What do you (hope to) write, Shane?

We have a thread on Indigenous Literature and Authors that would benefit from your input.

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hi to all the newcomers - it's amazing how fast this group is growing, I can hardly keep up :) Especially at the moment - it's that frantic time of trying to make sure that everything goes right before I push publish on Slade's Destiny LOL

Hi DM! Great to have you in the group. The best wayt to get answers to your questions about publishing is to start a discussion. Just click on 'New Topic', put it in the 'Book Related Banter' folder and type your question. I'm sure you'll be surprised by all the responses you'll get. The authors that are members of this group are amazing! In the meantime here is another discussion we had that you might find interesting about marketing your novel in Australia:

Jenny | 114 comments Welcome DM. I lived in South Gippsland for many years and loved it. Most of my father's family still live there. Good luck with your writing. I love how stuff just turns up in what we write. It really is the closest thing to magic I've found.

message 605: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Welcome D.M. - have you published your book in e-format? You can do this via Amazon's DTP or via Smashwords - takes a little time formatting but it's instant publishing with very generous royalties.

Cheers,
Trace

I can totally identify DM with Chronic Fatigue - I've got an anaemia problem which is leaving me exhausted so when I have energy, like you, I write like there's no tomorrow :)

Becca (aussiebookworm) | 15 comments Hey everyone. Already posted in the Favourite things thread, but thought I'd drop a line here too.
Well my names Becca. I'm 18 years old and I'm expecting my baby on the 29th of this month :)
I live in Brisbane, I have my entire life. I've only been out of QLD twice.
I'm a self confessed bookworm. I love puzzles.
And I think that's about it...

Welcome to the group Becca.

Don't feel bad about being out of Queensland once by the age of 18, I was exactly the same at your age, NSW that is. All the best for the 29th-ish. (for you, I hope it comes early.) :)

message 609: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Welcome Becca, you must keep us updated about your new bub - I'm currently going mushy over a litter of kittens so I can understand your excitement.

message 610: by Neko (new)

Neko Ooohh..I forgot to write something here when I joined up ^^;; Mandy, thanks for the invite and alerting me to this group :)

I'm from Tassie who loves to design/draw/read/collect/play games.

I've been reading comics for pretty much my whole life but found books a task to read, it's only been within the past couple of years my interest in books/novels has been spiked. In High School, I was put off reading due to the teacher making my class read Bridge to Terabithia. I hated it!

Since I love art and cartooning my passion has always been with comics..I love seeing different artwork/art styles.

Last year I set myself a challenge of reading 100 books within the year. I didn't think I was going to do it, but I did..Therefore my growing love for books blossomed again :D

message 611: by Velvetink (new)

Velvetink | 136 comments Hi Laura, welcome and congrats on reaching 100 books! I set that challenge to myself this year but not sure I will make it. It's been good though to suddenly discover time I didn't know I had (to read more). :)

message 612: by Becca (new)

Becca (aussiebookworm) | 15 comments Thank you for the warm welcomes (:
And Tracey I will definitely keep you all informed.
Aww I love kittens. How many are in the litter?

message 613: by [deleted user] (new)

Becca I wish I was at home I'd provide you with the link. Tracy posted a link in the 'Lets talk about weather pets & anything'. (not the correct name, I am on my phone so its hard to switch between screens) I will find it for you when I get home if you can't. :)

Thankyou for the welcome :)
Good luck reaching the mark! It is easier than you think. Just let the books do the telling and get lost in their worlds..ehehe!

message 617: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Gail that's a great word 'waspish'! Don't think I've ever been clever enough to use that in a sentence. What happened to 'bitchy'? Did someone object?;D

message 618: by [deleted user] (new)

Mandy it was me, I didn't feel comfortable with it. I'm happy with waspish though. :)

message 620: by John (new)

John Hiya, folks!

I am American, and have never been to Australia (yet!). I have read many books by Aussie authors (some not set there) and have joined to learn how well known they might be in Australia itself.

One thing that amazes me is the popularity of Stephanie Plum all over the world - I'm from New Jersey (originally), and thought the books wouldn't 'travel well'; then again, a British acquaintance said the same thing to me about the Agatha Raisin series.

message 621: by Mandapanda (last edited Nov 19, 2010 03:20PM) (new)

Mandapanda Hi John,
Welcome to the group! I haven't read the Stephanie Plum series but I'm totally in the minority. Everyone I know loves those books. I'm sure I'll give in soon and give them a go. It's interesting what you say about settings and how they translate from one country to another. I guess we are used to reading books set in different countries.;)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hi all to yet more newcomers - it's great having so many book lovers in the one spot to chat to. Not that I'm around as much as I'd like - I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew with finishing the final book in the trilogy AND redecorating the house.

And Laura it's wonderful to see someone's love of reading blossom. I've always loved books but I have a younger sister who won't read anything more in depth than gossip magazines - go figure

Good luck with redecorating the house! What a task it would be. I find it hard enough to go get some prints framed that I've had for years..lol

Gossip magazines are full of indepth reading ;) lol

Mandy, I picked up the sixth book in the series 'Hot Six' by mistake from the library once and read it anyhow. It was the funniest book I had read for a long while, and then I had to go out and read all the earlier ones and then the latter ones as they appeared. ... some of the latter oones were not as good, but I have given no. 6 to a lot of people and they became addicted to the series as well.

Yeah my Mum and Sister swear by them. From what I understand it's like a very humorous crime story written with a bit of Chick-Lit flair! They also love the secondary characters.

message 628: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments I haven't read any Stephanie Plum either but from all the buzz I'll have to check her out - maybe I'll start with No.6

@ Laura - I'm actually loving the redecorating although it's a bit of a handful with the dog, cat and now five kittens - I'm waiting till all 'accidents' have ceased before replacing the carpet and learning to live in chaos for a while :)

message 629: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky I recommend you start with the first Steph Plum (Janet Evanovich) book ... One for the Money. It sets up all the relationships and particularly explains Lula's story. God I love Lula. And Ranger ... :)

BlueSky How could I forget Grandma Mazur!!! She is a riot :)
And I loved Grandad's powder blue Caddy as well (or was it a Chevy? Long time since I have read them).

message 633: by John (new)

John I think the car actually belonged to her Uncle Sandor?

message 634: by [deleted user] (new)

Piffle, I just checked out Stephanie Plum's books to see what I was missing out on. ebook format of course.

This title is not available for customers from:
Australia

message 635: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate that.

message 636: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky You are probably right John ... some things seem to fall right out of my head! What kind of car was it?

message 637: by John (last edited Nov 25, 2010 05:27PM) (new)

John As an American I just got that on a British book that I wanted!

I think the blue car was a Cadillac?

If you can get Laurie Notaro's stuff as e-books I think you folks might like her quite a lot. Her story of an emergency tampon run on Christmas Eve still has my mom laughing thinking about it months later.

message 638: by tee (new)

tee (teerex) | 1 comments Hi thanks for the invite Mandy! My name is Tee and I herald from Brisbane. I've been in Melbourne for a year and am terribly pleased to be back. I love reading all types of books and some of my favourite authors are listed on my profile. I'm currently reading Franzen's 'Freedom', and one of the Listed Brow anthologies. I just picked up a biography on Virginia Woolf (Hermione Lee) from the local second hand book store.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. xx

message 639: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Welcome Tee, I'm another Brissie girl who ironically enough also lived in Melbourne for a while. I loved the shopping, the zoo and the museum and the pizza but hated pretty much everything else so I was glad to come home.

message 641: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments Hi I have just joined this group, thanks Mandy for asking me to join.

I am addicted to reading and usually have 3 books on the go at a time. One on IPod, on CD in the car and the other a book to read. Most of my books I borrow from my local library but along the way I have also collected some books of my own but I don't know when I will get time to read them because I can't seem to stop ordering books through the library and of course they have an end date. At the moment I am trying to get through 2 books that are due back on Monday and can't be reborrowed because someone wants them, so I will be busy reading over the weekend.

message 642: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I have been enjoying some great Australian authors recently - I am slowly plowing though the books by Di Morrissey - the last couple I have listened too seem to be much the same and my favourites so far have been "The Valley" and "Barra Creek". I have read all of Rachael Tresure's books to date and I have absolutley loved all but the last one as I thought it had a bit too much controversy in it. I have also read most of Belinda Alexandra's books and I love them. Fiona Palmer's "The Family Farm" was another good book by an Australian author. I absolutely love all the books I have read by Keri Arthur, especially her Riley Jensen series.

I have a lot of other favourite authors as well and I love to read series and I like to start at the beginning and work my way through them.

I enjoy books on Vampires (love stories), Historical romances and a good family saga. For a time I was enjoying books on families in war time England as well but haven't read anything in that genre recently. Too busy concentrating on my vampires authors and their series.

I am in a book club too and at the moment we are reading "The People's Tain" by Thomas Kenneally - so far it is hard going for me and is not a book I would have chosen on my own - but that's what book club is all about.

Have a good evening all!

message 643: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I forgot to say that I live on the Sunshine Coast, I notice there are a few on this list who also live here.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I have also read 3 books by Anna Campbell which I thought were pretty good, especially "Claiming the Coutesan"

I have been trying to think of books I have read by Australian authors.

message 644: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Bronwyn. Take your time we have plenty of questions for you to answer, plenty of people here to discuss things with no matter what you like to read. :)

message 645: by Velvetink (new)

Velvetink | 136 comments Hi Bronwyn & welcome!. I was just wondering what Di Morrissey's books were like, read a review of one or two but didn't know anyone who had read them. Glad you liked The Valley, I was thinking of giving that one a go.

message 646: by Neko (new)

@ Velvetink...I have read a few of Di Morrissey's books, and always enjoy them.

message 648: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments Thanks for the welcomes, it's good to meet people who like to read as much as mucah as I do, no-one I know personally does, they think it's funny that I read as much as I do.

I used to walk along reading a book until I discovered the IPod and that I could get books for the library to go on it. It's a lot safer.

I only found out about Good Reads about 4 weeks ago when I went to a scrapbooking night at my local Scrapbook Store in Nambour. That would be a thanks to Jenny for telling me about it.

message 649: by Velvetink (new)

Velvetink | 136 comments Bronwyn I don't know how you walked and read a book - could be dangerous..least I know I would fall over!

I also recently discovered the TV actress Judy Nunn is now writing novels.... has anyone read her? Some of her titles sound interesting too.

message 650: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) I've heard about reading while walking, so I tried it once. It works, but I found I was walking slower and not getting sufficient exercise. You would probably get faster, and of course I was crossing green, open space. In cities, it's good to have a lightweight book in your handbag at all times...for waiting for transport, waiting in queues, travelling on public transport etc. But I wouldn't try reading while walking around Melbourne...you might get hit by a tram! Love Melbourne. I was born there. Winters are too long, however.
