Elizabeth Risley (ElizabethRisley) | 8 comments hello,
My name is Elizabeth and I'm new to the group and Goodreads. Just learned about it through twitter when I heard one of my favorite authors was in a Q&A here -Michael Sullivan. He wrote a fantastic seires called the Riyria Revelations - and I'm dying to know what happens in the final book. This site looks really cool and I hope to explore it more.

Ruth Madison (ruthmadison) | 15 comments Hello! I'm Ruth and I'm an indie author. I write books and short stories for a very particular niche. It's a small audience, but a loyal one, and one that is starved for material.

So far I have one novel, (W)hole, published. I have a collection of short stories, Dev Dreams, and I have a couple short stories available for free on a couple different websites.

This looks like a great group, very active, and with lots of posts that look interesting and relevant to me!

Hello there, all. Writer. Reader. Unpublished. Working, striving, rewriting, trying to avoid the empty but very desperately attractive notion of self-publication. Classicist. Formalist. Lover of Tolkien. Inspired as a writer by Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gogol, Pushkin, Virgil, Homer, Donne, Milton, Melville, Miller, Austen, Wharton, Hugo, Bernard Shaw, Anouilh, Chaucer, Wilde, and just a sprig of Joyce (and many more I have neglected). Top five books? Macbeth, Anna Karenina, The Book of Job, The Æneid, The Lord of the Rings sounds OK. Perhaps not true, but very representative of me.

I like your top five and your list of authors. I'm going to read Ulysses by Joyce this winter. How did you find it?

Jessa Callaver (jessa_callaver) | 16 comments Hi all,
I'm a new member (of both the site and the group, of course), book fanatic and newly published e-author. Happy to be at GR and glad to be apart of the group. I looked forward to getting to know everyone. =]

message 215: by [deleted user] (new)

I read Ulysses in one month exactly on a bet the first time I read it. It's fun, kooky, and almost completely meaningless. The fine print on the words Classicist and Formalist is 'I am not a [Post]Modernist. I love the early Joyce because he hadn't quite perfected his incoherent theories of writing; but Ulysses is dense, thick, and means just about anything you want it to; Finnegans Wake may yet be the worst, most meaningless work of literature ever created (except maybe a Stein-poem). Sounds pretty harsh for one of my favourite authors, eh? Give Leopold Bloom a try: it is an important novel, but I would stick with Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man if I were you.

I have read Dubliners and Portrait, am on to Ulysses as a challenge. I fear the pointlessness and even have a study guide to go with it. Yep, I'm that nerdy. I feel this book is a rite of passage but why and into what, I don't know.

message 218: by [deleted user] (new)

If you are at all interested in discussing Modern and modern literature seriously, Ulysses is in the top five to know.

Daniela Reyes (danielareyes) | 1 comments Hi Everyone! I'm Daniela Reyes, I'm from Mexico and I love to read and write. I especially like to read historic novels and romantic fiction.

I've always loved to write, since I was a little girl, but I've been writing more formally and attending writing workshops for 3 or 4 years now. I've written a short novel in English and now I'm starting to write one in Spanish.

I'm looking forward to joining the group and sharing my thoughts with other people who like to write too!

Jeanine (truejourney) | 12 comments Hey everyone :) My name is Jeanine. I've written one book and I am in the "Do I really want to try and Publish This?" stage. I am not sure about everyone else, but I almost feel like my first book has taught me a lot about writing in general, but may not be publishing material.
I am really excited that I found this group. I have been searching for a group like this for the last few weeks or so. I want to be an author. I LOVE writing!
Thanks for allowing me to join your group :)

Frank Acland (frankacland) | 9 comments Hi, Jeanine.

Do YOU like the book? If you weren't the author would this be a book you'd enjoy reading?

I know it's kind of hard to be objective about one's own work, but if you can answer yes to that question honestly, I would say that you have every reason to think it would be publishable.

Best regards,

Frank

I do like the book and I definitely would read it if I were not the author. But... I think I could do better and I am not sure if I want to the first book that I've written out there, making my name for me, if you know what I mean. We will see though. Anne is currently reading it and I am waiting on her feedback before I go ahead and start the editing process and all that :)
