The Scarlet Letter. It was a bit difficult to get into because of the old-fashioned language but once I'd read past the introduction I was fascinated.

Another good Victorian Romance from the wonderful Bronte sisters.

Agreed! A simple quick story about young and old and simple life.

Like Austen but written by a man with male protagonists instead of female. Glad to have read!

Heather | 10 comments I just finished reading Watchmen. It took me forever to get through this book and the best thing I can say about it is that I am glad it is over.

Hah, glad I'm not the only one to say Yuck, how did you like the lack of punctuation? Did you have a hard time figuring out what was dialogue and what was internal prose, and who was speaking to whom?

Didn't like it either.

I just finished The Great Gatsby. Not knowing practically anything about it, the end more or less took me by surprise.
I liked it.

Yes, though it did a number on me. And suddenly, I got the beginning lines all too well.

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Choke.

I don't see at all how this could get on the List. I still want to try more of Palahniuk's, but I sure hope I like my next selection better. This was clever but not much else. I "got it" but just am not impressed. I will say, it was a quick read and not annoying just - meh.

message 7423: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 122 comments Billy Budd--- I had to rate this just three stars. Melville's language, although clear and distinct, is just so overdone. I used to think this was just an affectation of his times...but, having more recently read other authors of the era...or slightly afterwards...I realize that isn't necessarily so.

I have this in audio ready to put in my CD player. Hmm.
I did like Haunted, which is not on the list of course, but had some really interesting social commentary.

1984 by George Orwell. Best thing I've read in a long time if not ever. Definitely deserves 6 stars!

It really was something. Though after I had to make a purge through brain candy. Left me feeling... scourged? Didn't it depress you?

message 7429: by Stephanie "Jedigal" (new)

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Diane,
Do you do other stuff while you listen? Like the dishes? It's not so very long, and its not BAD, its mildly entertaining, just - nothing to write home about. I might try Haunted to get a different taste of CP.

James,
I agree on Dead Air.

I usually listen in the car when I don't have children around. If an audiobook is really good, I will listen to it in the kitchen while I cook or do dishes. But it has to be really good. :)

I didn't feel depressed actually. I was just completely fascinated.

I've now finished I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. This one made me feel quite depressed at times.

I get that! I started reading "The White Tiger" a little while ago and coming from India, I was shocked how this man really projected the society. One, it's not as caste ridden anymore as this book shows, two, Arvind Adiga paints a deplorable, hopeless and pathetic picture of a country which is actually progressing by leaps and bounds considering it's been independent for a little more than half a century and which isn't half as bad as this man portrays it to be. I am not saying that out of blind patriotism because corruption, political problems and economic crisis are a part of India but they are only as much a part of it as they are of almost any other country in the world.Books like these paint a picture of the country in a manner that people believe all we have is snake charmers, bus drivers, slums, a blatantly corrupt political system-all of which is true to some extent but not the complete truth. Not everyone is like that. Not every part of India is like that. It's a huge country and you just can't classify it as absolutely lovely or absolutely backward at all because it's so diverse.
I never had any patience left with him when I started reading it so, I abandoned it mid-way.

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments I've just finished The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.
A classic mystery, and would have to be one of my all-time favourites.
The twists and turns in this book are amazing! I was not able to guess the ending at all!
