Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments It's amazing how fast this group seems to be growing, I wish I had more time to spend here but there's only 24 hours in the day and I spend most of them working on my novels :)

Welcome to the newcomers :) Good to see lots of Bris Vegas people here. I loooove South East Queensland

message 406: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Hello Perth people! Love Perth! Hello English person! Love England...all those castles. Pity about the weather! I love southeast Queensland too, especially Lamington National Park...the walk to Morans Falls.

ink_and_pages_ | 1 comments Hello everyone,
I'm Lauren. I'm from Victoria & I'm addicted to reading! I feel very lucky to have grown up surrounded by books and was always encouraged to read. I love fantasy with Sara Douglass, Fiona McIntosh, Peter V Brett & George RR Martin as absolute favs!
I love the goodreads site and was totally excited to find an aussie group, thanks for the invite, Mandy!

message 408: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (ribbonista) | 2 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Leigh, a work-at-home mother of 3 kids, 7, 4 & 6 months. I confess to being an e-book book-a-holic. It is my one true indulgence in life as it lets me escape away from my life for a little while. As my husband is away a lot with his job in the Australian Defence Force, online reading groups and e-books are a great way for me to keep in touch with friends and family from all over the world.

My family and I are currently in marvellous Melbourne and are active members of our local library as well. My current favourite Aussie author is PD Martin. I love the Goodreads site and was delighted to find an Aussie group, thanks for the invite, Mandy!

Look forward to finding more great reads with you all.
Leigh

Great to have you aboard Leigh, welcome.

message 410: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Wow! Three more Victorians! I'm originally from Melbourne and it's another of my favourite places! I'm going there on Tuesday. Shopping! Art Gallery! And on the weekend the Sing Australia national gathering with people coming from all over Australia. And time to say hello to many cousins. It's gonna be a busy week!

message 411: by Julie (new)

Julie Pech | 1 comments My name is Julie Pech, author of "The Chocolate Therapist: A User's Guide to the Extraordinary Health Benefits of Chocolate." I'm just getting started with Goodreads and planning to start an author discussion group on the health benefits of chocolate as well as how to pair chocolate and wine (both topics included in my new book!). I joined this group because last year while cruising in Australia teaching classes about chocolate & wine on board, I discovered that Aussie's are undoubtedly the world's greatest chocolate lovers! Hope to connect with some fellow chocolate lovers--purveyors of excellence, of course!

message 412: by [deleted user] (new)

Now that Julie sounds like the type of book quite a few of us here would enjoy. :) Welcome to the group.

message 413: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Huntman (gezza) | 75 comments Gday.

My name is Gerry and I live in Melbourne with my wife and 5 year old daughter. My day job is an IT Managing Consultant, and at night I am a writer, editor, and co-own a small press publisher based in the US (the other owners are in Missouri, New Jersey and England).

I mainly writer speculative fiction, and only recently took it seriously enough to try to get published. I have published about 10 short stories over the last 10 months in various magazines, ezines and anthologies. My Young Adult novel, Guardian of the Sky Realms, is being published in about a month.

This looks like a really good group, so well done for forming it.

Murray Gunn (murraygunn) | 211 comments Julie wrote: "last year while cruising in Australia teaching classes about chocolate & wine on board, I discovered that Aussie's are undoubtedly the world's greatest chocolate lovers!"

How can that be true? The chocolate we get here is terrible! OK, so we've started importing some of the decent stuff from Europe, but that's a relatively new thing, isn't it?

I must admit that I had no understanding of why people liked chocolate until I lived in Belgium. My French ex had no understanding of how I could dislike chocolate until she came to Australia.

message 415: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) My name is Trish. I live in Boston, & work as a bookseller. I lived in Asutralia & NZ for years a while ago, but I used to visit quite often. I have favorite authors who are Australian: Peter Carey, Geraldine Brooks, Tim Winton, Nam Le, Kate Grenville, among others, and I'm always interested to hear what's new there and what you're interested in reading.

message 416: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Huntman (gezza) | 75 comments Gday Trish. Honorary Australian!

message 417: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Murray, I don't know about you, but I've been eating Lindt, Orange Intense (Swiss) for at least ten years, and I'm sure those Belgian seashell chocolates have been around for much longer than that...though I'm not sure how long. Julie's book sounds like the perfect Christmas gift...I had to eat two squares of chocolate straight after reading about the book! The Chocolate Therapist The Chocolate Therapist by Julie Pech

I was out of Australia from 98. Before that, I only ever saw Cadbury frequently. The most classy anyone I knew got was After Dinner Mints. Perhaps it's just the circles I move in...

I remember those After dinner mints! LOL. They were the pinnacle of dinner party entertaining in the 80's in Australia. As well as a glass of Tawny Port.

Hello, and thanks for the invitation Mandy. I'm from Brisbane too. I'm a newbie author with an ebook just out (a paranormal erotic romance called Land of A Thousand Dances http://www.logical-lust.com/thousandd...) and I love to read and discuss books and I look forward to joining in the discussions here.

Hey Evelyn welcome to the group. We have just started the ball rolling with a couple of book discussions. It's very early days so jump in when you are ready.

Mandapanda Carmel wrote: "Are you thinking of the square one's that had their own little pocket Mandy?..."

Yes that's them. I was only a new young wife back then and fondue sets and After Dinner Mints were THE thing to serve.:D

message 423: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Huntman (gezza) | 75 comments I think they only pop up in Chinese Restaurants now...

message 424: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a couple of friends who still bring out those chocolate mints at dinner parties. ::cringe::

I also have a fondue set I was given for an engagement present. I have used it once for a caramel sauce to dip fruit. I wonder where it is now?

OMG!!! What an awesome book!!!

My all time favourite is Lindt milk chocolate with the soft center. When they melt in my mouth I swear I could just pass out from joy and I don't have to struggle to break them into cubes coz they come already separate =-p

At the moment I also really like Club's dark chocolate with peppermint centers. From the current discussion about the link between after dinner mints and the 80's, considering I was born in the 80's, in a weird way it makes sense =-p

Will wrote: "We are going to be visiting perth! It is where my dad grew up, so it will be intresting seeing his home town."

OMG!!! My fiance is from Perth and I visited it for the first time about 2 years ago. If you're going you have to try a pie from Jester's pies (undoubtedly the best pies in the universe!!!). Also get fish and chips from a place called Cicerello's in Fremantle harbour. They have this really cool fish aquarium that massive that you have to check out. I going to Perth again next year :-) Love it!!!

message 439: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 114 comments Welcome, Will. Perth is a beautiful city. I hail from the west, but haven't been there in many years.

Welcome, too, GSGS. Hmm, that's a tough one to pronounce. I'm thinking Russian? Just kidding.

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy Hi Mandy,

I have been a member of Goodreads for a while but only just noticed this group. I am from Melbourne and look forward to chatting to all of you.

My name is Mary and I'm from Melbourne, I joined in September. Hope to chat to you all some stage. My friend Sharon alerted me to this link.

Cheers

message 444: by [deleted user] (new)

The more the merrier Mary, hopefully you won't find it too hard to find something to chat about. Welcome. :D

message 445: by Mary (new)

Mary Thank you Gail, hey I like the pun. He he!

Thanks for the welcoming Carmel.

We can make jokes and you guys will get it. Yeah!

message 446: by Lmg633 (new)

Lmg633 Hi, I just wandered into this group and thought I'd join. I'm just getting into reading again after having baby brain being pregnant and suffering sleep deprivation and therefore not being able to see the small print of a book!

I'm currently in Sydney and I read before I go to bed. I was mainly reading romantic fluff as it was easy to read whilst I had no brain, but I am starting to get into more interesting and challenging reading (it wouldn't take much after what I've been reading!). I'll admit I am not much good at analysing the depth of a book etc. I either like it or I don't, but I am interested in reading about how others analyse books. I joined as I would like more of an effort to read more Aussie books.

message 447: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Carmel wrote: "Now, Hostess's of the Mostest, how many brownie points do I get for that intro:)..."

Wow what a great welcome Carmel!!:DD

Hi Lmg633! Hope you enjoy looking aroud the group discussions and find some good books to add to your 'to read' pile!:)

message 448: by Mary (new)

Mary Hi LMG633,

Welcome! Just because your on this site you shouldn't feel the pressure of being a highly read analytical person, I don't think that is what it is about. Some of us have stressful jobs and the PNR (Paranormal Romance) takes us away from the daily pressures of our jobs & family life. Intelligence comes in different forms and not just in academia. Trust me! I work with Academics and as highly intelligent as they are in their fields they are not experts in all aspects of life. I always say the hardest job in life is being a mum.

Cheers
