We by Zamayatin, think I spelt it right, also read Behind the scenes at the museum, not on the list but a better book than some that are. Hard to put down, funny, sad and also had me outraged at one point.Inna
Iain Banks is brilliant, my favourite is the Crow Road, followed by Dead Air.
Just finished Cry, the Beloved Country and I really enjoyed this story which ended in redemption and hope (something I am finding is rare in contemp fiction). The most challenging thing is the way the dialogue is written without quote marks.
I just finished The Blind Assassin. It was my first by Margaret Atwood and I thought it was amazing.
I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Frankenstein, and Rebecca in the last few weeks. All were good, but Rebecca was brilliant.

For a moment you frightened me. I couldn't imagine how Meyer's books could possibly be on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list. I am relieved to reconfirm that they are not. While you may be enjoying them, I think you are missing the point of this particular group.
I just finished The Poisonwood Bible and I really didn't like it. It was okay for the first two thirds and then fell apart for me.
Just finished The Recognitions by Gaddis. Also read Watership down from the BBC top 100, on a lighter note.
I finished Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney recently. The book was short, good and interesting. My only problem was it left too many unanswered questions. The second person narration was very effective as I really felt like him, I felt his need for Bolivian Marching Powder, his anger, his obsession, his self-loathing...etc.
I am going to continue on and read more of Jay McInerney's work.
Note: again...like usual I have no clue if this book is on the list.
I just finished The Summer Book. It is twenty-two grandmother and granddaughter vignettes of their life on an island in the Gulf of Finland during the summer. It was delightful with a sad undercurrent.
I just finished reading Gunslinger by Stephen King. Weird and boring. =)http://www.cardshark.com/content/view...
The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Purloined Letter. All by Edgar Allen Poe. Good, good, bad.
just finished "wuthering heights" which i loved and then the new philip roth novel "the humbling" which i read in one sitting....very absorbing.

I've never read Possession A Romance, but I was addicted to The Virgin in the Garden A Novel, which leads into a series.
Even if you don't follow the series, Virgin can definitely stand on its own...it throughly gave me a taste of Byatt
I'm just finishing The Life of Pi and so far i really find it way more absorbing than i thought it would be - a really original plot, likable characters and good writing - can recommend it....
A fine balance, a sad book but with lots of humour, really enjoyed the story and liked the main characters.
Has anybody ever read The Plumed Serpent/D H Lawrence?some good parts but seemed racist/chavenist to me-opinions?
I finished Les Miserables The Novel tonight. I loved it. At times it took a lot of effort to get through but in the end definitely worth it.
I just finished On the Road. I wish I had read it when I was younger. I think it has a bigger impact on people who read it in their teens or early twenties.
Just finished Fahrenheit 451 and really enjoyed it. I don't know how I managed to not read it in high school or college but I finally got around to it. My 13 year old picked it up as soon as I was done with it and is about 1/3 of the way through it.
Allison - Yea for your 13 yo! Fahrenheit 451 is a classic dystopia novel and should be on the 1001 Books list. Don't understand how it was excluded.

I very much feel this way. I have read 2-3 books while reading this simply because while I really like it, there are moments that make it very difficult to keep reading. I will finish it though!
The enigma of arrival, seemed longer than it was. Also read Fair stood the wind for France, which though very good isn't on the list.
Just finished Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I have to read some lighter stuff after that experience. Really depressing.
Fall On Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald. Somehow I was expecting something more epic. Three stars: I loved the beginning and the end but the middle dragged for me.
I've just finished Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Quite interesting and different from what I expected.
Just finished "Foucault's Pendulum". I didn't think I would, it was really hard to get going. I liked the ending, though. It should be 300 pages shorter.
