Linda JF The Age of Innocence by Wharton, my fourth by her. I think it was my favorite of all the books I've read by Wharton. However, a word of warning to anyone who hasn't read anything by Wharton - not exactly one for happy ending, this one.

Monica (ritabook) | 10 comments finished Invisible by Paul Auster... I thought it was really great in some respects and in others, not so great. I will probably read some other stuff by this author in the future.

Lauli | 263 comments Mountolive, which means I'm only one book away from finally finishing the Alexandria Quartet!

Charity (charityross) Dbolden wrote: "was this good? It's on my bedside with the great gatsby and I don't know which one to read first!"

Their Eyes Were Watching God wasn't bad, but I think my expectations might have been a little high. If you haven't read Gatsby yet, I would definitely recommend picking it up.

message 5955: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Finished reading Hunger by Knut Hamsun yesterday. Definitely made my faves list. Wow.

message 5956: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments Just late last night finished off David Copperfield by Dickens. What a great story! Highly recommended, never boring, humorous in places, very tongue in cheek in others. Aunt Betsey Trotwood is a HOOT!!!!

Getting ready to start both Schindler's List & Tropic of Capricorn

Shea | 9 comments Just completed All Quiet on the Western Front. Planning to start Animal Farm this month.

Have fun with Animal Farm, Shea. Great story.

I'm with you. I was really disappointed by it after reading Welty's wonderful short stories

message 5961: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Have just completed The Sea, the Sea. While there were times that it dragged a little more than I would have liked, this was IMHO a 5* read. Iris Murdoch's ability to bring her characters to life, with all their flaws, and make us care about them is a gift.

message 5962: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished The Old Man and the Sea and absolutely loved it.

message 5963: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Finished Novel with cocaine by Ageyev, a book about drug taking in Russia in the early 1900's, it was ok but it was dropped from the list in 2008.

message 5964: by Duygu (new)

Duygu | 17 comments The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
which I only enjoyed in the parts where the author described the women Gogol was with. Other than that, IMHO I do not think it deserved an award.

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished the short, quite interesting, and easy to read Chocky, but must admit to being baffled as to why this book merits being on this list. Okay, I see it was deleted in 2008...but still.

Another member had mentioned her short stories. As a fan of short stories, thanks for letting me know I should look forward to them.

message 5967: by Rachel (Sfogs) (last edited Mar 19, 2012 03:28PM) (new)

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments Just finished Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe.
Well written and a really good story!!
The only thing I don't understand with other reviews of this book is that they always seem to focus on the fact that Moll was a prostitute (though not for that long, compared to others things), and the incest which was an 'accident' in that it was not known to either of the characters that they were related till much later. She should be known best for being one of the best theives in the fiction world, and for making it so long without getting caught. :)

message 5969: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce Finished Tess of the D'Urbervilles? Quite the enjoyable read!

message 5970: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 162 comments Just finished The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek. My review is at http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20... . This is a disturbing but fascinating read. Don't try it if you are squeamish about sexuality or very disturbed families, but I found the writing brilliant.

Mikela | 378 comments Just completed The Midwich Cuckoos. An interesting easy read but sci-fi really isn't my genre of choice..

It was horrible! I finished reading it only because I ALWAYS HAVE to finish reading a book...no matter how bad it is. But that is my least favorite book. Ever.

I am sure the '60s movie is very campy by today's standards, but I heard the BBC series was quite good.

These novellas are timeless, intense American classics. I highly recommend them.

Sandi | 227 comments Finished The Lover. Like her other list book The Ravishing of Lol Stein I like and dislike it at the same time.

message 5992: by Corina (new)

Corina Romonti (paleview) | 21 comments I just finished DeLillo`s White Noise and, although it was a good read, I liked Cosmopolis better. And that`s not even a list book. I like is writing style, it`s very `now`.

message 5993: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments I just finished Women In Love, by DH Lawrence. Definitely didn't like it NEARLY as much as I like Lady Chatterley's Lover. Trying Sons & Lovers now, we'll see how that one goes...

message 5994: by Craig (last edited Mar 28, 2012 02:47PM) (new)

Craig | 241 comments The Count of Monte Cristo -Dumas
I read the unabridged version and it even though it was long (about 1200 pages), I was enchanted throughout. It is hard to pick a favorite Dumas work so, this one ties with The Three Musketeers.

message 5995: by Genia (new)

I have LOVED Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler how does Invisible Cities compare style, structure and overall enjoyment wise?
