Finished The Tree of Man by White, interesting for the sense it gives of what it was like living in a rural community in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century.

I've just read Frankenstein, Dracula and latest Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde - all three books one thinks to know, but actually reading them is quite a surprise. Of the three I liked Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde best - it's short and can be read within two hours and maybe it's exactly this preciseness which shows the great gift of the the author and keeps the reader interested. Both of the other books were meaningful and very important for their epoch, but for a modern reader they sometimes dragged. I'm looking forward to seeing some movie versions of the three to compare...

Lord of the Flies

I have read it before, but I have found that the
re-reading of many books is a good thing when you are older, it adds a flavor that wasn't there when you (I) were younger without so much "under your belt" as my great-greatgrandfather used to say.

Yes, Of Mice and Men is sad, but by far one of my favorites and I have read it many many times. Such a powerful book.

Maybe you get it through inter-library loan from somewhere nearby.

Finished Manon des Sources by Pagnol which was a great book, didn't want to put it down at work but the surgeon insisted.
Also finished The Story of O by Reage, didn't find it erotic at all, possibly you need to be either sadistic or masochistic.

Also, www.alibris.com is a great place for finding out of print books at reasonable prices. I have yet to be disappointed in the stated quality of used books and their many sellers often have new books. Mostly US, but I've seen listings from sellers in other countries.

@Stephanie: There were some really tedious sections covering the history of Waterloo, etc. I "read" it via audio, so I was maybe jogging or cooking while listening to some of those sections and "got through it" while having other distractions. During the story narrative parts I listened more intently.

I was tempted to read an abridged version, but a reviewer somewhere warned against it, commenting that Les Mis. is more than just "Jean Valjean goes to Paris," so I resisted.

I read Monte Cristo in about half the time it took for Les Mis. I loved them both, but The Count is just so much fun. Lots of characters to remember, but it builds and builds the excitement till you can't put it down. No long digressions like Les Mis either.

I actually downloaded it on audio through Audible.com. It's a fun one to listen to on audio - funny, and hearing it done right in an English accent really adds to the fun. Good luck!

I added it to my list of potential reads based on ratings from my friends which were 4 and 5 stars. I have no idea how soon I'll get to it though.

Count another five-star fan. I'm wondering if your version had a poor translation. It's been a long, long time since I read it but I remember loving it. I much preferred it to The Stranger.

I got only half way through that a few years ago. I thought I'd laid it aside because I got busy with other things. Maybe it was just boring. But I think the prose, the language itself, was beautiful, just that I couldn't get with the story itself.

I'm with you, I did not like The Plague and not because of a bad translation. I found it to be long, boring, and an over worked somewhat obvious metaphor.

However, I did like The Stranger.

Linda, I just about LIVE at the library! I always have a stack of library books in my bedroom to choose from(all from the list these days, LOL) and they will happily send out for books for me that aren't on their shelves or in the county system.

I just finished In Cold Blood yesterday. It was fantastic. Chilling, sad, well written, easily readable. I found myself feeling a bit of a "pang" when Capote described the actual executions, but I think that's because I guess I felt that they got a bit of a raw deal & should have at least gotten the full psych eval the defense asked for instead of just the yes or no were they sane or not that they got. I am all for capital punishment, don't get me wrong, but in some cases, no.
