message 7458: by T.J. (new)

T.J. (teejayslee) | 42 comments Hello Aussie readers! I'm a writer who has just embarked on the self publishing journey, writing Australian-themed fiction while stranded in the eternal winter of Scandinavia.

I kind of understand now why writers like Peter Carey and Kathy Lette wrote such great Oz fiction (no comparison!) living in London - the homesickness makes the memory of sights, smells, accents and people even stronger!

As to me, I have had/am having a strange but interesting life, and that's what draw my novels from.

Hope to pick up some good tips for good reads and good company here!

Cheers,

TJ

Paget | 101 comments Hi everyone
I am Paget. I love to read and I love books and I became obsessed with Australia when I was 6 years old. I saw something on the telly, I remember red soil, kangaroos and strange looking trees. I told my mum I going to live in Australia and I did. Now I am back in Europe and I am missing it. Looking forward to talk about books with you.

Hi David, and welcome. It's been a long time since I waded through Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, which is how I remember feeling about it all those years ago.

Welcome, Christine. Everybody reads all kinds of things here, but many of the challenges Brenda and Phyrnne (and others?) design have an emphasis on Aussie authors. I've found some great new stuff. Enjoy it!

message 7486: by Megalion (last edited May 15, 2016 10:47AM) (new)

Megalion I joined a while back but have been reading too much to spend much actual time on GR.

I'm native California girl but really hope to visit and perhaps even live for a bit in Australia.

My all time favorite movie is the cheesy, campy, musical parody: The Pirate Movie (1982) which was filmed there though the movie makes no geographical claim.

I've made a tag recently to track Australian authors. Hope to beef it up a great deal more from here. Books read so far , tracked mostly starting 2016

Question: Since NZ is "next door " do you track Kiwi authors at all? Maybe a dedicated thread?

Hello Megalion and welcome. I am sure you will find lots of Australian authors here! Nothing specifically Kiwi though I'm afraid.

message 7489: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Although we are known to claim other famous Kiwi people like movie stars as our own, aren't we, ladies?

message 7490: by Megalion (new)

Megalion Heehee... like Karl Urban and Lucy Lawless for starters?

message 7491: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments Welcome Megalion - Keith Urban was born in NZ but his parent moved to Australia when he was in his teens and still live there (well his mum does - his dad died) So yep we do claim him.

Don't think we've ever claimed Lucy Lawless though - she was married briefly to an Aussie - but they lived in NZ

message 7492: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9861 comments Welcome Paget and Megalion. Hope you find some good Aussie books to read on this site. :)

message 7493: by Megalion (new)

Megalion Yes that's right, he's Daisy's father.

And I didn't know that bit about Karl. I was so thrilled to see him start picking up roles in decent sized and the big Hollywood movies.

If only Kevin Smith hadn't died in that tragic fall. He was about to start filming a war movie featuring Bruce Willis... Tears of the Sun I think?

And now I'm reminded of Marton Csokas. .. another one to break into Hollywood like Karl.

And should be very obvious now. .. hardcore nutball here as Lucy dubbed us fans.

...and the occasional Kiwi expat or longtime visitors, one of my absolute faves Deborah Challinor springs immediately to mind! Aaaaaand...Not forgetting "our" Vicki Tyley ;))

Btw, we have loads of fantastic Australian authors covering a wide range of genre's...especially some of my faves, Historical Fiction and Crime.

Welcome Megalian, and Paget! :D

message 7498: by Connie (new)

Connie Howell Hello all, my name is Connie Howell. I live in the Blue Mountains, West of Sydney. I have been a reader all my life and in 2014 I became a published author. I self published Perfectly Imperfect, How to be Imperfect and Remain Lovable and a kindle (small) book called Portable Snippets of Wisdom. Thank God I am married to a computer genius as I find it hard to get my head around doing "stuff" on mine. I am a thinker by nature so writing seems fairly natural and I have been writing in one way or another since school days. It is only in the last few years that I really did anything with it. I love being a member of the Aussie Readers group and Goodreads as it has opened up a whole new world of books and book lovers to me. I am enjoying the book challenges and am now an even more regular visitor to the local library. I can even reserve on line, whoo hoo I can just about manage that. Thanks everyone it is good to be amongst you all.

Welcome Connie:) It's great to have you with us and especially participating in the challenges. If you head over to our Author Spotlight section here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... - and click on "new topic" in the top right hand corner, you can create your own thread to tell us all about your books. That way your posts don't get lost in this (or any other) threads! Our author guidelines are here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Enjoy:)
