Book rescuer is just a jokey title I was given because I cannot leave a bookshop without saving books and taking them home with me:)

[book:We Need to Talk About Kevin I really enjoyed this one!

I live north of the Sunshine Coast where I have resided for 22 years, prior to that Melbourne, New Guinea and Sydney.
I would probably be called a fussy reader in that I get very bored with writers who have to tell you things like what the characters were eating at what time giving full descriptions of food (plse cookbooks only) and full descriptions of clothing. My mind roars with "please get on with the story"....I don't accept that it is to add to the intrigue, for me frustration. Poor English and poor paraghraphing makes me wonder about editing. Do they edit author's works anymore?
I am interested in books that have evolved from a history perspective particularly around the Arts, WW1 and WW2. I have visited many war graves overseas where I have been deeply moved at the terrible loss of many young lives. Also events from yesterday and today reading non English speaking writers. Sometimes English translations don't work as well as the native narrative however, something hard to avoid.
I have recently finished The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Richard Flanagan and The Glass Palance by Amitav Ghosh who also wrote Sea of Poppies (read sometime ago) part of the Trilogy River of Smoke and Flood of Fire (not read yet).
Being a French language student for many years I also like to read French novels, however, in many instances I don't read fluently and spend sometime translating. Good for "those little grey cells" re Ms Poroit!!!
Cheers
Welcome Jeanette, lovely to have you with us! Feel free to browse the threads - you'll find a lot to interest you I'm sure:)

Huge apologies, I just saw this intro page pop up on my feed, and thought oops, I probably should have done that already. So in the spirit of better late then never, here's my intro.
I live in South West Sydney with my wonderful hubby, who very good naturedly tolerates my book hording habits and 2 my beautiful 3yr old dogs Snowy (Bichon Frise) and Sooty (Black Labradoodle).
I joined Aussie readers maybe a month ago now, and joined Goodreads in March, so I think I'm still relatively new to the goodreads space... but I am loving it so far. I've always been an avid reader, and recently just completed my reading challenge a month early (I set it for 2 books a week for a year), and I think I was able to do that because of monitoring number of books i'd actually read and by completing the challenges with Aussie Readers - so thanks for that.
I like to believe I read a wide range of books, but in reality I have a serious weak spot for anything Fantasy, and tend to occupy most of my reading around that, although I do try and fill in the gaps with the classics I know I probably should have already read, plus the contemporary books that everyone deems "must" be read... and if there are any gaps among all of that then I like to think i'm pretty open - my goodreads "read" list will probably beg to differ however lol.
I think what I am most excited about since joining the book group the chance to discuss books with other like minded people, and be exposed to books I normally wouldn't consider or be enticed to read on my own... and that's the exciting part of life isn't it, those little surprises along the way to keep things interesting... even if we are just talking about books!
Cheers :)

Thanks Brenda, I'm really loving this group. :)

I'm Chloe, from Melbourne. I've used GoodReads to keep tabs on my reading for years, but hadn't thought to join a group until now!
When it comes to books, I'm not loyal to any particular genre. Lately, I've been enjoying the works of our talented female Australian authors, like Favel Parrett and Sofie Laguna. I'm also partial to literary fiction, non-fiction, true crime and the occasional biography.
I'm looking forward to chatting with and getting recommendations from fellow Aussie readers.

Thanks Carolyn, Phrynne and Sally - it's lovely to be included and involved.

I loved "The Australians" series which I read many years ago by Vivienne Stewart. Unfortunately, I haven't got the time to read monthly book selections but I love to diss book.
I live in Brisbane, Qld. which is, at present, hot and humid. I love W.A. which closely compares to Qld for lifestyle and sometimes climate, not to mention character. I would love to go to Tasmania for a visit but have not had the opportunity as yet.
Cheers to all.
