Clockwork Orange

message 1252: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 32 comments Just finished Unless by Carol Shields (on the 2006 list). It was alright, though I really don't think I'd consider it a must-read.

message 1253: by Eva (new)

Eva | 60 comments I just finished Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I liked the desciption of the culture and the intrusion from the white man, but the main character annoyed me - maybe because I'm a woman...

message 1254: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments I finished Written on the Body last night. A writing teacher in college had recommended it and I had tried to start it then without success. It's beautifully poetic but still not really my thing.

message 1255: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments The Call of the Wild, really good short story with a great ending.

message 1256: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (darcy-elizabeth) | 34 comments The Bell Jar

message 1257: by Samara (new)

Samara Fear of Flying (Erica Jong) - meh, was okay.

message 1258: by Lenoir (new)

Lenoir | 27 comments I just finished The Color Purple and I loved it. It turned out to be not at all what I was expecting.

message 1259: by Christophe0808 (new)

Christophe0808 | 16 comments A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell. Finally!

message 1260: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 290 comments Norweski dziennik t.2 - obce ścieżki

message 1261: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments I just finished Anne Brontë's "Agnes Grey". It was okay but a bit slow. Nothing like her sisters' books.

message 1262: by Annemaria (new)

Annemaria | 12 comments Breakfast at Tiffany's, Wide Sargasso Sea, Pride and Prejudice, and Mrs Dalloway.

message 1263: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ragtime by E. L. Doctorow. Very interesting.

message 1264: by Niche (new)

Niche I just finished Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham. It was a good book although I could not identify with the main character.

Melissa (So Cal Gal) | 8 comments The Hours by Mark Cunningham. It was better then I expected, but not at all what i expected when i started reading it.

message 1266: by Mike (new)

Mike | 16 comments Finished Candide. Now reading Vonnegut.

message 1267: by Aletta (new)

Aletta | 1 comments Lenoir wrote: "I just finished The Color Purple and I loved it. It turned out to be not at all what I was expecting. "I read it many, many, many years ago and loved it

message 1268: by Monique (last edited Feb 05, 2009 06:50PM) (new)

Monique (moniquereads) | 9 comments Beloved by Toni Morrison and it is now one of my favorite books

message 1269: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) CHOKE...I enjoyed it, more than FIGHT CLUB. I plan on reading more Palahniuk, even if it delays progress on my 1001!

message 1270: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments Mahogany wrote: "Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Huraton"

One of my all-time faves! Gorgeous book.

message 1271: by Camille (new)

Camille (thefiercepanda) | 6 comments I finally finished "The Dead Father". I thought it was dreadful.

message 1272: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I just finished "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin. I loved the writing style and the story was so far ahead of its time that the author ruined her writing career publishing it when she did in 1899.

message 1273: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Gaston wrote: "As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. It wasn't on the list. However, it has to be a top 5 book of all time for me. Simply amazing."

I so-o-o agree with you!

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Skt wrote: "Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Very original!"

Be sure to see the movie version if you haven't already. It was excellently done!

I have to agree with you on Unless, Stephanie. This one was taken off the 2009, more international version; and I was pleased.

message 1276: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorihahn54) | 27 comments Just finished An Obedient father by Akhil Sharma, hard book to read considering the subject matter is child molestion and political corruption. Not for the squeamish.

message 1277: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliemoncton) | 54 comments Just finished Zorba the Greek - wonderful hero - great model on how to live life - and A Confederacy of Dunces - horrible characters with very few redeeming qualities. Interesting to compare the 2 main characters. Although Confederacy was well written, not at all my cup of tea.

Camille (thefiercepanda) | 6 comments Judith wrote: "Skt wrote: "Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Very original!"

Hmmm, I've been wondering about the movie, because the book impressed me very much.

Enigma. Bliżej prawdy - for mathematicians interested in crypthology

message 1280: by Niche (new)

Niche Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. Short, easy read but it was hard in the beginning to get acclimated a whole new world that I needn't already know any of the rules to.

message 1281: by Leila (new)

Leila (leilatre) | 40 comments I just finished Infinite Jest and picked up In Cold Blood. I really enjoyed Infinite Jest, but it took me about 2 months to read, so I'm ready for some quicker reads right about now.

message 1282: by Katie ATX (new)

Katie ATX (katieatx) | 74 comments The Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe. Interesting and odd.

message 1283: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Just finished the ambassadors by Henry James.
Judith
Also wondering what makes the 2008 version more international, when both lists include books from all continents and a variety of countries.

message 1284: by Stewart (new)

Stewart (thebookstopshere) I finished Saul Bellow's Dangling Man. When I close the book I was going is-that-it? but a few days on and it's lingering in my mind, gaining depth and appreciation.

message 1285: by Niche (new)

Niche I just finished The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. The book book does not go as in depth into the characters as I would have liked it to.

Good question. Well, that is my assessment from an American/British reader's perspective since many new non-American/non-British authors were substituted on the 2008 list. I haven't actually compared the number of countries represented, but I certainly saw many more unfamiliar foreign names on the later list, and many American and British novels were removed -- more novels than authors though...

message 1287: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 32 comments Just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - it was a great read.

message 1288: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (zildjian35) | 22 comments Just completed Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. Quick read and makes you think outside of the box, especially in the areas of religion and patriotism. However, this is the second book I've read from this particular author and his style just isn't well suited for my particular tastes.

message 1289: by Diniasih (new)

Diniasih | 6 comments @Camille: the movie is good too...but still cant compete the book :)

message 1290: by Laura (booksnob) (new)

Laura (booksnob) | 5 comments Finished The Wonderful O by James Thurber. An inventive tale. I highly recommend it.

message 1291: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished Villette. I read it online at work and it took FOREVER. An enjoyable story, some parts are incredibly slow and lend nothing at all to the book.

message 1292: by Kat (new)

Kat (katheriner1990) Just finished Frankenstein, which was good, although the writing style grated on me at the beginning. Once I got into it though it was quite fast-paced.

message 1293: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments I finished Calvino's collection "Our ancestors" last week, and Fitzgerald's "Tender is the night" and Capote's "In cold blood" this week. All good books.

message 1294: by elliss (last edited Feb 15, 2009 01:58AM) (new)

elliss (syaeeranasirymailcom) | 1 comments i just finished 'mr. cavendish, i presume' and i think i would give the book 2 and a half star.. not more.. hehehe..

currently, i'm reading succubus blue and twilight.. the former will takes sometime to finish, while the later is just about time.. i know, i know, i'm a little bit behind.. perhaps most (if not all) of you have already reread twilight (and others) like a thousand time, while i havnt even finish one yet.. pity me..

message 1295: by Mike (new)

Mike | 16 comments Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Very surreal, very funny.

message 1296: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniquereads) | 9 comments Catcher In The Rye by JD Salinger

message 1297: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments Katherine wrote: "Just finished Frankenstein, which was good, although the writing style grated on me at the beginning. Once I got into it though it was quite fast-paced."

I'm not quite finished with Moll Flanders but had the same experience. They just took longer to say things in those earlier centuries, didn't they? :)

message 1298: by Tani (new)

Tani I finished two books today, Wide Sargasso Sea and A Clockwork Orange. I loved the language in both of them, although they were obviously very different books in general.

message 1299: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Just finished Middlesex - right on time for the discussion!

message 1300: by Camille (new)

Camille (thefiercepanda) | 6 comments Finished "The Lover" today. I thought it was good but I'm not sure I'm a total fan of her style of writing. Started "The Reader" tonight. Oddly both books involve an affair between an underage adolescent and 30-something adult. Pure accident on my part, I swear!
