Well said Melanie;)

message 2405: by Kaz. (new)

Kaz. I watched the trailer to it the other day Dee-Ann and it looked really good, I think it said it comes out in January.

Thanks Brenda, I really like Eve & Roarke, they are great characters, and the library just rang me today to say my copy of "Kill Alex Cross" was in, can't wait to read this latest one.

Thanks for the welcome Melanie, I hope your not all sane as that would make it really boring, LOL.

message 2409: by Kaz. (new)

Kaz. Thanks Carmel & Carob, I'm up to the 6th book in the series, still heaps to go though, it would have to be one of the longest running series out there, does anyone know if there is a longer one, I think the "In Death" series is up to no.34 now.

Jeanette Hi everyone! My name is Jeanette, I'm from and living in New York City, but would love to visit Australia one day, it just looks so beautiful. I'm saving for a trip next year, but in the meantime I'd love to get to know your country through its books. Does anyone have a contemporary novel that they'd recommend as a starter? I read the Slap a month or so ago, and while I liked it, I thought it was a bit brash and not very indicative of real life. Any suggestions would be very welcome! Thanks so much! - Jeanette

Emily E (emily_e1) | 347 comments Hi Jeanette,

It's not really tourist material but check out Andrew McGahan, very true to an element of aussie culture. I would also check out Susan Duncan, she has some emotional stuff (went through cancer) but start with The House at Salvation Creek for general feel for Oz.

There are a lot of other aussie evocative books (The Child of an Ancient People, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Tomorrow, When the War Began etc etc) you can try but these were just a couple to spring to mind.

Enjoy! Hope you love it here :)

Melissa (autonomouse) Hi all
I am a mad book collector who doesn't seem to be able to read as fast as I collect. I mostly read the classics and classic science fiction. I am loving Red Mars.
I live in Melbourne, but am originally from Perth and more originally from Kalgoorlie.
Looking forward to some fun discussions :)

Maggie Hi Ben, I've read lots of Matthew Reilly and most of them are great fun. Didnt like a couple of his books (Contest I think was one) but what the hey. Love his books that have little diagrams in them of the traps set in ancient temples and so on.

If you enjoy various genres check out the different groups on Goodreads - you'll find some great ones. Also check out the lists - they are endless and really helpful if you're looking for something new to read.

message 2449: by Jane (new)

Jane Smart (Smartsgirl) | 6 comments HI, I'm new to Goodreads and relatively new to Australia. Please befriend me on Goodreads.

I'm so over wasting money on books that focus on plot to the detriment of all else. I want to read books that have insight, capture the landscape and the people in it as a backdrop to the plot, and most of all have characters who step off the page and about whom you feel strongly be that anger, dislike, compassion, love!

It's been a long time since I cared about the characters in the stories I read. Really - the classics are the novels that mostly do that for me. Are there writers of that calibre out there nowadays?
