Jen | 6 comments I just read On Beauty by Zadie Smith and was pretty blown away! It's so exciting to read a book that terrific by a young woman - she makes our generation proud!

Barbara The Catcher In The Rye

message 104: by Ana (new)

Ana | 20 comments Just finished "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"

message 105: by Kate (new)

Kate I just finished _Smiley's People_ by John Le Carre. It is the last book in the series about George Smiley, but the first one I read, which is perfect because I always read the last few pages of a book once I get acquainted with the major characters - a horrible habit that I really regretted when with _Bel Canto_ but one which I cannot break.

Anyway, I found _Smiley's People_ ultimately to be enjoyable - it was a bit slow-paced and the tension never really built to a crescendo, but was very satisfying in the end. What do you all think?

message 106: by Yelena (new)

Yelena Malcolm | 105 comments Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. It was a three-star, but the ending was, well, for lack of a better word, lame.

message 113: by Dottie (last edited Jan 18, 2008 08:20AM) (new)

Dottie (oxymoronid) Latest read was Northanger Abbey. And the PBS Sunday evening series of Austen productions this week (Jan 20)will be Northanger Abbey by serendipitous coincidence so I'm really looking forward to that.

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Kim and everyone else who has chosen it....

What did you think of Slow Man and Coetzee in general? I read Disgrace with some distaste, though that was not my only reaction, and am trying to decide if I want to try him again.

Thanks,
Judith

message 115: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I just finished Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis. I gave it five stars. Hilarious! I'm on to A Conferacy of Dunces next.

Read on!
Judith

message 116: by Nora (new)

Nora | 2 comments The Color Purple. Amazing.

message 117: by Martha (new)

Martha | 2 comments I just finished The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and plan to read more of her stuff.

message 118: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I really like that one of hers, but I didn't enjoy Ethan Frome, so I don't really know what to think of her as an author.

message 119: by Smarti (new)

Smarti | 39 comments Heinrich Mann: Professor Unrat!
Really good, read them Germans :).

I've also read Disgrace recently: the writing was good but I was also kind of disgusted by the book. So I also don't know what to say but I think that for a while this will stay my only experience with Coetzee... there are sooo much other really good books out there :)

message 120: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberpic) | 19 comments Hideous Kinky by Esther Freud

Are you watching the Masterpiece Theater special?
I have and am thoroughly enjoying it.

message 124: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Just finished The Sun Also Rises.
Mighty good, I might say, mighty good :-).

message 125: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 16 comments i just finished the Wasp Factory. it paces well and i read it in a short amount of time. it was disturbing, yet... good. my mind can hardly wrap around that. very surprising for an author's first novel. there were a few holes in the story, but overall, disturbingly good.

message 126: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Yes, Barbara, I have been watching the PBS series. I agree that it has been very good overall. I look forward to this week's adaptation of Mansfield Park.

message 127: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments A Confederacy of Dunces John Kennedy Toole

A hilarious farce throughout! It might have been shorter... a little laborious and tiring at times, but overall very creative and just plain funny. I could visualize it as a play on stage -- scene by scene...

message 128: by Jen (new)

Jen (jeninseattle) The last I finished was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Really enjoyed it. Not sure what the next thing will be, but I'm totally open to suggestions!

Before that on the list that I actually finished was Atonement which I also loved.

message 129: by Claire (new)

Claire | 1 comments I just finished Neuromancer and Atonement. I didn't even realize Atonement was on the list!

I just finished Leonardo's Swan by Karen Essex

message 131: by Nicole (last edited Jan 27, 2008 07:54PM) (new)

Nicole | 4 comments I just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. While I thought it was interesting and a good read, I wasn't in love with the book. Regardless of that fact, I'm glad I read it. Next I'm going to try and get my hands on The Golden Notebook, any comments?

message 132: by Sarah (Ceekayy) (new)

message 134: by Kecia (new)

Kecia | 37 comments I recently finished Philip Roth's, Portnoy's Complaint...the humor was too base for my taste. I'm currently on A. S. Byatt's, Possession...which I'm really enjoying!!!

Nicole - The Golden Notebook is wonderful! It took me a long time to get into, say at least 250 pages, but once I did I was really sucked in. I borrowed mine from the library but now I would like to purchase a copy for my own library. There is so much there that I would like to revisit often. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, but give time because it's slow going in the beginning.

message 135: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Read on! The Golden Notebook is well worth the read!

message 136: by Anne (new)

Anne | 10 comments The Graduate - Charles Webb (I hated the main character so much more than I ever did while watching the movie)

The Devil and Miss Prym - Paulo Coehlo (fast read, suspenseful morality tale)

message 137: by Monika (new)

Monika | 9 comments Hola...I'm a new member. Just finished reading 'The Life of Pi.' Unlike most people I've spoken with, I liked the beginning 1/3 of the book better than the middle. End was great too. I enjoyed some of the more abstract ideas but I wouldn't say it was one of my faves.

message 138: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 4 comments Thanks guys! I'm going to going to try and get The Golden Notebook from the library this week.

message 141: by Yelena (new)

Yelena Malcolm | 105 comments White Teeth by Zadie Smith.

And Bronwyn, I am so glad you enjoyed Master and Margarita. I think it's an incredible work and it is one of my first go-to recommendations.

message 142: by Emma (new)

Emma (elpryan) Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway) and Handmaid's Tale (Atwood). Old Man was a quick read, nothing revolutionary. Handmaid's Tale was a horrifying depiction of what fear could do to a society. Highly worth the read!

message 143: by Josh (new)

Josh (neverforever) | 10 comments Just finished the last temptation. Took just under two weeks to finish.
Anyone who is concerned about the reputation of this book should ignore the hype. I found this to be on a spiritual par with that of the bible. The plight of Jesus has never been so eloquently described.
This is definitely one book to read before you die!

message 144: by penny (new)

penny | 1 comments Last night Middlesex kept me up several hours later than I had planned. It was good enough to lose sleep over. I am new to the group and Middlesex was a deciding factor on whether to join or not. It had been sitting beside my bed for a month in the to-be-read queue. Definitely worth reading.
Orlando is in the started but never finished pile, it may be next.

message 145: by Monika (new)

Monika | 9 comments Thanks Josh -I've had this on my bookshelf for a while now...maybe that will be my next read after I finish Little Women.

message 146: by Yelena (new)

Yelena Malcolm | 105 comments The Book of Illusions - Paul Auster. One grudging star.

message 147: by Tim (new)

Tim (sparklin) | 8 comments I just joined with this group and accidentally ran into the 1001 list a few weeks ago. I went through it and found I've read about 75 of these so far (hooray for college lit!). Next book is Disgrace.

message 148: by Debbie (new)

Debbie The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. What a lovely little book. I can't believe I never got around to reading it before.

message 149: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 20 comments One of my all time favorites! "The Yellow Wallpaper" was an inspirational book for the '60's and '70's feminist movement. Try Gilman's book of her writings, too. And/or her utopian novel: Herland.
