JF The Age of Innocence by Wharton, my fourth by her. I think it was my favorite of all the books I've read by Wharton. However, a word of warning to anyone who hasn't read anything by Wharton - not exactly one for happy ending, this one.

finished Invisible by Paul Auster... I thought it was really great in some respects and in others, not so great. I will probably read some other stuff by this author in the future.
Dbolden wrote: "was this good? It's on my bedside with the great gatsby and I don't know which one to read first!"Their Eyes Were Watching God wasn't bad, but I think my expectations might have been a little high. If you haven't read Gatsby yet, I would definitely recommend picking it up.
Just late last night finished off David Copperfield by Dickens. What a great story! Highly recommended, never boring, humorous in places, very tongue in cheek in others. Aunt Betsey Trotwood is a HOOT!!!!Getting ready to start both Schindler's List & Tropic of Capricorn
Just finished The Vicar of Wakefield. My review is up on 1001everything.blogspot.comHave fun with Animal Farm, Shea. Great story.

I'm with you. I was really disappointed by it after reading Welty's wonderful short stories
Have just completed The Sea, the Sea. While there were times that it dragged a little more than I would have liked, this was IMHO a 5* read. Iris Murdoch's ability to bring her characters to life, with all their flaws, and make us care about them is a gift.
Finished Novel with cocaine by Ageyev, a book about drug taking in Russia in the early 1900's, it was ok but it was dropped from the list in 2008.
which I only enjoyed in the parts where the author described the women Gogol was with. Other than that, IMHO I do not think it deserved an award.
Just finished the short, quite interesting, and easy to read Chocky, but must admit to being baffled as to why this book merits being on this list. Okay, I see it was deleted in 2008...but still.

Another member had mentioned her short stories. As a fan of short stories, thanks for letting me know I should look forward to them.
Just finished Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe.Well written and a really good story!!
The only thing I don't understand with other reviews of this book is that they always seem to focus on the fact that Moll was a prostitute (though not for that long, compared to others things), and the incest which was an 'accident' in that it was not known to either of the characters that they were related till much later. She should be known best for being one of the best theives in the fiction world, and for making it so long without getting caught. :)

Just finished The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek. My review is at http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20... . This is a disturbing but fascinating read. Don't try it if you are squeamish about sexuality or very disturbed families, but I found the writing brilliant.
Just completed The Midwich Cuckoos. An interesting easy read but sci-fi really isn't my genre of choice..
Just finish Memoirs of a Geisha...I gave it 1 star...
Camille wrote: "Just finish Memoirs of a Geisha...I gave it 1 star..."Yup I agree this book went nowhere, very underwhelming

It was horrible! I finished reading it only because I ALWAYS HAVE to finish reading a book...no matter how bad it is. But that is my least favorite book. Ever.

Just reread The Handmaid's Tale - absolutely adore this book! Posted some thoughts here.Cheers,
Alyson
Finished The Day of the Triffids and although sci-fi isn't my favourite genre I must admit that I really liked this book. a good read.
Mikela wrote: "Finished The Day of the Triffids and although sci-fi isn't my favourite genre I must admit that I really liked this book. a good read."I remember the movie...I want to read the book...
I finished In Search of Lost Time: The Prisoner and the Fugitive: Prisoner and the Fugitive v. 5 late last night. Five volumes down, one to go until I can check this behemoth off the list! :)

Didn't realize there was a movie - would like to see how they handle it...off to the movie store.
The Secret History - I jumped on the bandwagon later than most but loved it all the same. Then just jumped through Eros, Unbound.

I am sure the '60s movie is very campy by today's standards, but I heard the BBC series was quite good.
Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust by Nathanael WestThese novellas are timeless, intense American classics. I highly recommend them.
I've finished Hunger by Knut Hamsun.Done. I didn't like this book, the writting may have been good, but this is really not my sort of story.
Finished The Lover. Like her other list book The Ravishing of Lol Stein I like and dislike it at the same time.
I just finished DeLillo`s White Noise and, although it was a good read, I liked Cosmopolis better. And that`s not even a list book. I like is writing style, it`s very `now`.
I just finished Women In Love, by DH Lawrence. Definitely didn't like it NEARLY as much as I like Lady Chatterley's Lover. Trying Sons & Lovers now, we'll see how that one goes...
The Count of Monte Cristo -DumasI read the unabridged version and it even though it was long (about 1200 pages), I was enchanted throughout. It is hard to pick a favorite Dumas work so, this one ties with The Three Musketeers.
Genia wrote: "Started today: Memoirs of Hadrian and Things Fall Apart: A Novel. Both are pretty good so far."And finished. Both quite good books.
Lauli wrote: "Just finished Invisible Cities by Calvino and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Both wonderful books."I have LOVED Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler how does Invisible Cities compare style, structure and overall enjoyment wise?
