message 3868: by Rappelle (new)

Rappelle | 9 comments Greetings all! Although I'm actually Canadian, I live in Melbourne now (since 2007, phew time flies!). I have my uncle and his family here, so my father moved us to be closer to family.

Hilarity ensues when I hear "thongs" because as a North American I imagine something....quite different. xD
But after a few years here I now picture sandals instead of G-strings. PROGRESS!

Hmmm, what else now? I've studied Professional Writing and Editing for two years (TAFE). Currently I'm in my fourth year of Psychology.

message 3872: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments Welcome Rappelle. Ah yes, some of the terms between countries are very different in meaning!I found that the other day reading a book and they talked about flatware. Oh you mean cutlery I thought, as I read the clue about spoons.I'd seen the term flatware once before and didn't have a clue.

Rappelle | 9 comments Thanks, everyone, for all the pleasant greetings! :)

Dale: Oh yes, that one gets me sometimes too because I've always just used the term 'cutlery', or 'silverware'. Actually now that I think about it, I rarely run into the term flatware (in novels). : o

Hey, I'm Clyde, a historical fiction writer who lives in Melbourne. At the moment I have no friends here on Goodreads...please friend me *blatant begging which may or may not be accompanied by the gift of chocolate* LOL

Welcome Clyde! Lovely to have you with us:) Have a look here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... then head on over to the author section and have a browse there http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

You can make your own thread to promote your work, and ask to be added to our Aussie author list:) Any questions, please feel free to ask.

Jack Tate (jack_tate) | 1 comments G'day Everyone, My name is Jack.. (I always feel like I'm at an AA meeting when I start like that. I really need to find a better way to introduce myself :))

I've been hunting around for a while now to find out what other Aussie's are reading. This looks like the perfect group.

Anyways, I live on the outskirts of Sydney, I write stuff, love golf and fishing and, more than anything, I love to read. So shoot some suggestions my way.

Take care,
Jack T.

message 3880: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2 comments My name is Sarah Richmond. I love historical fiction and historical romances. I am a fan of Nevil Shute and 'A Town Like Alice'.
Just finished Ken Follett's 'Fall of Giants' which is about WWI. The characterizations are very strong and the period detail exceptional. Also I love Jacqueline Winspear and her heroine Maizie Dobbs.
Looking forward to broadening my horizons and reading choices by belonging to this group.
I must confess I don't know many Australian writers except those who write romances.
Thanks for letting me be part of your group.

message 3884: by L.M. (new)

L.M. May (ellem_lmmay) Hi my name is Ellem and I am so glad to have found this group. I am fairly new to goodreads so still tend to get a bit lost but it would be great to have a 'home' group to pop in and visit when I get a chance!

I live on the central coast, and I love to read and write. I also enjoy reviewing books and look forward to taking a look at your list of Australian recommendations as I would like to start a blog about the Australian books I read, specifically Indie books as I would love to discover and promote new Australian writing talent, especially considering how much us Aussies are charged for ebooks compared to other countries. Not to mention how hard it is for Australian writers to get published with our limited market. I have already come across a few great Australian writers who have gone indie and am curious as to how many more exciting books are out there that we haven't discovered yet.

Nice to 'meet' you. Ellem :)

Thanks for the warm welcome :) I have already checked out the thread and added my own faves! Amazing how hard it is to think of them on the spot though. I look forward to chatting to you and others. I still haven't fully explored this group yet, but do you ever do group reads? I've always wanted to try this - the idea of reading a book at the same time as others is wonderful. My son and I do it all the time, but being an adult, I have a slightly larger range in book interests than he does lol
