Alison Stegert (ali_stegs) Hi Mandy,

Thanks for the invite. What a great idea! I try to read as much as I can by Aussie writers. I'll give almost anything a go, but I won't promise to finish it! I'm an avid reader and an emerging writer from Samford, QLD. On the reading front, I'm currently enjoying a few oldies but goodies by James Maloney. On the writing front, I'm letting draft 3 of a YA novel ferment in a drawer for a few weeks.

I think I might be regressing a bit with my childhood. Since Jazz has her kittens I spend more time looking at them than working lol
Must - be - disciplined - and - get - new - book - out

Thought I'd Shatner speak for a while but it didn't help Cheers all

Jenny | 114 comments Welcome and good luck with the YA, Alison. You might want to leave it to rest for more than a few weeks though. I find it takes a good-ish break before you're able to view it with a fresh eye.

Jan (auntyjan) Welcome to all the new people, especially those from Perth/currently residing in Perth/ with a Perth connection of some kind. ( And let's extend the welcome to those who've been to Perth or hope to visit some day.)
You guessed it, I live in Perth! My daughter has a really good friend from Bergen in Norway, who visited us in Perth this year. Hello Hilde and Kurt.

Jan if you're feeling energetic you could always start a WA thread in the State by State round-up folder so you can connect with your neighbours on the west coast!:)

message 556: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) But then I would have to find out how to start a new thread, something I don't know how to do.

Sounds perfect to me Carol! Thanks.:)

@ Jan
I don't mean to pressure you to start a new thread if you don't want to Jan. I'm sure there are lots of WA'ites in the group and one of them will get round to it eventually.:)

message 558: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Welcome Jan, although I've never been to WA myself my mother always said it was the prettiest city in Australia. She lived there for a while in the '60's and adored it.

Thanks Carol. Unfortunately I'm a bit of a technophobe and my brain gets scrambled when I read something with more than two steps. One day I will tackle it. But not today.

Hi everyone

I'm Laura - currently wading my way through study (Bach. of management) , work (an Organiser for the National Tertiary Education Union), and three kids|1 hubby|assorted pets and household chores. I read obsessively and am constantly told off for reading anything that ISN'T a text book .. I'm currently enjoying going through Collins and Penguins Classics and discovering all those thoroughly dense novels which I've always wanted to read, but haven't .. I am a compulsive re-reader and my hubby is always tut-tut-ing when I pick up one of my fave's and read it for the umpteenth time .. I love discovering new authors and I love to be transported when I read - I want to be utterly ensconced in the plot and the characters :)

message 561: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Laura welcome to the group. Hopefully we won't get in too much trouble encouraging your reading habit. I'm a compulsive re-reader too. (my copy of Jane Eyre is falling apart I've read it so many times.) That's why there are so few books on my book shelves. Being part of GR has diminished that compulsion,as my second compulsion is to try and control my ever growing pile of books in my TBR. :)

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy Hey Laura, Welcome to a great group!

Laura your life sounds like mine a few years ago. Trying to juggle study, work, family, pets AND get time for yourself to lose yourself in a good book. Thankfully I graduated, quit work and now write full time... aaaaah bliss

Elizabeth (butterfliesinthesun) | 145 comments Hello All, My name is Liz, I love to write, I have been writing since I was just 7 years of age. I am currently writing a crime novel. It has been accepted my publishers, but I am looking at all avenues before I sign the dotted line. I also have to finish up my novel to my liking, I want to give it everything I've got.

I have added my first chapter on goodreads, I also have a facebook link. By all means you can inbox and queries or questions and I will be more than happy to answer them.

Thank you all for your time.

message 570: by Shane (new)

Shane Hi Mandy, all...
Thankyou Mandy for the invitation to join Aussie Readers. Love the concept of the group!
I'm from Wagga Wagga, NSW. 30yo Aboriginal male, extremely avid reader, and aspiring writer. (Also soon to be married 20th Nov)
My favorite reads mostly revolve around thrillers, of a paranormal nature....eg. James Herbert novels.
So far I call 'The pillars of the earth' my favorite book of all-time, I cannot say enough good about Ken Follett's masterpiece.
Sadly I haven't read a great deal of Australian writers, but have ambition to change that, really looking forward to the recommendations and reviews passed my way...
Happy reading follow Aussies...
Cheers

message 571: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Shane, looking forward to gaining your perspective on things. I haven't read 'The Pillars of the Earth' but have been meaning to get to it soon.

Hopefully we can get you interested in a few Aussie Authors. I was amazed when I joined this group how many there were.

Thankyou Gail :-)
The Pillars of the earth - Drop whatever your reading now and
I hear regularly about so many great Aussie authors that don't sound household and don't seem to get enough recognition on the world stage. Hopefully our group here can be a part of changing that culture!

message 573: by [deleted user] (new)

I love that recommendation Shane "Drop whatever your reading" I won't be able to quite manage that but I'll certainly bump it to the top of my TBR. :D

I am attempting to write my own novel at the moment and am planning on doing a Diploma of Arts at Uni next year to get better experience on writing. My friend and I have an addiction with buying books and are permanently discussing what we have seen in the stores, etc.

message 580: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Angela, there are plenty of reading tragic's here. It would be great to have your involvement in book discussions. We have a few going on at the moment but feel free to start one of your own.

Hi Angela!
I also write paranormals (for harlequin nocturne bites and ellora's cave) and if you love writing them too I seriously recommend joining romance writers of australia which encompasses all genres (sorry, hope I'm allowed to recommend) through their eloop we also have members who have their own paranormal blog and yahoo group http://darksidedownunder.blogspot.com/
I just wish I had all this info when I started out writing =)

Jenny | 114 comments Hi Murder and...are you MAD??? If you have a publisher who has accepted your novel before it is even finished, why would you want another one? If what you have is good enough to score a publisher before it's even finsihed, then shouldn't it be an agent you're seeking? After all, agents are experts at scoring the best deals, particularly for authors whose work is in demand. I'd say good luck with it, but it sounds as though you don't need luck.

Patrick Johns | 2 comments Hi, I live in Brisbane and run an all-men book group - there are six of us, we have been going since 2001 and we have read 62 books (we came 2nd in the Courier Mail best Brisbane Book Club competition a while back). My (scathing) review of The Slap generated a bit of discussion on GoodReads... My top five Aussie novelists would be: Peter Carey, Patrick White, David Malouf, Andrew McGahan and Tim Winton. Yours?

message 588: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 07, 2010 04:00PM) (new)

Welcome to the group Patrick. We have been discussing The Slap. Maybe you would like to join in and give us an alternative point of view.

We also have a specific thread for our favourite Aussie Authors which you may or may not find interesting reading.:)
who's my favourite aussie author

message 589: by Jennifer (JC-S) (new)

Jennifer (JC-S) (jenniferjc-s) Hi, everyone and thanks to Mandy for the invite. I am Jennifer Cameron-Smith, a Tasmanian who has been living in Canberra for the past 36 years. I am a voracious reader, and now that I no longer participate in the paid workforce, reading occupies a lot of my time. I love history, biography, historical fiction and literary fiction but I'll read almost anything .
My favourite Asutralian authors include Patrick White,James McQueen, T.A.G Hungerford and Tim Winton. My other favourite authors are the Bronte sisters (particularly Emily), and Dorothy Dunnett.

I look forward to meeting you!
Jenny in Canberra

Velvetink | 136 comments Hi Jenny! Welcome. I lived in the ACT for a couple of years back in late 80's - early 90's. I liked going on short road trips to little country towns looking for places my ancestors lived back in the 1850's. Patrick White is one of my fav biographers. I have Tim Winton on my wish list.

message 591: by Shane (new)

An aussie group is definitely a great idea!!

message 597: by ellie (new)

ellie k (warriorbarrd) Hi everyone! It seemed appropriate that my first post in the group should be in the introduction topic. :]

My name's Kirsten, but Kay for short, I'm 22 and I've always been a compulsive reader. It has only gotten worse since I started working in a public library this past July. I have more books loaned out to me than I know what to do with and they just keep piling up!

I also write - or I used to but haven't found as much time lately with work and life etc. I definitely need to write more, as I keep finding books in my library that have almost the exact same plot as ones I've had in the back of my mind for years.

It's disheartening! :P Anyway, a friend put me on to GoodReads a while ago and I love it! My goal is participate in discussions and review more, to get me in the swing of using the written word again. :]

So... hello! :]

message 598: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Kay glad to have you part of the group. I am currently trying to drum up some interest in The Finkler Question if you are interested. Okay so I am shameless. :)
