Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks Carmel and yes, J is definitely a very special person. She never hesitated for a second even though there are quite high risks. She's the coolest. I'm almost finished Slade's Destiny & then I'm in two minds at the moment what to write next - I've got a mystery/thriller that's clamouring for attention but I also came up with a really cool idea for another fantasy novel. Oh well, I guess I'll work it out lol

Fabulous to have you back on deck Tracey...hope you are fully mended now...take care, smell the roses and enjoy life! Good luck with your writing, as Carmel says, we are very interested in keeping up with it, with you..:)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks Brenda, I think my first week home I just spent walking around touching things, putting up my knick-knacks and playing with the dog and cat and just getting used to being home again. It's been a long road but it feels fabulous to be healthy again. I'm off to Melbourne in a couple of months to check out the Tutankhamen display at the museum and spend some time at the zoo, of course. Can't wait.

Oh Tracey that sounds just wonderful!! I can totally imagine you just looking, touching, relaxing with your animals, feeling the joy of being home again after so very long in hospital....so glad you are getting better! It'll be wonderful to go to the Tutankhamen display, and the zoo in Melbourne too! We might even do it ourselves one day...especially as Carmel just mentioned it'll be there till November..

message 1356: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments I think the display is going to be fantastic, some of the items have never left Cairo before so for an Egyptian addict like myself it'll be a little slice of heaven. I used to live in Melbourne years ago for a while in my 20's and fell totally in love with their zoo so that will also be heaps of fun. I'll probably take a zillion photos & bore everyone to tears with tales of my little getaway lol :)

Brenda | 80141 comments Mod
Oh, it does sound good. I haven't been paying a lot of attention, just that everyone seems to be talking about it. Then when Carmel said it would be there till Nov, I thought...hmmm, maybe we could go to Melbourne for a few days, make a mini holiday of it...am now thinking about it!!

message 1358: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments You should definitely go if you can get the chance Brenda - I think it'll be amazing. The only bummer is that the death mask isn't coming but I suppose it makes sense in a way - I can't imagine what the insurance costs would be like for something that priceless. And if you do go then definitely check out the zoo, I think it's one of Oz's best, so well put together and I'm an absolute sucker for the butterfly house :)

message 1359: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80141 comments Mod
Thanks Tracey, we would definitely go to the zoo if we go to Melbourne. I was there probably 30 plus years ago, so I imagine it would be very different now..:)

Tracey - so glad for you, that you're home and life is getting back to normal. May you stay well and happy forever and a day.

May I stow away in your luggage when you go to the Tutenkhamen show? Bit difficult from Queensland... but it will be awesome. And if anyone deserves a treat, you do.

Our daughter, hubby and sons went to Melbourne Zoo about 10 years ago and loved it then. So another great treat for you. Have a wonderful time.

Monya (aka Mary) - another serious book hoarder.

It's wonderful for you that you are well enough to go home, Tracy. All your things must be new to you again. Laurel

message 1364: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Monya ordinarily I'd love to smuggle you in my luggage but I'm only taking carry on - it's only three days so I can dispense with the usually huge suitcase.

Thanks Laurel, even now everything still feels brand new and I'm stunned at how much extra energy I have. When you gradually decline you don't realise how sick you're getting till you really start to get better lol

Muphyn Hello all,

Joined the group ages ago but haven't really said or done anything yet but here goes my 'hello'! :) You all seem like a really friendly bunch, that's just fabulous!

I live in Melbourne and, like everybody else, love, love, love reading but I'm not much into writing (have to do a fair bit at work and my outside-of-work-writing tends to be restricted to some short book reviews on GR!) :D

I often get really busy with work but hopefully I can find the time to chime in here and there...

Really great to meet you Muphyn! Feel free to browse among the different threads, and comment whenever you feel you'd like to. Any books you'd like to discuss, there's bound to be someone who can discuss it with you..
There's a Victorian thread which you might find interesting, it's great to have another Melbournite among us!

I saw the thread on what's on in your state and there was something about Bendigo and some easter activities.. I had no idea re. the waking of the dragon thing, that sounded fabulous! (in fact, I've only been to Bendigo once - or maybe twice ?? - I'm ashamed to say :( )

Thanks all for your very warm welcomes, I already feel at home here. :)

Wow, you're making it all sound just wonderful!! I'm seriously contemplating driving up for a day over Easter, it's very tempting! :) (And a good excuse to visit the woolen mills! i love yarn! :) )

Thanks for the welcome, Laura! :)

Hello fellow Aussies! My name is Naomi and I'm Sydney-born writer and reader. I moved to New York a few years ago where I met my husband, who happened to be Australian (dashing dreams of Greencard acquisition). So I'm back in Oz, and as of this weekend, living on the Gold Coast. About five years ago I started reading a whole heap of mid-century American fiction and the beat writers, which I LOVED. But it's time I started rediscovering great literature from my homeland. I'm looking forward to being part of this group!

message 1382: by [deleted user] (new)

(ps I should say "I met the man who later became my husband." He wasn't my husband when I met him. Brilliant piece of writing, Naomi)

Teresa (phamoustk) Hey everyone :)

My name is Teresa and i'm from Sydney.
I'm a first year uni student studying Media and Communications at UTS.

message 1394: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne I think some really good YA fiction comes from the pen of Susanne Dunlap. She's not Australian, but my daughter loves her exquisite work. Historical fiction that's really well researched. She wrote The Musician's Daughter, Anastasia's Secret, and her latest one is In the Shadow of the Lamp.

message 1395: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Welcome to all the new people. By the way, did you know that although I've lived most of my life in Perth, I was actually born in Melbourne, have visited there several times, have been to Bendigo...and my Dad was born in Bendigo in 1925. Most of my cousins live in Melbourne, and the rest on the gold coast, another favourite place!

message 1396: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80141 comments Mod
Wow Jan!!! No I didn't know...you've been around then. All fantastic places :)

message 1397: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne Jan - so nice to meet a reader from Perth. You are cordially invited to the exhibition launch of my thriller, According to Luke May 26-29 (yes, all weekend) so if you are interested, please let me know, and I'll send you more details. Anyone in Perth at the time is more than welcome to drop in... details on request. (They'll be on my website soon, anyway.) I reckon Perth readers are cool - whenever I give library talks they are very welcoming.

message 1398: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9985 comments Hi, I'm Marianne, I'm in the beautiful Illawarra, near the beach. I work in the health industry and in between reading journals to keep up my professional education (as as a reward for getting through all that dry stuff) I read heaps of books, mostly fiction, but some bios as well.
I do quite a bit of op-shop crawling for books (great bargains to be had, we have a Lifeline bookshop in Unanderra which is excellent)and I get a large proportion of my books via the worldwide book swapping site BookMooch www.bookmooch.com. I've been a member for 4 & a half years, have "mooched" 894 books and given away 661. Managed to get quite a lot of "just out" books (like the latest Picoult)this way and I procure books for friends & family through BookMooch too.
I read while I'm walking on my treadmill and when I go for a walk to the shops and the beach so lots of people in my work recognise me as "that woman who reads while she walks: how do you do that?" I probably read about 4 or 5 books a week.
I started writing reviews when I got books from Harper Collins First Look program, Allen & Unwin, Text publishing to review and got onto this site (Goodreads) to spread the word about some of the great books I got to read. I'm also in a book club, colleagues from work, very casual, used to be lunch, but now afternoon tea and talk about whatever you've read lately and borrow books from each other. It (the book club) started when I read The God of Small Things for the first time (recently read it for the 3rd time!) and NEEDED to talk to someone about it. A work colleague had also read it and soon after that we started our club.
I love reading and read just about anything. I have a spreadsheet with all my books and I give them a rating out of 10 and also mark where they are as I am the lending library for colleagues and family, so I have to keep track of that somehow (Yes, I'm a bit OCD). I have a stamp I put on the edge of the pages and inside "This books is from Marianne's Library, lease return it etc...." The top floor of our house is a library.
Working my way through my collection, I am currently alternating a Jeffrey Deaver book with other books like Picoult, Rushdie, Upfield, Macomber, Austen, Grenville, a bio, some proper literature, etc etc. until I get through all the left-over Deavers, then go on to Gerritsen. Have ploughed through Patterson and Stephen King this way. But there's always something extremely light (and likely sexy) by the bedside to read for 10 minutes before I go to sleep, so I always have at least 2 books going.
I highly recommend BookMooch, have had mostly positive experiences with it, we can always do with more Aussie members if you want to swap books you don't want, but someone else might, for something you do want. It's free to join, your only cost is mailing out books.
