Micah Gardner (butterflygreen) | 5 comments Hi Everyone! I'm Micah and I am excited to read books by and recommended from readers and authors from Australia! Is there a great book anyone is reading right now? I love pretty much all genres and I write mainly historical and adventure inspired YA and NA.

Chantel (chloki88) | 5 comments Hello everyone! My name is Chantel I'm from Mackay, QLD (although originally from Coolah in NSW if that means anything to anyone). I've been a GR member for aaages but I haven't been able to find this group until now. It's pretty exciting finally seeing so many other aussies on here. I'm a 24yr old university student and I read anything and everything as long as it isn't too heavy on the romance. I especially enjoy historical fiction, biographies, classics, non-fiction and most importantly ... fantasy! I'm pretty nerdy actually.

message 4081: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Cobcroft | 58 comments Hi Chantel. I know Mackay well, and have been through Coolah a few times also. Welcome.

I also love historical fiction and biographies. Not so keen on fantasy. Anything that gives me an insight into the past, foreign cultures, and/or how others cope with the challenges of life intrigues me.

message 4082: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Also to all our newbies, we are running a few reading challenges at the moment. You are more than welcome to join in at any time :)

OMG! It's not very often you find someone who has been to Coolah so forgive my excitement =D

message 4084: by Louise (new)

Louise Wilson (louisewilsonauthor) | 4 comments Hi Chantel - I drive Melbourne/Sydney return almost every month so Coolah is very familiar. The Hume Highway bypasses that tiny town now, but several years back I was stopped at Coolah by the random breath test police patrol. It so happened that 'Walk the Line' by Johnny Cash was playing at full volume on the car radio. This made the cop very happy.

message 4085: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Cobcroft | 58 comments Husband's family lived in Nyngan. I come from Armidale. We lived in Wagga for a time and we travel to Melbourne regularly - always via a different country route so we see as much of the country as possible. Next to reading, caravan travel through rural Australia is my favorite way to spend time. I look for the least traveled routes and most out of the way places.
Took American son-in-law to Melbourne via Dunedoo (which is close to Coolah). Three years later he's still exclaiming that he can't believe Aussie's give towns names like that! I'm exclaiming that it must be the blow-fly capital of the world. They near carried our caravan away! Coolah wasn't far behind as I recall.

Haha you are absolutely right about the blow-flies. Although I think Dubbo would have to be the worst. I actually went to uni at Armidale so I know that place very well. Thanks for all the commentary about Coolah guys. I feel at home here already!

Louise - That is a LOT of traveling you're doing. Also, I think Johnny Cash would make anybody happy.

message 4087: by Louise (new)

Louise Wilson (louisewilsonauthor) | 4 comments Oops. Sorry. Coolah, NSW. Coolac, NSW. Two different places. I know, because I once lived in Dubbo for 2 years. That's what comes from rushing and not reading properly. It's Coolac which is on the Hume, near Gundagai. And yes, I am doing a great deal of driving these days!

message 4091: by Joz (new)

Joz Hunter | 7 comments Hi all!
Just signed up to this group and looking forward to being part of it.

Living in the northern suburbs of Melbs, currently as a 'workforce planner', fancy way of saying I'm an office chick who sends techs to jobs.

Haven't sat down to a good (full) book for quite a while, lately getting into short stories, as I get all consumed by novels. But just started The Slap.

Most of the time I like books that make me think whilst being interesting too, particularly about society, its relationships, structures and its politics, either hypothetically or realistically. Therefore one of my favourite genres is post-apocalypts.

Always fancied that I have a book in me, but have never actually taken pen to paper... one day...

message 4096: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephanieeee) | 3 comments Hi, I just joined this group mere minutes ago :D

I'm Stephanie and I hail from cold, wet "four seasons in one day" Melbourne :D I'm 18, and I'm in my final year of high school - I can't wait until VCE is over! I'm hoping to study commerce or law (or both!) at university next year but right now, I'm just gritting my teeth, hoping for year 12 to end.

I'm an avid reader and I'm looking forward to discussing books and stuff with you guys! I favour contemporary young adult romance, though I do enjoy a good dystopian or fantasy novel if it's very well written. Plus, I'm also a sucker for historical fiction :P

message 4099: by Demelza (new)

Demelza Carlton (demelzacarlton) | 27 comments Hi all

I'm Demelza Carlton, recently published author of the first two books in the Ocean's Gift series about mermaids in modern Western Australia.

I usually read very quietly and don't review, but after publishing my own work I've realised the value of my own reviews to others, when I honestly didn't think anyone cared what I thought of a book. Yes, yes, I know I was naive.

I live in Perth, WA, so most of my books tend to be set in WA if not Perth itself.

I have a thing for the ocean, for one of my ancestors was responsible for one of the Dutch shipwrecks off the WA coast in the 1600s (oops!), so I'm always in or near the water.

Welcome Demelza, lovely to have you with us:) If you'd like to head over to the Author section http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_... you can make your own thread (new topic, top right hand corner) to promote your books. That way we can all check them out, and follow your progress as you update us about it them:)
