Hello, Christine and welcome to the group. Be sure to add your book to the bookshelf and the Books folder. It looks very interesting.

Stacy Green (stacygreen) | 9 comments Hi Lexi!
With the same book? How can I self-publish a book I'm querying? Or do you mean a second, lol? I don't have another one ready. I'm plotting it out, though.

message 158: by Lexi (new)

Lexi Revellian (lexirevellian) | 43 comments E-publish on Amazon for Kindle, and query at the same time. If you get good sales, you can mention them to the agent as proof there's a readership for your novel.

Thanks, Amy. And Hi Paul!

For the record, St Martins Press picked up Amanda Hocking's entire backlist - if a book has good sales, they'll see that as showing its potential. If it has low sales they'll see that it could still be considered 'new'. It's not a dealbreaker, by any means...

Nettle | 1 comments Hello Everyone, I'm Kate Lyons from Melbourne, Australia. I'm mostly a reader, however over the past few years I haven't been able to stop thinking about and idea of a character that seems to have stepped into my mind from nowhere. Recently I have started to consider writing her story simply to get her to move out of my brain, however having never written anything of that length I have no idea where to start. I was hoping to gain some insight here. When I'm reading I love fantasy; especially urban fantasy, mysteries and thrillers.

I'd say the movie adaptations of Jack Higgins didn't work because they probably didn't have the best scripts and at least in one case badly miscast.

Good to know. I'd forgotten they picked up her back list. I've just had it ingrained in my head that once your book is available online in any form, a publisher won't touch it. Just another example of how the publishing world is changing.

I have to say ... I keep telling myself I need to go through the query process for at least the experience, but after reading some of the incomes for the self-publishing 'midlist' authors, it's hard to stick to that.

Hi, Paul. Thanks for all your information. I've not been published, and I'm in the editing stages of the novel I've been planning to query. But at this point I'm trying to decide which is the better option. I'm working on social media, being active on Twitter and my blog (http://stacygreenauthor.blogspot.com/) and sometimes it seems my efforts would be better spent going the self-publishing route.

I've been there!! Don't worry too much about the length. Just write the story and see how long it goes. Traditional publishing have fairly stern guidelines about length, but self-publishing not so much. Worry about the length later. For now, just write :)

LOL, thanks Paul. Do you think it's too dark? I try to talk about different things, but I keep Thursdays for thrillers since that's my basic genre.

I'll definitely check out your web site!

message 176: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 63 comments Hello everyone,
As I'm going to be on the Q&A hotseat coming up I thought I would take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Michael and I've written a six-book fantasy series (The Riyria Revelations which consists of the following 5 released books):

The Crown Conspiracy (The Riyria Revelations, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan Avempartha (The Riyria Revelations, #2) by Michael J. Sullivan Nyphron Rising (The Riyria Revelations, #3) by Michael J. Sullivan The Emerald Storm (The Riyria Revelations, #4) by Michael J. Sullivan Wintertide (The Riyria Revelations, #5) by Michael J. Sullivan

The series was recently picked up by Orbit books and will be re-released as 3 books:

Theft of Swords (Riyria Revelations) by Michael J. Sullivan Rise of Empire by Michael J. Sullivan Heir of Novron (Riyria Revelations) by Michael J. Sullivan

The only book that's not "out there" is the final Percepliquis which will be in Heir of Novron and also released as a stand alone.

I've been pubished in just about everyway you can be (small press, self, and now through a big-six) I also have a number of foreign sales (Germany, Russia, Spain, France, Czech Republic) so I can answer any questions on those types of things if you are interested. I'm looking forward to talking to you'all next week.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 4 comments Hello all,
I got an invite to this group because my husband is going to be on the Q&A in a few days. My name is Robin and I run a small press called Ridan Publishing. We specialize in speculative fiction and have some great authors with us including: Marshall Thomas (Soldier of the Legion Series), Nathan Lowell (Trader Tales of the Solar Clipper, Leslie Ann Moore (Griffin's Daughter Trilogy), and Todd Fonsecca (Time Cavern). We also recently signed sci-fi legend Joe Haldeman to produce his classic The Forever War. I'm glad to be part of the group.

Yay - Thank you!! I love screenwriting - the medium really makes you focus on the story!

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

Anne-Mhairi - I feel the same way. It's very focused and structured and so incredibly visual. Screenwriting makes me happy, and horribly frustrated!

message 189: by Mhairi (new)

Mhairi Simpson (mhairisimpson) | 142 comments Libby - YES! Exactly that. Every word really does count. Screenwriting has helped my prose writing, I think.

message 190: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel that it's like poetry in that regard, your word choices have to be so carefully picked. Everything has to create a mood.

message 191: by Mhairi (new)

Mhairi Simpson (mhairisimpson) | 142 comments Yes, I find myself considering dialogue so much more carefully than when I write prose. Which makes me wonder if my prose dialogue needs work... Edits...

I've found writing drabbles (100 word stories) does they same thing to improve my prose. Maybe I should try screenwriting.

message 193: by [deleted user] (new)

AF - I've been doing flash fiction just recently. I find it allows me to experiment where I'd be timid in longer pieces. Are you finding the same?

message 194: by A.F. (new)

A.F. (scribe77) | 1784 comments Mod
Libby, I can't say I've ever felt timid while writing in any length, but I do like flash ficton because I can write quick stories and get the ideas down. And later I can expand the characters and ideas into longer stories or a book if I want.

message 195: by Mhairi (new)

Mhairi Simpson (mhairisimpson) | 142 comments Libby wrote: "AF - I've been doing flash fiction just recently. I find it allows me to experiment where I'd be timid in longer pieces. Are you finding the same?"

I tend to write much tighter in flash than I do in longer works. And I am happy to explore ideas I might not want to write a whole book about. On the other hand, some of my flashes are really popular and people want to see the story continued. They're good for developing ideas I might not otherwise have had.

Trying to fit evrything in for Twitter does take some imagination.

I used do Twitter Fiction, putting a whole story in one sentence.

message 200: by [deleted user] (new)

I've done a Twitter blurb before, it is very difficult. I haven't tried Twitfic yet but imagine it takes some concentration and focus.
