Addie Hi I'm Annie from Brisbane. I'm currently reading the Phryne Fisher murder mysteries by Kerry Greenwood. I had a goal of 30 books last year and ended up reading 34. My reading goal this year is 35 but as I have read 5 books already I might need to change this. Love reading all of your reviews.

message 7216: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Flowers Hello to all,
I am Thomas, 55 years old, living in Germany. 5 Years ago I started to read (mostly) only english written books and so far I have read almost 100.
This year I am starting a new personal challenge. I have heard about Ann Morgan (Tedtalks: "My year reading a book from every country in the world"). She read a book from almost every country in the world.
That is not exactly what I try to do. But I will try to read several books (5 - 10) from all continents over the next 5 years. This year (2016) I am starting. And I like to start with Australia, New Zealand and Oceania (since I cannot think of ever have read a book from those countries).
Can you help me? What books do you recommend (only fiction). What books are not only a good read but also helpful concerning the country?
Thank you very much in advance!
Best greetings,
Thomas

Hi Thomas, welcome to the group :) If you browse the threads you'll see many Australian book recommendations. Look for our Top 5 Aussie authors from 2015 which has a lot of our best recent reads and I'm sure will help.

Good luck and enjoy :)

PattyMacDotComma | 3310 comments Welcome all! Watch out!

My only complaint about this group is that I'm finding way too many good books! Everyone's reviews are so helpful that I'm discovering new (to me) authors, especially Aussie ones, so my To Be Read list is out of control!

Carolyn | 9865 comments Welcome Thomas!

I would recommend Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey and The Secret River by Kate Grenville as being two recent popular Aussie books with a very Aussie flavour.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Welcome Thomas, there are so many great books by Aussie authors to choose from, I agree with Carolyn's choices ^^above and would add two of my most recent best picks:

Salt Creek by Lucy Treloar
And
The Butterfly Enigma by Lorraine Campbell

If you check out the reviews of people's reads in recent Aussie author challenges you will find loads of great choices :)

Hi Thomas. Schindler's Ark is by Australian author Thomas Keneally. I believe it has been adapted to film.

Carolyn | 9865 comments Thomas, if you like non-fiction Kinglake-350 by Adrian Hyland is an excellent factual account of what it was like to be in the midst of the devastating Black Saturday bushfire in Victoria in 2009, killing 173 people and destroying 200 homes.
Tim Winton and Peter Carey have also written some great Australian novels. A few people here have also recently read and recommended Spirits of the Ghan by Judy Nunn, about building the railway between Alice Springs and Darwin, so set in the Aussie outback.

Nicole Silver (nicolesilver) | 10 comments Hi
are we allowed to mention our own fiction books set in Australia or not?
I wish I was an Australian but I'm not, close though ...I come from a land down under...with crocs, and mosquitos and snakes ...that make life... interesting.

Lesley Moseley | 36 comments Hi , I have transferred over with the Shelfari crowd. I have wriiten and self-published through Createspace, 5 books of a self-help nature.. I was born in Durban, SA, and came to Oz in Jan 1970. I love reading but am very selective. I live in outback qld, Greenvale, 205 from my library in Charters, and 245 west of Tvl. Rural library system is amazing as I can order books from their catalogue, and request purchase, if its not there... However, as my librarian says only 5% of her clients, like to read what I like..Hoping to narrow the recommendations, here.. Alex Miller is one of my favourite..Anyone else?
