Megan | 114 comments Hi, I'm Megan and just discovered goodreads. I'm over in New Zealand and really enjoy NZ literature but can't seem to find a goodreads group that coveres my interests.

However this year I have decided to delve into my Australian heritage and start checking out the Australian scene. I was pleasantly suprised to discover just how many of the books my mother gave me growing up are Australian classics (which never crossed my mind at the time) but past that I don't know huge amounts about what is going on in Aust - would love to know more.

Aside from that I am fascinated by books with interesting structures that make me think and by YA fantasy which takes me into new worlds.

Briar Rose | 8 comments Hi everyone, I'm Jay, and I'm from Brisbane. Looking forward to participating in a group with fellow Aussies, and reading more Australian books in general (I've been pretty lax up till now!)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Welcome Jay & Megan!
I love YA books too, Megan. Maybe we can discuss/share/recommend books sometime :)

message 1859: by Megan (new)

Megan | 114 comments You guys are so lovely and friendly - thanks so much.

I would be keen to discuss books Jessica. Carmel recommended Melina Marchetta to me above - I have a copy of Looking for Alibrandi but have never read any more of her books. Think I might hunt her out.

message 1860: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Well Ive never read any Melina Marchetta, so I wouldnt know.

message 1861: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Can you link the group, by any chance? Just curious...

I dont even own any Marchetta, which is weird because I have like, 500 books-the majority being YA. She is probably the only main-stream YA author I dont own. However, Im going to read On the Jellicoe Road really soon.

Welcome Megan

I enjoy New Zealand literature as well. Have been reading a few novels either set in, or written by New Zealand authors. Have quite a list of ones still to read :)

message 1863: by Megan (new)

Megan | 114 comments Cool to join an Aussie group to read Kiwi novels :)

I was looking at On the Jellicoe Road - think I might join you with that one Jessica... soon...ish

I know - she is an NZ writer I feel bad for not having read. Book is sitting in the bookcase...

message 1866: by Megan (new)

Megan | 114 comments My favourite books are the Philip Pullman trilogy. Other YA I love are the Ursula Le Guin Wizard of Earthsea books and of course Harry Potter.

Apart from that lately I've been enjoying books that twist reality a bit like Haruki Murakami's Wind Up Bird Chronicles or Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated.

Sorry - I don't know how to make titles into a link.

message 1869: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Hi everyone, I have really started to use goodreads a lot more now that I have my kindle and am churning though the books. The ability to grab books when I want has me reading a lot more lately.
I really would like to make some new goodreads friends (I have 1) and discuss books of interest, but also join some challenges and read genres I wouldn't normally read. I am also looking forward to reading other people's reviews as it is something I would like to do better. Writing a good review is daunting.
Look forward to sharing thoughts with y'all.
Lee

message 1870: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I only bag out Twilight, I just don't care to read Harry Potter at this time

I LOVE Harry Potter :D
His Dark Materials are good. Ive only read the first one, but plan on reading the next too in the near future...

message 1873: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Thanks for the welcome. Bit of a mixed bag when it comes to genres. I'll pretty much read anything. I go throug phases, right now I guess I am in my fantasy phase, as I am plowing through Steven Eriksons Malazan series. My last "phase" was historical fiction in the Tudor era. But also reading some Asminov and " the alchemist". Love the kindle, means I can read all sorts depending on my mood.

message 1874: by [deleted user] (new)

O jess you gotta get onto the next to it only gets better and more complex!

@Lee I have a bit of a collection of Asminov at home including some of his non fiction work..he is pretty amazing!

message 1875: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) @ Melanie reading the foundation series, for a second time, I should try some of his other books. Which of his non-fiction do you rate mos? Since Brenda just told me that juky was non-fiction month maybe I should let you choose my book :)

message 1876: by [deleted user] (new)

well I'm reading very slowly and I mean slowly Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts I love it very interesting, pick it up every know and then and read a little bit more

message 1891: by Michael (last edited Jun 28, 2011 12:22AM) (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) You got to start somewhere, you have already done well with Before I Go to Sleep next will be The Forbidden Game or Me and Mr. Booker or even Diamond Eyes

maybe it could be a feature on your upcoming blog ;)

message 1892: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) ok, so now I see that joining goodreads is actually going to reduce my reading time, because now I am torn between opening the kindle and trolling the threads.

I'm interested in buying a Kindle to use in Oz and for a wireless download. I think that is what I have as I don't plug in my computer to the Internet. I wonder what you bought. When I looked at the Amazon yesterday, there were three sorts ranging from $114 to three hundred and something I think. Laurel
