Hi Kylie, I grew up in Renmark and still have family there. I have lived in Adelaide for a long time but still miss the river.

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Mandy,
Do Kiwis count as Aussies here?
Hope so, cos I'm a kiwi. I live in the wilds of the western Waikato region of NZ, in a house on a hill, looking eyeball to eyeball with Mt Pirongia.(That's if mountains have eyeballs.)Love to read and write and have a special interest in animals.

Hi Tui, welcome to our group. Mandy is no longer moderator of the group though, it's Carmel, Laura and myself:) We will look after you, and of course, welcome another Kiwi into our group! You are not the only one, so you'll have company:)

Love NZ..we visited Auckland in May last year, beautiful country...we hope to return one day!

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Thanks for the great welcome. I went to Aussie for the first time a few weeks ago and landed in Brisbane and spent five days south of Brisbane. Went to Byron Bay and the country inland from there around Mt Warning, like Uki and Mullumbimby. It was stunningly beautiful up there in the rainforest. My sudden interest in Oz is because my 26yr old daughter has made it her home and she will be producing my first grandchild soon, so it will be an Aussie. I met so many amazing people there, most unforgettable. It was a feast of home-grown live music, delicious vegetarian food and amazing wildlife. I saw my first snake! My only grump is probably a typical kiwi whinge. It had been wettish while I was there, something I'm perfectly happy about normally, BUT in that part of Oz it brought out these vampire worms that stuck to my feet and sucked my blood. The tough Aussies rolled their eyes at my pathetic distaste.

Aaah leeches Tui!! I loathe them as well! So great you enjoyed it when you visited. Lovely your daughter has made OZ her home, and you will therefore come to visit us much more often:) And congratulations on becoming a Grandma soon! It's a wonderful experience, and it'll change your life for the better. Grandkids are gorgeous!!

message 2661: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Thank-you Brenda. I don't feel so bad about the leeches now I know I'm not alone.

What are 'wetas'?

message 2667: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments J.B. LOL i really laughed when I read your weta comment. I was having a discussion about scary creatures with some Aussies on an Amazon thread recently. They knew I was planning my trip to Oz and they were trying to scare the tripe out of me by telling me about the snakes and poison spiders and "drop-bears" I would meet. I tried to get my own back by showing a photo of the biggest scariest weta I could find. They said it looked like a grasshopper to them!
I'm afraid when it comes to scary critters, the Aussies win every time and we kiwis are total woossies. HOWEVER, when I got there I was okay with the snakes and the flying cockroaches and the huge huntsmans spiders I saw. I even thought the snake was beautiful and the house I stayed in actually had pythons living in the ceiling. I was fine with that.
It was ONLY those danged vampire worms that got to me.

JB Rowley (jbrowley) Tui wrote: "..It was ONLY those danged vampire worms that got to me..."

Hmmm, might be good material for a book! Vampire worms attack kiwi who lives with pythons.... JB :-)

Carol Preston (carolap) | 17 comments Hi I'm Carol and have recently joined Goodreads. Still trying to negotiate my way around and fill my shelves. I've been reading for 50 years or so, so that makes it quite an awesome task. I love historical novels best but also enjoy crime, medical and mystery novels. I also write historical novels and love researching my family history on which my novels are based. Looking forward to learning more about some of you and loving feeling part of the great reading/writing community.

message 2670: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Well vampires are pretty big world-wide right now but I don't think any author has explored the wormy side of vampirism. Could we have them fighting against the were-mosquitoes in competition for human blood?
The pythons could be the goodies, the angels in the ceiling, teaching the philosophy that it is better to kill by love and hugs (which they do) than by bloodsucking or flesh-ripping.
And lets face it, when it comes to protecting this planet for future generations of living things, any way to get rid of humans is all for the best in the end. The pythons, vampires and were-creatures are onto something environmentally useful.
J.B. Perhaps we should collaborate in this marvelous new story idea?

message 2671: by JB (new)

JB Rowley (jbrowley) Hi, Carol. I am new here too. I have found it very welcoming. In fact, I have never felt so comfortable, so quickly in a new online group. 'Tis noice! JB :-)

message 2672: by JB (new)

JB Rowley (jbrowley) LOL. You are fun, Tui. Story sounds absolutely gripping and I'd love to collaborate with you but, alas, might have to put that idea on the back burner until Father Time become more generous! JB :-)

Awfully sad, and a wonderful tribute from you. Take care:) *hugs*

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Thanks for the hugs Brenda.

Michael, that's why Aussies have to be so tough. Everything over there seems big and scary to a timid little kiwi like me. Even the country itself.

This is such a small and safe country . . . er . . . until the ground starts shaking as it did in Christchurch recently.

Good advice, Brenda. I'm a writer, after all - should be able to use my imagination.

Thanks for the welcome, Brenda. And yes, Shona is the best.

Michael, I've done the quiz. Not sure what anyone will make of me from my answers, though.
