Ulysses by James Joyce. Review, very limited until I reread it, is at http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20... and the review of The Shining will be the next post.
Mrs. Dalloway, to which I gave 4 stars. However, I know I'll think about it longer, so I might be feeling stingy today.my review
Sophia wrote: "I just finished A Room with a View by E.M. Forster. I have finished 6 list books so far this year; I think getting a hand-me-down Kindle, allowing for easier access to the public domain list books,..."I love my kindle for that! I recently got Poisonwood Bible for a couple of dollars when it was on special.
David wrote: "The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien. Completely absurd, but I loved it."So did I David, O'Briens other book at swim two birds is even better I think.
Blood and Guts in High School by Kathy Acker. My first disappointment, it really wasn't for me and I am at a loss as to how it got on the list.
Finished Swann's Way.And I liked it more than I thought I would. It even has some humorous fragments!
City Primeval - Elmore LeonardCity Primeval
In my opinion, all Leonard's novels are good. I really enjoyed this one, but I have no idea why City Primeval or LaBrava were chosen from all his titles for the 1001 List.... Good read though!
I just finished 1984. Now I can rest peacefully when I proclaim I'm never, ever, reading Orwell again.
Just finished Edith Wharton,s The Glimpses of the Moon.I loved the book...but had wished it had gone full tilt outlandish comedy. The premise would make a great movie. Apparently only a silent one was done right after the work was published.
BTW I,m typing this in Costa Rica...and can,t find the apostrophe on the keyboard..so..substituted with commas.. LOL
After the Quake by Murakami. Short stories similar to his novel style. Still interested in this author, although not always sure why.
Gogol's The Nose. Pretty funny satire. Also Winterson's Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. Re-reading that one immediately, trying to relate the fairy-tale type side stories to the direct first-person narration.
Today I finished The Honorary Consul and really enjoyed it, am getting through Regeneration too. This could be a productive 1001 list week.
Thérèse Raquinby Émile Zola
Thérèse Raquin
Thérèse Raquin is the title of a novel (first published in 1867) and a play (first performed in 1873) by the French writer Émile Zola. The novel was originally published in serial format in the journal L'Artiste and in book format in December of the same year.
Glad I read/listened to it but it is dark and dreary.
Just finished Three Trapped Tigers by G. Cabrera Infante and I must say I hated it. So many times I wanted to just pack it in and am so glad I will never have to read it again.
The Charterhouse of Parma - StendhalThe Charterhouse of Parma
Not as distinctive as "The Read and The Black" was for me though it is quite a plot-twisting adventure story that shows Stendhal's insights into the foibles of the human heart.
Wayne wrote: "I just finished Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières. I was all ready to give it 5 stars and call it one of the best books I've ever read, but the ending let me down so badly I could on..."Iam with you Wayne, felt a bit like a cop out, cheesey, or how a made for TV film would end.
I just finished reading The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. I really enjoyed the read. It takes on an interesting perspective.
Finished The Story of Lucy Gault and reviewed it. In short, it was one of those that gets under your skin, or at least it was for me.
I just finished Hammett's The Thin Man. I love mystery/crime novels, but I felt mixed about this one.
Season of Migration to the North - Tayeh SalihSeason of Migration to the North
I liked this novel but thought perhaps it tried to tackle too many hefty themes to bring about a satisfying conclusion in such a brief work.
Finished The Thin Man - Dashiell Hammett - enjoyed it to a 3 star level only...wonder if that was because I read the three Hammett books on the list straight after each other?
Finished Wittgenstein's Mistress by Markson, intriguing read couldn't decide at first if the woman narrating the story was mad.
