Maggi Andersen Great reading weather here too. Cold and raining. I'm editing my own book and reading a bit of The Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne.

A big welcome to you Elizabeth! Please list some of the books by the Aussie authors you've read and love in the relevant threads, we love to add new authors to our lists;D

message 2503: by Shane (new)

Shane Welcome Elizabeth..
I don't mind the odd crime book. Do you have a favorite?

message 2504: by A.B. (last edited Nov 25, 2011 03:07AM) (new)

A.B. Gayle (abgayle) Hi, I can't believe I haven't joined this group before. I'm based in Sydney and started out a reader who became a writer.
So far, I've had two m/m novellas published, both based in Sydney.
The first, Mardi Gras is based around Sydney's Pride Parade (called Mardi Gras). There's a funny story there for anyone who has been following the recent change to their logo. Read my story and it will become obvious why. Another fascinating fact is that the committee objected to me naming the book "Mardi Gras" as they had copyright over the name In Australia. They reluctantly gave me permission. I sent them a copy. I'm not sure if they actually read the damn thing, but now I'm wondering if they did and that's what gave them the idea for the logo. It is very fitting.

My second novella, Caught also has some interesting stories attached. Another case where fact follows fiction. Or in this case, the I hadn't realised a guy was actually doing what my protagonist does.
Apart from those, I have had three short stories published and have two novels coming out in 2012. One is a traditional scifi romance and the other is a contemporary m/m romance based around the GFC.
Oh, and I nearly forgot. In collaboration with the prolific author William Maltesethis year my first print book ws published: In Search of the Perfect Pinot G! Australia's Mornington Peninsula
Apart from these, I write for an online m/m soap called Redemption Reef and am currently almost 40,000 words into my Nanowrimo project.
I look forward to getting to know other Aussie authors.

Did you know that there the Mardi Gras is possibly going..."

Thanks for the welcome, Carmel.
Yes, I did. It's going to be called "Sydney Mardi Gras" I got a newsletter from the Board of Directors today. Apparently there is a fair bit of dissension in the LGBTQ community. Many feeling that by extending the people who are involved to supporters and the wider community, they are losing the focus. My story (which was published back in June 2010, actually touches on these themes.

The new symbol is like an infinity symbol with hearts each side instead of a straight figure eight. The latter is an integral part of my story. Hence the irony of them having a go at my use of the title.

In retrospect, I should have just called it "Pride" as most Americans do not link the term "Mardi Gras" to a celebration of Pride.

Michelle | 2 comments Hi all,

I'm from Melbourne and I stumbled upon Goodreads a little while ago when I was looking for some new books to read but I haven't really had the time to explore fully until now. I think it's going to take me a very long time to read everything I have already marked 'to read' :)

My favourite genres are historical fiction & non-fiction, classics, crime & the occasional chick lit for a beach read. I just finished a degree in classic liteature & history so that's what I've mostly been reading for the last 3 years so looking forward to broadening my horizons a little.

message 2507: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy Chandler Hi Michelle, with that background you must have read really widely. Could you recommend any Australian women writers of either historicals, nonfiction, the classics, crime or chick lit? I'm getting a few lists together for a 2012 Australian Women Writers book challenge and I need suggestions! Thanks :)

message 2508: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy Chandler @Brenda and Shane

Thanks for the welcome. I'm still getting used to the thread idea, but as I wrote to Michelle, I'm getting a few lists of Australian women authors together.

My own personal non-Aussie favourites generally include Nicci French, Henning Mankell, Tove Jansson (The Summer Book, as well as kids), but I've recently made a concerted effort to read Australian women writers, and have come across some fantastic reads, including Kirsten Tranter's A Common Loss, Heather Rose's The Butterfly Man, Caroline Overington's Matilda is Missing and my friend Jaye Ford's Beyond Fear.

These authors could easily become my future faves - but I like to read more than one book per author before I really decide. :) There was another Overington that I had to take back to the library because I didn't get into it, but that may have been my mood: I'll give it another go.

message 2509: by Shane (new)

Shane Thanx Elizabeth. I've added Beyond Fear to my TBR list

message 2510: by Helene (new)

Helene Young (heleneyoung) | 27 comments Beyond Fear is an excellent thriller, Shane. You'll enjoy it. Another author to look out for is Bronwyn Parry. Her next book, Dead Heat, is out in April 2012.

A big welcome to AB and Michelle! Lovely to have you both with us:)

Beyond Fear is an amazingly awesome book!!! Jaye Ford is from my area, and the book is based in areas around the Hunter, which are very familiar! Absolutely loved it!

message 2512: by Shane (last edited Nov 25, 2011 10:51PM) (new)

Shane Well, it seems that Beyond Fear is a must buy, Thanks Helene, and Brenda. Bronwyn Parry also added. Keep the Aussie thriller novels coming, I only seem to read American and English thrillers, not enough Aussie.

message 2513: by Helene (new)

Helene Young (heleneyoung) | 27 comments Another Aussie suspense writer is Sandy Curtis who's newest novel Fatal Flaw has just been released. If you like police crime then PM Newton's book The Old School is good gritty Aussie crime/suspense. Happy reading, Shane :)

Thanks Helene, always good to know new Aussie authors:) I've just added them both to my TBR list!

Shane, did you know Helene is a famous author too.... Helene Young has 2 books out and is working on her third... Wings of Fear (formerly Border Watch) and Shattered Sky. I loved both of those books, and can't wait for the third:)

message 2517: by Shane (new)

Shane Oh......Is that right?
So humble, Helene?
Just checked them out, added to TBR list. If I go near a bookshop tomorrow, I'll see if I can get some copies.

Helene Young (heleneyoung) | 27 comments Lol, thanks for outing me Brenda, but I can't claim to be famous :) My third book will be out in July 2012 with Penguin so I am a little excited about that! (And I appreciate all the support you give local authors!!)

Shane, I can't in all conscience recommend my own books as I'm understandably biased! But I'm very happy to recommend good books I have read myself. Hope you find some of the titles today at your local bookshop:)

The nature of publishing means most Aussie authors (other than the established stars like Tim Winton and Bryce Courtney) are only on shelves for three months after release. That means if you're chasing a particular title you'll need to order it through a bookseller or buy on line - all of which is contributing to the rise and rise of e-books.

Happy reading :-)

I'm trying to find the details of the sale of this book Helene, to add to the Goodreads library. On the website Dave put up, there are no links, and when I google, I only get the same website. Have you any suggestions or links which could give me the details (ISBN, etc) so I can add it? Thanks.

message 2532: by Helene (new)

Helene Young (heleneyoung) | 27 comments Hi Brenda, I've created it as a book now. The isbn is 978-0-9804207-4-6. I don't have a cover photo to go with it... The Tropical Writers webpage is http://www.tropicalwriters.com/books.... and the contact details for purchase are listed there. Does that help or do you need more info?? I'm off to work shortly but can chase it up tomorrow.

message 2536: by Regan (new)

Regan (mollytornado) I posted here over a year ago, but soon after disappeared for reasons I cannot remember. I am back now, though, and since it was a while ago that I posted around here, I thought I would reintroduce myself. :)

Hi, my name is Regan. I am 18 and live in NSW. I have a cat called Kit who I adore (seriously, it's kind of sickening sometimes, haha). I am a movie buff. I also like reading, gaming, and art.

I prefer reading what I think people would call literary fiction, but I also enjoy comic books and graphic novels. At the moment, I am reading through some Batman comics, and I am soon to be taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge on here, so I will soon be a busy little reader. ^_^

So, that's me. I look forward to seeing you guys around. :)

Kylie Hi
My name is Kylie.

I'm getting back into reading now that i have a little more free time on my hands. My friends from the states invited me goodreads and I joined this group as the challenges interested me, as well as it is Aust. based.

Aside from reading, i'm a WOW fan (born and bred on computers), love watching my 11mth daughter learn new things (she loves books also) and my 2 step sons grow (age 9 and 11)

I've joined 2 challenges so far and look forward to participating in many more, as i get introduced to alot of genres and authors i probably would never read on my own. :)

As I said before Kylie, it's lovely to have you with us:) Enjoy the challenges, and you'll find many more coming soon:) You'll also find your TBR (to be read) list growing very quickly, as books are recommended by other members!

Your little daughter would be a delight to watch growing, and it's wonderful she's a book lover already! A lovely age the boys are as well:)

Maggi Andersen I don't think I've introduced myself. I live in the Southern Highlands of NSW. I write historical romance, young adult and mystery novels. My interests are art, art history, architecture, movies, reading, swimming and the gym. Oh, and I love my Persian cat, Affie, but not as much as my husband, he's obsessed! Cats can get you that way.

I'm living here for a few months before travelling up the east coast and then backpacking through asia. I'm trying to do as much reading as I can because I like to review books and films for my twitter account and am looking to read Aussie books by Aussie authors. Any recommendations? Rachael, you just have to visit Newcastle on your way up the coast:) We have wonderful beaches, and loads to see and do:)

I don't know what sort of genre you like, but Beyond Fear by Jaye Ford (from Newcastle) is amazing! Also Wings of Fear and Shattered Sky both by Helene Young (from north Q'ld) are brilliant! She has a 3rd coming out mid 2012, and Jaye's book is her first! There are heaps more I've loved through the year:)

Have a look at my profile, and the books I've read if you like:)
