I wanted to let you know that you have at least one faithful reader. I would have left a comment but for some reason now Blogspot wants some kind of account I don't have to log in. You are to be congratulated. I don't know how many times I have started Tristram Shandy without finishing.

Are you looking for other books on the List or just other books? I took a break from my serious reading, having abandoned a couple of List books as too painful, with The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection. I loved it.

This is one of my recent reads. I loved this book, though I agree with you about the despair.

I loved the book too, and it has definitely had a strong impact on me. Such humanity in it.

Wow, thank you so much, Bea. Yeah, Tristram took me about two weeks just because it was so hard to pick up!

I will check out the other book; the title is really interesting. Thanks for reading!

message 6064: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments I just finished Nancy Mitford's' Love in a Cold Climate. It was great, like a more subtle but just as funny version of Wodehouse. It was relatively slow to begin with but with the introduction of Cedric it all kicked off. A delight.

Grada (BoekenTrol) (boekentrol) | 60 comments Chess by Stefan Zweig. I liked it :-)

message 6066: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I just finished reading E.M. Forster's Howards End. It was interesting but I thought it dragged at times.

message 6067: by Kris (new)

Kris (krisrabberman) | 16 comments Just finished The Crying of Lot 49 and Woman at Point Zero a few days ago. I liked them both - especially Lot 49. I'm excited to read more Pynchon.

Alyson Of Bathe (alysonofbathe) | 20 comments I just finished Lord of the Flies, a reread for me, having read it first in high school. Much improved the second time around, it seems. Posted some thoughts here.

Teresa | 10 comments Yrinsyde wrote: "I finished reading Pippi Longstocking 2 days ago. What a fun read!"

I never have read that one! Always meant to, because a girl in one of my classes did her hair in these crazy braids with with running thru them so she could bend them in all sorts of fun ways. My mom wouldn't let me, so I was envious!

message 6070: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I've just finished Growth of the Soil, a strange book I thought. My review is here.

I would have been too, Theresa! My hair has always been too slippery for bands to stay put ...

message 6072: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments The Light of Day by Graham Swift - what a waste of time. I can't say I enjoyed anything about the book, including cover art, size of book and layout of chapters.

It really irritated me. Off to readitswapit it goes!

message 6073: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Finished Marius the Epicurean by Pater, wasn't til I started it that I found out it was about a roman living during the time of Marcus Aurelias, mentions the Golden Ass.
Also read Dispatches by Herr, one of those books which should be read by more people, do find the Vietnam war a mystery but I'm english, not a war we covered at school. Norman Conquest, English Civil War, WWII, Napoleonic and Falklands yes, only seem to concern ourselves with wars we took part in.

message 6074: by Linda (new)

Linda JF The Hunchback of Notre-Dame mostly on my Ipod, and almost finished with The Color Purple, which I can't say is enjoyable, but I've slogged through it just to say I did.

Another wonderful author I would not have come within a mile of had it not been for the 1001 books

message 6079: by Glynis (new)

Glynis (missgmad) Just finished Middlemarch by George Eliot. Really enjoyed it but found the author's narrative in between the action a bit of a drag at times. Four stars from me.

message 6081: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments Sputnik Sweetheart - which I captured out in the garden just before the swollen London sky let loose! As Ian said above, this was also a beautiful book by an author who wouldn't have been on my radar had I not started the 1001 book list.

Probably the best Dickens I have read thus far.

message 6100: by Eli (new)

Eli Adelholm (eliadelholm) Recently finished Voltaire's Candide. I don't honestly know what I had expected from this work but it certainly wasn't this - that's not to say I didn't like it though. It was a funny short little book.
