Finished "The Lover" today. I thought it was good but I'm not sure I'm a total fan of her style of writing. Started "The Reader" tonight. Oddly both books involve an affair between an underage adolescent and 30-something adult. Pure accident on my part, I swear!

With Dickens you expect it because he was paid by the word but sometimes you just want to shout "get on with it" or you get to the end of the book and think that it really could have been half as long and just as good (if not better).
Money by Martin Amis. I thought this one would read a bit faster than it did. He jumped around a bit and blacked out without remembering so many times it was a bit hard to keep up with. it was def. interesting though. :)
Just finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Murakami, Haruki. This one too me awhile to read, I probably started last year July and only just finished it. It's so complex, so detailed and there is much to ponder while reading.
The end was well worth the time it took reading it. What a great book.
Just finished the first book in 2666 by Roberto Bolano. It was absolutely amazing. I finished it last night and I've already started on the second book. Too bad I actually have to go to work sometimes. Otherwise I'd spend all my time reading.
I just read 'Wise Children' by Angela Carter--very fun writing style, great female characters. I think it was cut from the newer list, but I recommend it.
I just finished "The Name of Rose". I thought the writing was quite good, but story was very boring to me.
I finished "The Awakening" not long ago. Another excellent author and story. Absolutely great descriptions.
I finished "The English Patient" yesterday. It was great. I track the books I read and this one is one of those that is better than about 20 others. Great character interaction and interesting story.
I just finished The Reader a little while ago. I thought the story was intriguing, just at the right length too. The tone of the narrator was just right for the story too; it kept me interested.
Recently finished:The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Dead Babies by Martin Amis
I just finished The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's one of my favorite movies, but I was disapointed that the book was so similar. It's literally the same words spoken in the film. Oh well.
Niche wrote: "A little late but I just finished If Not Now, When? by Primo Levi."Niche: I was wondering what you thought of If Not Now, When? I read Levi's Survival at Auschwitz aka If This Is A Man last year, and it was very very moving. One of the best Holocaust books I've ever read.

Just finished Brave New World (Huxley), was thoroughly creeped out by it! I think I would be one of the people wanting to go to Iceland.
Niche: how was Do Android's Dream.
I finished Sylvia Townsend Warner's "After the death of Don Juan" last week. An odd book, but easy to read.
Emilee wrote: "Niche: how was Do Android's Dream."I loved it, thanks. I'm not liking Ender's Game as much though. I'm stalled out 3/4th through the book.

While Nineteen Minutes was splendid, it is not a 1001 book, as none of Picoult's books are.
I just finished Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. It was awesome and everyone should read it to their child(ren), in my opinion. I had read it as a child and had it read to me to but needed to reread it as it had been a long time since I had read it. This may be the only juvenile entry on the 08 list.
I just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Ragtime by Doctorow. I loved Never Let Me Go. As someone else mentioned, it will haunt me for a long time. I thought Ragtime was ok, but I don't know if it was 'list worthy'.
Finished The House in Paris tonight. I was going to be a good student and read it again before the book club discussion but I've got to read something else first. I don't know what to read next! I'm totally overwhelmed. I kept this "1001 books" thing in perspective for a while but now, it's starting to blow my mind. Here's what's in the queue, maybe you all would help me with some suggestions:
1. The Secret History
2. The Cider House Rules
3. Lady Chatterley's Lover
4. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Thanks!
I just finished The Watchmen. It is the sole graphic novel on the list and I had my doubts but it ranks right up there as one of the best reads so far on the list.
I just finished House of Leaves. It was the embodiment of everything I don't like about contemporary lit. And now I want my six hours back.
I just finished The Call of the Wild by Jack London. It was a reread as I had read it years ago. It was excellent.
I have just read The Legend of Drenea: The refuge of Alta by Brandon Payan, my flat mate found it at the market under a clearance isle. It was great you can find it on Amazon.
I just finished Les Miserables last night. I started it way back in september on my way to Iraq and just completed the 1470 page epic. It was a beautiful story that I would love to re-read, but I think I'm going to stick to the abridged version next time.
