Carmel yes its a really nice area, very popular with holiday makers, nice beach & surrounds. Winter can be as enjoyable as summer, there are some good caffee's with good shopping as well. Some good second hand bookshops (a good one at Palm Beach) as well.

We stayed opposite the Surf Club, and went over for a meal and drinks a couple of times. We might have even seen your sister and hubby, and not known it..:)

message 1260: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne I think I've introduced my self twice, but here goes again. I'm a prize-winning WA author, and all my out-of-print stories are coming out in affordable bundles. My new thriller is out this week, and it's on special at Barnes & Noble! Yay - According to Luke really hit the ground running.

According to Luke by Rosanne Dingli

Matthew Lang (matthewlang) | 143 comments Welcome to Tim, Jayne and Rosanne!

@Jayne are you limiting yourself to any specific genres on your book blog?

I write gay romance fiction, which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea :p

Matt

message 1262: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne Matt, I've read the Folding Star The Folding Star by Alan Hollinghurst and the Swimming Pool Library The Swimming-Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst
both by Alan Hollinghurst, and found them fascinating.
Are your books anything like that?

message 1263: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Lang (matthewlang) | 143 comments Rosanne - I think you'd have to read it yourself and tell me, as I haven't read those. Going from the reviews I'd say I have less emphasis on the sex (although there is some sex). I have tried to tell a story first and foremost, and any sex that occurs in the novel is supposed to further the plot.

I have to say though, even if I had read Alan Hollinghurst, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable comparing my work against his--or really against that of any author--due to the probable bias I would have an an author.

Does that make any sense?

Matt

message 1264: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne It does make sense, Matt - however they are both fascinating books, because Hollingworth is a very philosophical writer and the sex does not figure as much as the blurb would have you believe. He gets into his characters' heads... and hearts.

And yes, I suppose comparisons are odious and all that, still, it's necessary to gain an impression of what others in one's genre or field or topic are doing, because readers will do that, and it's good to be one step ahead of what readers are going to demand.

My thriller, According to Luke, is a straight romantic / religious thriller, and although I have not read every single book of a similar nature, I have had quite a big sampling. Another reason why I read inside my genre is because it interests me. I write the books I cannot find... an empty niche, which I proceed to fill.

Lesley | 328 comments Hi everyone, I have been in this group for a while now and haven't, as yet, introduced myself. So...
I live in rural QLD as a hobby farmer/beef producer.
I love wide, open spaces!
I enjoy historical fiction, non-fiction, travel memoirs/autos, travel memoirs. I tend to enjoy stories with a strong cultural/historical background, and seem to go through phases in my reading.
And, gosh, hasn't my TBR shelf exploded since I joined GR!!
