message 1301: by Camille (new)

Camille (thefiercepanda) | 6 comments Finished "The Lover" today. I thought it was good but I'm not sure I'm a total fan of her style of writing. Started "The Reader" tonight. Oddly both books involve an affair between an underage adolescent and 30-something adult. Pure accident on my part, I swear!

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments Finished Moll Flanders last night.

Kat (katheriner1990) Emma wrote: "I'm not quite finished with Moll Flanders but had the same experience. They just took longer to say things in those earlier centuries, didn't they? :)

Most definitely! With Dickens you expect it because he was paid by the word but sometimes you just want to shout "get on with it" or you get to the end of the book and think that it really could have been half as long and just as good (if not better).

Stephanie (sbez05) | 32 comments 1984. Loved it.

message 1305: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments Money by Martin Amis. I thought this one would read a bit faster than it did. He jumped around a bit and blacked out without remembering so many times it was a bit hard to keep up with. it was def. interesting though. :)

message 1306: by Nadia (new)

Nadia Khan | 11 comments Just finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Murakami, Haruki.

This one too me awhile to read, I probably started last year July and only just finished it. It's so complex, so detailed and there is much to ponder while reading.

The end was well worth the time it took reading it. What a great book.

message 1307: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Just finished "The Yellow Wallpaper". Very short, but very, very good.

message 1308: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 30 comments Just finished the first book in 2666 by Roberto Bolano. It was absolutely amazing. I finished it last night and I've already started on the second book. Too bad I actually have to go to work sometimes. Otherwise I'd spend all my time reading.

message 1309: by Galen (new)

Galen Johnson (galenj) | 33 comments I just read 'Wise Children' by Angela Carter--very fun writing style, great female characters. I think it was cut from the newer list, but I recommend it.

message 1310: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 3 comments I just finished "The Name of Rose". I thought the writing was quite good, but story was very boring to me.

message 1312: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I finished "The Awakening" not long ago. Another excellent author and story. Absolutely great descriptions.

message 1313: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I finished "The English Patient" yesterday. It was great. I track the books I read and this one is one of those that is better than about 20 others. Great character interaction and interesting story.

message 1314: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I just finished The Reader a little while ago. I thought the story was intriguing, just at the right length too. The tone of the narrator was just right for the story too; it kept me interested.

message 1315: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Recently finished:

The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Dead Babies by Martin Amis

message 1316: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments Time's Arrow by Martin Amis. Excellent. 5 out of 5.

message 1317: by Niche (new)

Niche A little late but I just finished If Not Now, When? by Primo Levi.

message 1318: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) I just finished The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's one of my favorite movies, but I was disapointed that the book was so similar. It's literally the same words spoken in the film. Oh well.

message 1320: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Niche wrote: "A little late but I just finished If Not Now, When? by Primo Levi."

Niche: I was wondering what you thought of If Not Now, When? I read Levi's Survival at Auschwitz aka If This Is A Man last year, and it was very very moving. One of the best Holocaust books I've ever read.

I thought it worked better as a film myself.

Amy (bibliocrates) | 29 comments Jacha wrote: "Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. It's the first book of her Ive read but definalty not the last one. What an amazing story!"

Is Nineteen Minutes a 1001 book?

message 1325: by Samara (new)

Samara Just finished Brave New World (Huxley), was thoroughly creeped out by it! I think I would be one of the people wanting to go to Iceland.

message 1326: by [deleted user] (new)

Jany Eyre

message 1327: by [deleted user] (new)

Niche: how was Do Android's Dream.

message 1329: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments I finished Sylvia Townsend Warner's "After the death of Don Juan" last week. An odd book, but easy to read.

message 1330: by Niche (new)

Niche Emilee wrote: "Niche: how was Do Android's Dream."
I loved it, thanks. I'm not liking Ender's Game as much though. I'm stalled out 3/4th through the book.

While Nineteen Minutes was splendid, it is not a 1001 book, as none of Picoult's books are.

message 1332: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Where Angels Fear to Tread by E.M. Forster

message 1334: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments The Honor of Katharena Blum by Heinrich Boll. excellent.

message 1335: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I just finished The Book Thief, though not on the list. I loved it.

message 1336: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I just finished The Outsider (The Stranger) by Albert Camus. It was excellent.

message 1337: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I just finished Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. It was awesome and everyone should read it to their child(ren), in my opinion. I had read it as a child and had it read to me to but needed to reread it as it had been a long time since I had read it. This may be the only juvenile entry on the 08 list.

message 1338: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliemoncton) | 54 comments I just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Ragtime by Doctorow. I loved Never Let Me Go. As someone else mentioned, it will haunt me for a long time. I thought Ragtime was ok, but I don't know if it was 'list worthy'.

message 1339: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I can't believe it took me so long to read it.

message 1340: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (zildjian35) | 22 comments Finished Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, removed from the new list, and thought it was amazing!

message 1341: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments Finished The House in Paris tonight. I was going to be a good student and read it again before the book club discussion but I've got to read something else first. I don't know what to read next! I'm totally overwhelmed. I kept this "1001 books" thing in perspective for a while but now, it's starting to blow my mind.

Here's what's in the queue, maybe you all would help me with some suggestions:
1. The Secret History
2. The Cider House Rules
3. Lady Chatterley's Lover
4. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Thanks!

message 1342: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments I finished perfume by Patrick Suskind as well as Timbuktu by Paul Auster.

message 1343: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I just finished The Watchmen. It is the sole graphic novel on the list and I had my doubts but it ranks right up there as one of the best reads so far on the list.

message 1344: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished House of Leaves. It was the embodiment of everything I don't like about contemporary lit. And now I want my six hours back.

message 1345: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I just finished The Call of the Wild by Jack London. It was a reread as I had read it years ago. It was excellent.

message 1346: by Damien (new)

Damien Cavascos (damious1264) | 1 comments I have just read The Legend of Drenea: The refuge of Alta by Brandon Payan, my flat mate found it at the market under a clearance isle. It was great you can find it on Amazon.

message 1347: by André (new)

André Nogueira (twiggysp) The 120 Days of Sodoma by Marquis de Sade

message 1348: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments I just finished Les Miserables last night. I started it way back in september on my way to Iraq and just completed the 1470 page epic. It was a beautiful story that I would love to re-read, but I think I'm going to stick to the abridged version next time.

message 1349: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments I just finished The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan. very....demented

message 1350: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Just finished The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Victor Hugo). Kinda hate the ending. And the infrastructure description bored me. I prefer Les Miserables 100x.
