I haven't read any other book by Calvino. Invisible Cities I think is wonderful in terms of structure, since it consists in conversations between Marco Polo and Kublai Kan and short texts where Marco Polo describes cities which are imaginary but reminiscent of real cities somehow. You can just open it at random and read an individual city and enjoy it as much as if you read it linearly.

I have LOVED Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler is structured as 10 opening chapters of 10 different novels interupted with interludes of a male and female reader. So, Invisible Cities sounds similar in that it has a unique structure. I'll put it on my TBR list. Thanks

Amanda | 191 comments Just finished The Woman in White. I thought it was Wilkie Collins' best work. I love Marian.

message 6015: by Craig (new)

Craig | 241 comments King Solomon's Mines -Haggard
and
Treasure Island -Stevenson

Both fast-paced adventure tales. I was slightly let down by the accents in Treasure Island. They were good but after reading Rob Roy by Scott, I had high expectations for coarse, pirate exhalations (much like the rich brogues found in Scott's novel).

I wasn't able to get it as a book, but found an audio book of it. It's beautiful to listen to.

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments I'VE FINALLY FINISHED The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights~!!

This is going onto my favourites shelf, it's just sooo amazing!!
A very long story full of other stories. Within these pages you shall find; enchantments, murders, thieves, magicians, animals and rocks that are really people, mermaids, royalty, magic carpets, magic lamps, magic artifical apples..... and a hole lot more!

message 6018: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick, Less Than Zero, and High-Rise. I finished the three of these over the past week. I enjoyed Ellis the most. After the three of these, though, I almost feel like I need a bath. All of these kind of plumb the depths of depravity and insanity but if you want short reads...

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I just finished The Summer Book by Tove Jannson today. It is a sad but also a happy read. It is a wonderfully contemplative series of vignettes, just delightful. I had so much pleasure reading this and will reread again and again.

message 6029: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I finished reading Pippi Longstocking 2 days ago. What a fun read!

message 6030: by Kris (new)

Kris (krisrabberman) | 16 comments I just finished Life and Times of Michael K and The Lover. I loved them both, for very different reasons - Michael K is such a compelling examination of resistance, while The Lover's stream of consciousness style works so well as an evocation of memory.

message 6034: by Tara (new)

Tara A (quartinsession) | 59 comments Just finished Lord of the Rings, whew! I always find it a bit difficult to read something after I've seen the film adaptation, so this was a bit of a slog for me in parts, but I mostly enjoyed it. Mind-blowing how much work and detail Tolkien put into it.

message 6035: by Denise (new)

Denise Finished Bunner Sisters, Summer, Vile Bodies and The Plot Against America(audioversion. First Phillip Roth I have read. Will be reading others

Christina Stind | 180 comments Recently finished Don DeLillo Falling Man. I feel very frustrated after reading it, I keep feeling that there are more in it that I'm just not getting.

message 6038: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Finished Memoirs of Hadrian - which was pretty good, though the way the author dealt with the Bar Kochba revolt annoyed me too much for a five-star review, and Gösta Berling's Saga - which was weird, and I found I didn't like it at all.

message 6039: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) The Bridge on the Drina, which I'd hoped to like more.

my review

message 6040: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 154 comments Finished The English Patient...and it seems that you either love it or hate it. I fall into the latter category, unfortunately. My review is here.

message 6041: by Bea (new)

Bea | 110 comments Just finished listening to the audiobook of The Age of Innocence, narrated by David Horovitch. It was my first Edith Wharton read since absolutely hating Ethan Frome in high school. I'm glad I gave her another try. This was a five-star experience.

message 6042: by Cam (new)

Cam | 25 comments Finished The Three Musketeers....Almost halfway through Gone with the Wind and 50 pgs in to Thier Eyes were Watching God.....

Next up is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

message 6043: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments Trainspotting - wow! I haven't seen a lot of reviews by other people I know from this group on the books page but I urge you (especially the brits) to not write this one off as being too rough and ready. It offers some fantastic insights into human relationships when they are at their most fragile.

I wanted to let you know that you have at least one faithful reader. I would have left a comment but for some reason now Blogspot wants some kind of account I don't have to log in. You are to be congratulated. I don't know how many times I have started Tristram Shandy without finishing.

Are you looking for other books on the List or just other books? I took a break from my serious reading, having abandoned a couple of List books as too painful, with The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection. I loved it.
