C.A. Hocking (cahocking) Hello! I'm Carole and an avid reader when I'm not writing. I write under C. A. HOCKING, currently two books published and doing well, but as a lover of books, I wanted to join this group. I was born in Adelaide but have lived all over the place, currently with my husband in Canberra. This is a great place to live but not my natural habitat. I'm a tropical bird by nature and loved my years living in Cairns, but Hubby is Scottish born and can't cope with heat and humidity, so Canberra it is. I've just finished reading JB Rowley's book "Whisper My Secret" and gave it a 5 star review. It's a heartbreaking, beautifully written story and moved me deeply. We have a lot of talent in this country! I'm taking a break from reading while I finish my next novel. I find reading and writing at the same time very hard to do. When I've finished the current draft, I'll take a break and get into a couple of books I've downloaded on my Kindle, then resume the next draft. I don't know how other writers work, but that is how it works for me. I read mostly autobiographies, but have downloaded the "Song Of Fire And Ice" series after seeing the first series on Fox, and yesterday downloaded "Fifty Shades Of Grey" just to see what all the fuss is about! I've heard varying opinions about it, not all good, but it certainly is being marketed heavily at present. And at $9.09 it is certainly the most expensive ebook I've bought so far! I'll chalk it up to research if I don't like it. Hhmm, I wonder if that is tax deductible for a writer? LOL. I'd love to hear your views of these books.
Well, I look forward to discussions with fellow Aussies. We have our own particular sense of humour, that's for sure. So much so that, after returning from a recent overseas bus tour of Europe, I am making my next novel a humorous look at a bunch of ageing Baby Boomers on a package tour, called "Old Farts On A Bus". And I'm having a lot of fun with it!
Kind Regards
Carole

Benjamin Mitchell (bgmitchell) | 11 comments Hi Carole.

Your next novel sounds like fun. Hopefully they can wind the windows down on that bus!

:)

message 3455: by C.A. (new)

C.A. Hocking (cahocking) Hey Benjamin! Hate to tell you, but no, we couldn't wind down the windows and I go into that in some detail. All very proper, of course. Not! We Baby Boomers are not called Old Farts for nothing. Gotta laugh!

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments Hi Carole and welcome. JB Rowley's book sounds well worth the read. I could never not read even when writing. But we are all different. All reports I have heard about 50 shades have been that it is dreadful and not well written. I'm not about to find out as I have no interest in reading it. Don't know anything about the song of fire and ice.

message 3457: by C.A. (new)

C.A. Hocking (cahocking) Hello Dale! It's not often that I buy a book because I have seen the movie/TV series first, but this was exceptionally good TV (like The Borgias and Newsroom) and when I found out it from a series of books, I just had to get them. I've read the first one and the TV series follows it closely. Looking forward to reading the rest of them. I will have to keep focussed when I read them, though - there are a lot of characters to keep track of! I envy writers who can read while they are working on a project. Last year I finished writing a TV series that took me a year to complete and didn't read at all during that time. I devoured books when I finished that project! It's a whole different brain-space for me.

Zoey (rozannen) | 1045 comments Hi & Welcome Carole.
I also have the 50 shades trilogy on my shelf (borrowed from a friend) waiting to be read, basically to see what all the fuss is about. I have heard everything from "The best books ever" (which I doubt lol) to "The most disgusting thing ever written" & everything in between. So it will be interesting to see what I think.

Jenny Kadane | 3 comments Hello Everyone, I've recently joined. I live in Melbourne (don't hold that against me) and I am a mother aged 57 years young with 2 grown up daughters. I read various genre and have a blog site going (which I'm pretty obsessed about) because I love writing. I have put my Memoir up on the site (hopefully this is allowable?). Please let me know if it's not. Just finished 'Shades' also, so don't hold that against me...I was curious. :-)

A big welcome to Farseer and Lauren! Lovely to have you with us....

Farseer, you have a wonderful history with your teaching via School of the Air...15 years is a long time! Good on you. The size of your cattle station is immense too (in my eyes anyway!)

Lauren, great that you married an Aussie :) Do you live in Oz now? Our Aussie authors are a talented bunch...enjoy your reading!

Welcome AC, lovely to have you with us...can you please do your promoting of your book over in the Author Spotlight section, where all our lovely authors have their own threads, http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

As we are predominantly a reading group, but love to help our Aussie authors with their new releases, and any other promotions you might have, we need you to go to the correct section. The detail of your book will definitely get lost in this thread, but with your own, members can always check it out...

You can also request to be added to our list of Aussie Authors in the same section. Any questions or advice you need, please don't hesitate to ask...thanks in advance:)

Sammy (booksandtoebeans) Hi everyone! I'm Sammy, a full-on Aussie bogan from a tiny town in NSW, although I'm currently hitting up our big capital city due to uni. I'm an avid reader, although my Goodreads book list isn't as enormous as others I've seen - mainly because uni work takes over and pulls me away from my beloved books. I'm an obsessive book buyer, and love most genres depending on my headspace at the time! My all-time favourite Australian novel to date would have to be a toss-up between Jasper Jones and Cloudstreet! Aaaand that's about all I can think of for now.. Look forward to interacting with everyone :)
