Cynthia Paschen | 72 comments "Everything That Rises Must Converge" by the incredibly hilarious Flannery O'Connor. I think this one is better with age. I read it in college and found the stories a bit acid, but now I like her humor just fine.

Mercy | 2 comments I just finished Where the Heart Is and Dear John. Dear John was a struggle to finish but Billie Letts was refreshing.
I wish i could find more books like that

Maggie (sunshinewalker) | 1 comments I just finishsed the Iliad. I have to say I was rather dissapointed with it. I found it excedingly dry. Although, I enjoyed the history/Greek Mythology.

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments Just finished Jane Austen's opus Pride and Prejudice. My second Austen book and I am still in awe.

message 2855: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just finished Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych. It is short, and much more readable than The Kreutzer Sonata, but man is it dark.

message 2856: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (audrey_g) Lately the self help book, Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey, which can be found on the Goodreads site here:

Excellent book.

message 2863: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I finished A Sentimental Journey Through Italy and France a few days ago. Although I can see its importance as a novel in the 1700's and was advanced as a sort of stream of consciousness writing and in its writings about gender relations, it was just not there for me as an overall read I could recommend as it was a bit dull and the humor seems forced and trite by today's standards. The White Tiger, I also finished last night and I zipped through it in 2 or 3 days. It is a contemporary novel of India's underbelly of poverty and economic abuse and yet is also very funny and riveting. It won the 2008 Man Booker Prize. It reminds me of another book in India by an Indian born author, Animal's People, that I read. The former was one of 11 added to the list in 2010 and the latter was one of 11 removed from the list. I wonder if the Boxall editors felt White Tiger was a replacement for Animal's People? hmm. It is better but they are both excellent, 10/10, books.

message 2864: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) The last book I finished that was on the list was Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, which was a fantastic read =D

message 2866: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) Just finished The Purloined Letter and The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. The Fall was typical horror that you expect from Poe. The Letter was a surprise too me. It is a detective story. I enjoyed it.

For me, Invisible is even better than his NYT.

message 2868: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments I just finished Cost by Roxana Robinson. I am not really into melodrama but since it is part of 1001, I have to read this and I was surprised that I liked it. Out of the 99 1001 books I read so far, this for me is the Best Family Drama by a mile!

message 2869: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Finished "Decline and Fall", Evelyn Waugh's, first novel, and thought it marvelous. So funny and full of pithy observations! I am going to re-read one section tonight -- to make sure it sinks in. I thought it was that good!

Vikki (vikkijo) | 110 comments Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was a bit different than what I had thought it would be, but an easy enjoyable book.

Not my kind of book. I really struggled with Ghosts (story #2) - I suppose I was as bored as the narrator - and really had to force myself to finish the book. I wanted to like it but felt it was more style than substance.

message 2884: by Sissy (new)

Sissy All the Pretty Horses. My favorite so far out of the three McCarthy books I've read. (The Road and Blood Meridian)

message 2885: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments Just finished William Beckford's Vathek. It's an amazing gothic fantasy classic!

message 2886: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I finished reading Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls today. It was an interesting read, very telling of Russian rural society in the 19th century. I did get a bit muddled as to what was going on in the second part of the book (then again, parts of the manuscript was missing and incomplete since the author died before he could complete it). Will have to re-read it again at some point.

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Finished the first of the New York Trilogy by Paul Auster this weekend - "City of Glass". I liked it, but not sure I feel drawn to read a great deal by this author. I'll check in again when I finish "Ghosts" and then "The Locked Room". But I do like him....

Sissy i thought it was much more engaging than the road - there was just more story. i've also seen the movie so i don't know if that influenced my perceptions about the book at all - since i really enjoyed the film.
