Iris Blobel (iris-b) | 127 comments Yes, Sylvia - they did believe it. I reckon that must've been late 80s as well. But Australia is a country of many unusual things .... I sometimes stood in front of my husband saying "you're kiddin' me, Australians really do / have that ?" I probably still do ... LOL

message 852: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) This is what I like about being part of the global community now--we've come such a long way from how we used to get info in the 80s and early 90s. Now we don't even have to travel anywhere to know what we can find in another country. We can simply surf the net. It's revolutionised our world and put us all in touch with one another. I have loads of internet friends and have been so lucky to meet some lovely people sites such as Goodreads.

Murray Gunn (murraygunn) | 211 comments You don't have to go far to see the wildlife. I live in Hornsby (suburban Sydney) and have a bush walk to the station. I regularly see wallabies and goannas and have even come across an echidna and a 7-foot red-bellied black snake.

message 854: by [deleted user] (new)

You are just around the corner from me Murray. I always had a vision of you in Northern Queensland for some reason.

message 855: by Murray (new)

Murray Gunn (murraygunn) | 211 comments If you averaged the latitudes of all the places I've lived, it would probably come out somewhere in Northern Queensland.

message 856: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha yes that must be it. :)

message 857: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi Murray, you live in the same suburb as my husband's parents. I know they get lots of possums and lovely birds coming to visit. I don't know about snakes though. LOL

message 858: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) I saw the group and thought there may be some interested readers of those of us who lived, homesteaded and had children in Australia.

Living Beneath the Radar; A Nine year Journey Around the World includes my 3 1/2 years in the Land Down Under and my journey through India, Afghanistan and many other countries.

www.JeffreyRCrimmel.com tell it all.

Don't forget the leeches, Sylvia.

Welcome Jeffrey. That sounds like a book I'd enjoy.

Murray Gunn (murraygunn) | 211 comments Hey! I missed the 1000th member. We're up to 1004 now. Well done, Mandy (and Gail?). I know most of us are here because you rounded us up.

message 861: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) @ Murray,

Ugh! I hate leeches :-)

Welcome, Jeffrey.

message 862: by Neko (new)

Neko Hey Jeffrey, welcome :)

message 863: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) Thanks for the welcome comments. Someone wrote mentioning Living Beneath the Radar. I am selling the first edition for my cost plus postage. If you live in Australia you have to use Amazon. If in the states $13 covers everything. I just need a check and an address and a signed copy is on its way. Three people stiffed me when I sent the book first so I now wait for the transaction to complete.

I am redoing the book for a major publisher so this is a one time offer for a signed book. It is funny and full of great adventures. Guaranteed you will get a kick out of it.

Thanks again and happy reading.
Still waiting for a call from Oprah

Murry I guess it was you who mentioned Living Beneath the Radar. Are you in Australia or the states.

Hi Jeff. I'm in Oz, but I'm only interested in buying epub books these days. I need to keep my collection mobile so I can go research my next travel book.

message 866: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) Living Beneath the Radar is available as an epub. Go to Amazon and find it. I am editing and redoing the first edition so if you do read it forgive the editing bobos. I was in a rush to publish and now I am working my butt off to get it ready for publisher. Good reviews. Check out web and see if it may help you. www.JeffreyRCrimmel.com

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't been around much of late - got stuck in hospital while they try and fix my blood condition. Bad news is it will likely be another two to three weeks before I can escape - Good news though is I now have my laptop and as long as I get 'plenty of rest', blah, I can keep in touch and get some work done.

Welcome to all the newcomers I've missed and I'm sure I'll get to know you better in time.
Cheers,
Trace

message 872: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Dear Tracey, I'm relatively new to this thread, but I wanted to say "get well soon" and may your new year be filled with health, happiness and prosperity!

regards, Sylvia

Dot (busyozmum) | 116 comments Hi everybody. Happy New Year to you all. :o)

I've been a member of GR for over 2 years and never joined in any chatter on the groups before but I guess it's about time I at least said "hello".

A little about me..... I live in rural Victoria with my patient (bookworm) hubby and 2 of our 7 kids. We're a 'his, mine and ours' type of family. We have one grandson and another 2 grands due in 2011.

Although I have been a book lover all of my life, I really never took the time out to read much until about 10 years ago. Still, having 7 kids made it hard to find time. Now with 5 of them settled into their own homes and the 2 youngest becoming more independant, I vowed that 2011 will be the year I allow myself more time to read. With that in mind I took some Christmas money that mum gave me and promptly ordered a Kindle. I've ummed and ahhed over an ereader for years and finally settled on this one. I still have wait 3 weeks for delivery (bahh!) but I'm pretty excited by my decision to just bite the bullet and buy the darn thing. LOL! I've downloaded a heap of freebies and even bought a few ebooks in anticipation of it's arrival.

At the moment I'm keeping myself busy reading Cloudstreet. I just started reading it 2 days ago but I really think I'm going to enjoy this one.

Cheers to all!

Tracey - my prayers are with you that your health is indeed fixed! At least you have the laptop. And they now allow patients to use their mobile phones, at our local base hosp. anyway.

Positivity beamed your way!

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) Welcome Dot. Do most people on this blog live in Australia? I used to many years ago and my kids were born there and I wrote about Australia in the 70s when I homesteaded. Big friggin island for sure.

message 885: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I live in South Australia-and Im fairly sure most members do as well.
Where are you living now, Jeffrey?

message 886: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) I returned to the states in 1979. I live down under for 3 and a half years. Probably before many of the members were born. My daughters are in their 30s now. I am re editing my book for a main publishing house and I am towards the end when I just entered Australia in Sept 1975 from Bali and Timor. I know Australia has changed a lot since the 70s and has become a country with its own identity. The US and England were the biggest influences in the 70s. I even drove a Holden and Landrover back then.

Oh and Carmel, we have 2 kids living in Bendigo. One partnered off and expecting their first baby in July this year. We're only an hour away and get over there as much as we can. Love Bendy! (smile)

Rani Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Yep,country QLD is a big area lol.I'm on the QLD/NSW border.
Stanthorpe is the closest QLD town of any size.
We aren't flooded yet and hopefully we stay that way.

Jeffrey Crimmel (jeffreyrcrimmelcom) Looks like Queensland is making news with 100 year rains. I forgot this is your summer rainy seasons. When I homesteaded we would get cut off every summer. Creek rose 15 feet and we just waited it out. Doyles River in Elands. Near Taree.
