all the challenges. We take suggestions from everyone in the group, and then incorporate them into our monthly/seasonal/annual challenges. We are currently working on the beginning of next years with the National Year of Reading, and we actually had a thread going where everyone put their ideas forward. If you'd like to PM one of us with all the details, we can see about putting it in there somewhere. We are very appreciative of suggestions!

We, the mods, would like to remind the members, and let the newbies know, about linking your book in your posts....it makes it much easier for anyone to look at the book you have read, check reviews etc. when deciding if they would like to read it themselves.
For those of you not sure how to do it, go to the 'add book/author' link at the top of your comment box, and after clicking on it, type in the name of your book. It will come up with a list, choose the correct title, and click on 'add'. It will then show in your comment box. When wanting to add the author, switch from 'book' to 'author' and click 'add' for the correct author. Down the bottom of the box, you will see 'cover', click on that if you want your book cover to show in the comment box.
I hope that is clear, and if anyone needs any questions answered, please ask, as there are many of us happy to help you all:)

I can't find a rescue button? Does anyone know where to look?

Go to:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...
And in the posting is a link to books at risk (you need to be logged in for it to work) once pressed it will take you to another page where there will be list of any of your books at risk - if there are no books then presume yours are ok for now - click either delete if you no longer want it, or rescue me if you do - fill in the fields and press the button - viola - all fixed!!!

Everything is almost done now. We, the librarians, and the GR staff have been working tirelessly for a week or so now, and the staff a lot longer I suspect. The reason the covers have disappeared from a lot of books is because we were told to just rescue using the required information, if we were pressed for time. That meant just book title and author, as the ISBN/ASIN was always there. As we can add covers at any time, and the rush to get it done, made the important information a priority.
Amazon set the deadline at 30th January, no exceptions, and only told GR on Friday 27th, late, that they were pulling the data from Kindle as well. So things have been rather frantic. I rescued a lot of books on my friend's lists, as well as my own, so hopefully no-one will have any trouble. But absolutely none of your input data will be lost, eg reviews etc. So don't worry there.
GR has imported 14M book records to the site from one company, and is using many more to get all the extra data.
IMO, everything will be a WHOLE lot better once everything is finalised in the next week or so. There'll be some tidying up to be done, for sure, but in the long run, things will improve for us all, out of sight.
Any questions from anyone at all, please feel free to ask....I will do my best to answer them for you:)

For anyone interested in becoming a librarian, the only qualification you need is 50 books on your shelf. Then click on this link http://www.goodreads.com/about/apply_...
It's very easy, there's a manual to read if you need help, and there's always someone there who has more experience and can help out, until you're the one with experience!
If I can do it, anyone can!

I got the email from goodreads but seemed unable to resurrect two books. One of whidh I didnt finish so it was no big deal but one I still have on my shelf and I really liked although she is an obscure (dead) author. Couldnt help that one either. This is a shame but what can we do about it? Hate thinking we have been beholden to Amazon all this time and noone else can pick up the slack!

Anne can you give me a link to that second book, so I can see if I can help you with it?

I actually applied to be one today :)

How does one get the grey italicised text after their name?
E.g. Laura, Tigger?

My avatar is both rainbowy and shadowy. It is also for privacy - especially as I have written books that could be somewhat controversial. For the same reason, I keep my exact whereabouts very quiet.

When you need to move forward to the next page say of a discussion, you must scroll to the very bottom of the current page. Can we please put the 'next page' thingy at the top? Or is there a faster way for me to move forward page by page rather than scrolling to the bottom of each page?
