Michelle Lour | 15 comments I just finished Jane Eyre. I am kicking myself for not trying this book years ago, loved it!

Melinda (missmelinda) Michelle wrote: "I just finished Jane Eyre. I am kicking myself for not trying this book years ago, loved it!"

Although I've now started Everything is Illuminated, Jane Eyre is next on my list. For some reason I had never read it either! I read the first couple of pages yesterday and it really drew me in right away. I'm looking forward to it!

message 2353: by Sawyer (new)

Sawyer | 2 comments I just finished Robinson Crusoe and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I've mixed feelings about the former as, while interesting, it's a little frustrating that only a third of the book goes into his many adventures (without much detail, I might add) while the other two thirds were a "how to survive on a desert island" guide.

The latter, I loved, even though I'd read it before (I just didn't remember it well, so I read it again).

message 2354: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 1 comments I just finished "A Prayer for Owen Meany" which I loved. For such a long book, it felt like a quick read. Starting "Jane Eyre" tomorrow...!

Awesome, Carrie! Owen Meany is my favorite book. I'm hoping to start Jane Eyre soon also.

Gini | 138 comments Michelle wrote: "I just finished Jane Eyre. I am kicking myself for not trying this book years ago, loved it!"

Jane Eyre was formative in my childhood. I must have read it half a dozen times in junior high.

message 2358: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I finally finished "The Old Devils" by Kingsley Amis.

It took overly long because I read it in semi-confusion most of the time. I really wanted to like it and "get" it; but no doubt I missed a great deal. So Welsh! Still, I rather enjoyed it.

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Just finished "July's People" by Nadine Gordimer. Struggled with it a bit at the beginning, but ending up enjoying it.

message 2360: by Chelsi (new)

July's People

I know the discussion starts "tomorrow", but it's been the 15th here in Australia all day - so I'm going to say a little about my feelings toward it...

I have not been able to read anything by Gordimer previously - several false starts. But I got into this book easily, and enjoyed the writing, even if I wasn't clear about everything that was happening. I'm looking forward to the discussion this month.

Chris

It's one of my favourites, too!

I felt the same way about Cowgirls and Robbins, Melinda, and I read him in my 20s.

message 2364: by Anthony (new)

Anthony DeCastro | 168 comments Chris,

In regards to July's People, I had a rough time with the first 30 pages or so. Gordimer dropped us into the middle of the action, which is supposed to be tried and true, but I had a hard time keeping track of the characters because of it (let alone empathizing). When I finally caught up to them about thirty pages in, I really enjoyed the book. The changes in the Maureen character and July character were really fascinating...

I'm fairly certain I would have felt the same way about him in my 20's also. Just not my cup of tea.

Jane Eyre was the book that started my love of reading. It has everything, suspense, mystery, romance, and a happy ending.

message 2381: by M (new)

M (masanobu) | 110 comments I finally finished Everything That Rises Must Converge, by Flannery O'Connor.
It was a really well-written book, but it was quite bleak, too, and its dark, bitter humour made me sad for the writer.

message 2382: by Trisha (new)

Trisha I just finished Madam Bovary. I had been told to hold out reading the introduction until I was done with the book. I was so glad I did! The intro was BETTER than the book.
I couldn't get through that book fast enough to move on. Now, on to another from the list :D

message 2389: by Jay (new)

Jay (jaycadiramen) | 43 comments Just finished 'Foucault's Pendulum' by Umberto Eco. A part of me disliked it so much that I never want to see the book again, and another part of me wants to read it again to find out if it is any better the second time around once I know what I'm in for.

message 2390: by Lauli (new)

Lauli | 263 comments Just back from my holidays! Read some at the beach. Finished "Of Love and Shadows" by Isabel Allende and "The Shipping News" by E. Annie Proulx. The former was ok, but not Allende's best. Proulx's I really loved.

message 2391: by Johnny (new)

Johnny B. Rempit (johnnyrempit) | 20 comments Finished Kafka's The Trial. Eerily 'current', if you know what I mean.

message 2393: by Michelle (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments Just finished the first volume of Kristin Lavransdatter.

message 2400: by Julia (new)

Julia (jujulia) | 37 comments Finished Anna Karenina - what a wonderful book, i'm really sad it's finished....i tried to really savour the last couple of pages - one of the deepest, all-engrossing reads of a long time, Tolstoy had real genius....So many topics are addressed, so many great characters (main and secondary) people this book, the writing is beautifully elegant and clear - one of my absolute favourites, must read more Tolstoy in the future.....
