Which LIST book did you just finish?

Although I've now started Everything is Illuminated, Jane Eyre is next on my list. For some reason I had never read it either! I read the first couple of pages yesterday and it really drew me in right away. I'm looking forward to it!

The latter, I loved, even though I'd read it before (I just didn't remember it well, so I read it again).

Awesome, Carrie! Owen Meany is my favorite book. I'm hoping to start Jane Eyre soon also.

Jane Eyre was formative in my childhood. I must have read it half a dozen times in junior high.

It took overly long because I read it in semi-confusion most of the time. I really wanted to like it and "get" it; but no doubt I missed a great deal. So Welsh! Still, I rather enjoyed it.

July's People
I know the discussion starts "tomorrow", but it's been the 15th here in Australia all day - so I'm going to say a little about my feelings toward it...
I have not been able to read anything by Gordimer previously - several false starts. But I got into this book easily, and enjoyed the writing, even if I wasn't clear about everything that was happening. I'm looking forward to the discussion this month.

It's one of my favourites, too!

I felt the same way about Cowgirls and Robbins, Melinda, and I read him in my 20s.

In regards to July's People, I had a rough time with the first 30 pages or so. Gordimer dropped us into the middle of the action, which is supposed to be tried and true, but I had a hard time keeping track of the characters because of it (let alone empathizing). When I finally caught up to them about thirty pages in, I really enjoyed the book. The changes in the Maureen character and July character were really fascinating...

I'm fairly certain I would have felt the same way about him in my 20's also. Just not my cup of tea.

Just started Time Machine too. How did you like it?

Jane Eyre was the book that started my love of reading. It has everything, suspense, mystery, romance, and a happy ending.

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I enjoyed it a lot. I'm looking forward to reading his second book as well.

I really enjoyed Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which I read last year. I'm planning on reading Everything is Illuminated this year.

I loved that book!

Ditto for me, Melinda!

It was a really well-written book, but it was quite bleak, too, and its dark, bitter humour made me sad for the writer.

I couldn't get through that book fast enough to move on. Now, on to another from the list :D

O człowieku. Wybór pism filozoficznych by Józef Tischner

This was a little bit weird for me.

I totally agree.

I just read The Hours last year and really liked it. However, I also really liked Cowgirls, which I read many, many years ago. "
From the reviews I've read on GR, people are pretty split on Cowgirls. Actually it seems that way with a lot of books- you love it or you hate it. I also noticed that a lot of people mentioned they had loved Cowgirls when they were younger.
I couldn't get into the details of the ClockWork people. There were really so many things- I found myself disliking Tom Robbins quite a bit through his writing here. My sister in law (who I love and respect deeply) loves it, and loves all Tom Robbins books. It's interesting to me (after only recently becoming active on Good Reads) how very subjective book-love can be!
