I haven't read any other book by Calvino. Invisible Cities I think is wonderful in terms of structure, since it consists in conversations between Marco Polo and Kublai Kan and short texts where Marco Polo describes cities which are imaginary but reminiscent of real cities somehow. You can just open it at random and read an individual city and enjoy it as much as if you read it linearly.
Lauli wrote: "Diane wrote: "Lauli wrote: "Just finished Invisible Cities by Calvino and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Both wonderful books."I have LOVED Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler is structured as 10 opening chapters of 10 different novels interupted with interludes of a male and female reader. So, Invisible Cities sounds similar in that it has a unique structure. I'll put it on my TBR list. Thanks
I've finished The Garden Party and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield, it was a beautiful little story.
Finished The Bell Jar last night. More fascinated by the growing pains of feminism than anything else. :)
Faces In The Water by Janet Frame. Really good. My review is at http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20...
King Solomon's Mines -Haggardand
Treasure Island -Stevenson
Both fast-paced adventure tales. I was slightly let down by the accents in Treasure Island. They were good but after reading Rob Roy by Scott, I had high expectations for coarse, pirate exhalations (much like the rich brogues found in Scott's novel).

I wasn't able to get it as a book, but found an audio book of it. It's beautiful to listen to.
I'VE FINALLY FINISHED The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights~!!This is going onto my favourites shelf, it's just sooo amazing!!
A very long story full of other stories. Within these pages you shall find; enchantments, murders, thieves, magicians, animals and rocks that are really people, mermaids, royalty, magic carpets, magic lamps, magic artifical apples..... and a hole lot more!
The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick, Less Than Zero, and High-Rise. I finished the three of these over the past week. I enjoyed Ellis the most. After the three of these, though, I almost feel like I need a bath. All of these kind of plumb the depths of depravity and insanity but if you want short reads...
Gwen wrote: "I also just finished The Sorrows of Young Werther. It probably would have affected me more if I'd read it back when I was a love-addled teenager." Yes, I agree! I would burst into tears at the end!
I just finished The Summer Book by Tove Jannson today. It is a sad but also a happy read. It is a wonderfully contemplative series of vignettes, just delightful. I had so much pleasure reading this and will reread again and again.

Mansfield is, indeed, brilliant!

Thanks for the encouragement here! I've been putting this one off..... well, all my reading life!
Have to agree with you there. It is certainly memorable. Did you enjoy the book as much as I did - I gave it 5*s?
I just finished Life and Times of Michael K and The Lover. I loved them both, for very different reasons - Michael K is such a compelling examination of resistance, while The Lover's stream of consciousness style works so well as an evocation of memory.
Yrinsyde wrote: "I just finished The Summer Book by Tove Jannson today. It is a sad but also a happy read. It is a wonderfully contemplative series of vignettes, just delightful. I had so much pleasure reading this..."I liked it very much too.
Just finished Lord of the Rings, whew! I always find it a bit difficult to read something after I've seen the film adaptation, so this was a bit of a slog for me in parts, but I mostly enjoyed it. Mind-blowing how much work and detail Tolkien put into it.
Finished Bunner Sisters, Summer, Vile Bodies and The Plot Against America(audioversion. First Phillip Roth I have read. Will be reading others
Recently finished Don DeLillo Falling Man. I feel very frustrated after reading it, I keep feeling that there are more in it that I'm just not getting.
Finished Memoirs of Hadrian - which was pretty good, though the way the author dealt with the Bar Kochba revolt annoyed me too much for a five-star review, and Gösta Berling's Saga - which was weird, and I found I didn't like it at all.
Finished The English Patient...and it seems that you either love it or hate it. I fall into the latter category, unfortunately. My review is here.
Just finished listening to the audiobook of The Age of Innocence, narrated by David Horovitch. It was my first Edith Wharton read since absolutely hating Ethan Frome in high school. I'm glad I gave her another try. This was a five-star experience.
Finished The Three Musketeers....Almost halfway through Gone with the Wind and 50 pgs in to Thier Eyes were Watching God.....Next up is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Trainspotting - wow! I haven't seen a lot of reviews by other people I know from this group on the books page but I urge you (especially the brits) to not write this one off as being too rough and ready. It offers some fantastic insights into human relationships when they are at their most fragile.http://bookbebeautiful.blogspot.co.uk/
Waiting for the Barbarians...it was hard going but beautifully written, I've turned to Wodehouse for some sweet relief
Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture: A Novel of Mathematical Obsession - engaging, even for someone who isn't a mathematician. :)
