I liked A Suitable Boy though it's a long time since I read it. I didn't like the ending with the girl marrying the wrong man - I can't think of their names now - but I guess that is how it is in India. Vikram Seth didn't write a love story. I liked his poetry novel too. It's very clever. Laurel

message 806: by [deleted user] (new)

Laurel careful with the spoilers please.

I have also read Two Lives: A Memoirand An Equal Music which are also very good. I don't need a classic type of love story.

Tony you're very tricky! Here are your books (I think?):

Dark Arenas and MinX

Here is your Goodreads Author Profile: Cary Stone. You might want to add a bit of info to your profile.

Here is a link to the page: How To Use The Author Program created by the Goodreads staff.

I edited your book blurbs slightly because I think you included some bad code when you copy/pasted the synopsis'. Check the blurbs and make sure I haven't ruined anything!;)

When you get time check out the folder in our group discussions called "Aussie Author Spotlight".

P.S. I love SciFi movies!

message 815: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi all, I'm new to this thread. I'm an aussie author based in Sydney. Right now I'm reading some other aussie authors' books, which is great. This is such a great place to come to find new and established authors. Just wanted to share with you the fact that I run a blog (it's a bit like a virtual TV show) called The Lit Chick Show and in this blog I feature authors from all over the world and they showcase their books. This way, readers can go and watch a "program" and see what the author has to say. The author interviews are either done on video or as an audio-cast. Anyway, thought you might like to check out who's out there.

Wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a wonderful New Year and lots of ... goodreads along the way :-)

Bye for now!
Sylvia

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Thank you, Carmel. I look forward to interacting with you all. This is such a great place to be :-) So far I've been so busy with all my activities, but now that I've slowed down for the Xmas/New Year period I'll be able to enjoy "surfing the net". LOL.

Have a great day!

Sylvia

Daniel Prokop (daniel_prokop) | 2 comments Hi, I'm from Byron Bay and launched my book 'Leaving Neverland' (Why Little Boys Shouldn't Run Big Corporations) at the Byron bay writer's festival. As well as a delightful skewering of perpetual boys my book also offers a way out of Neverland. I have self published and Rex Finch from Finch Publishing did kindly say my writing was ..."reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson." I have put details of my book on Goodreads and I have a website www.leavingneverland.net. Happy holidays to all, Daniel Prokop

message 820: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) @Iris, thank you. I'm glad you liked the site. I've got a long list of authors scheduled for 2011. Oh, and if there are any aussie authors on this thread who want to be on my show, then contact me through the blog: www.litchickshow.com

@Gail, thank you for the welcome :-)

Welcome to the group Jennifer. So glad you could join us. I am a Sydneysider, the weather isn't that crash hot at the moment if that's what you are missing. You have a wonderful Christmas and New Year also.

message 832: by [deleted user] (new)

Do we chat about books here?

message 833: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Jennifer, living in Texas eh! I like Texans, especially when they start talking of how big everything is there, I make their jaw drop when I tell them "well I live in the state of Queensland & Texas fits 9.7 times into Queensland, a state of Australia" usually works a treat. (-:

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi Jennifer, I bet you miss home, especially seeing your family is still in Sydney. My parents have both passed on and this will be my 4th Xmas without my mum, with whom I was very close :-(

I'm spending my time reading and writing this Xmas. I'm up to chapter 4 of my new novel, so I've been very productive. And I'm also relaxing with my Kindle ereader and books from fellow writers that I'm reading.

It'll be a quiet Xmas for me.

Oh, Jennifer, if ever there's a time you should be home it's Christmas. But have a lovely day anyway, don't sit around pining for seafood and salad summer lunch - it's been rainy and cool all up the east coast. I live in S.E. Qld and can't be sure my grownup family will make it here, but I've given them stern instructions I don't want them driving through floodwater and/or heavy rain.

Here's wishing you a nice warm Christmas star to brighten your holiday!

message 844: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Well...it's probably time I introduced myself seeming as I've been posting comments for a while now. I'm Maggie, 50 yr old from Adelaide. I have two daughters 19 and 23, neither of whom have inherited my passion for reading. I read lots, constantly, dont leave home without at least one book in my bag 'just in case' there is a delay at the post office or wherever I'm headed. Mostly I read a wide range of fiction. It seems the older I get however the more non fiction I read now. I work as a registered nurse in a large pubic hospital here in Adelaide. I work in Haematology / Oncology (cancer and chemotherapy to those non nurses out there) and love my job.
I am attempting to re-establish my garden in a home we moved into in Feb 2010.
That's about all I can think of to say just now. I enjoy Goodreads - seem to be addicted to the site.

message 845: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Welcome Maggie...totally identify with that 'just in case' feeling...you don't want to be stuck somewhere without a book! Merry Christmas! (Just gone midnight here in Perth.)

message 846: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi Jennifer,

When I visited the States some years ago, I got the same question: do we have kangaroos hopping along the city streets. I was naughty and replied: Yes. LOL.

Thank you for your thoughts, and I hope you get to come back for a visit soon. Cheers, Sylvia

message 847: by Iris (new)

Iris Blobel (iris-b) | 127 comments Welcome Jennifer ....I know how you're feeling, or at least I think I know because everyone is different. I've been in Australia now for 14 yrs - so 14 Christmases w/out my family and it doesn't get better. Sorry to hear about your parents, Sylivia & Brenda - I'm not sure how you cope, probably with a little candle in the window :-) I miss my family tremendously, but fortunately we've "discovered" skype and it's wonderful to see my girls jumping in front of the computer showing off their pressies. One day I'll take them over to have a "white" xmas.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas !!!

AND !!! Welcome to Maggie as well

PS - Sylivia .... a friend of ours went to live in the States for a while as well and he told everyone that Aussies use the Kangaroos as horses .... yep they believed it !

message 848: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi Iris, you're kidding me! LOL. And they believe it? hehehehe. Someone once I asked me if we spoke English in Australia, but this was back in the 90s - hopefully, since we've hosted the Olympics people know more about us.

message 849: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) We had a dead kangaroo on the street corner once, obviously hit by a car. People have also found them in backyard swimming pools, but mostly they stay in the golf courses and cemeteries. It's kind of strange to be driving down the freeway at 100 km per hour and see warning signs to watch out for kangaroos.

message 850: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Massara (sylvia_massara) Hi Jan, yes it is. But it's even stranger in central Australia where the street signs have the picture of a camel. I really loved that! Suddenly, I thought I was in the Sahara desert. And the great thing was that we're driving around in the middle of nowhere and suddenly, in the distance we saw a bunch of wild camels grazing on a bit of dessert grass. It was great! We certainly don't see camels in the city. LOL
