Joanie | 94 comments For anyone who likes cooking memoirs Confections of a Closet Master Baker by Gesine Bullock-Prado (Sandra Bullock's sister) is great. It's all about her decision to stop working for her sister's production company in Hollywood and open a bakery in Vermont.

volunteer positions (like firefighter above) work as long as the book focuses on the work experience. Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search and Rescue Dog works

Wendy UK (wendyuk) | 724 comments Mister Teacher?

This is along the lines of All Creatures Great and Small but a teacher rather than a vet. Not strictly non-fiction, but accounts of events in the author's life as a teacher. So it's a memoir but set in a fictional place with made up names for characters - as are James Herriot's books.

Is it allowed?

In the database and resources I check, the Herriot (James Wight) books are classified as memoirs. Mister Teacher is classified as fiction. I have to use the resources available to me. Sorry, no

Deedee | 2352 comments All Things at Once by Mika Brzezinski
from the goodreads description: "As the co-host of MSNBC-s popular morning show Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski has established herself as a leading political news journalist and beloved television personality. " The book is about her career and about how she has balanced work and family life. I think this will fit the task ---- am I right?

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments I read a hilarious book that would work for this for all you people, like me, who had to work in retail hell.

yes to all-
[book:How to Lose Friends & Alienate People
seems like it might stray a bit, but it does give an insider's view of Vanity Fair and its parent company, Condé Nast.

Juniper (jooniperd) Last year, I won a copy of Coppola: A Pediatric Surgeon in Iraq. I have yet to read it but will be using it for this task. Through emails with the author as well as reading many positive reviews, I think this will be a tremendous account of Coppola's time in Iraq. Therefore, I wanted to suggest it as a possibility for those who have yet to find a book for this task.

Sara VA wrote: "Would The World According to Bozo work? Its mostly autobiographical, but two other writers helped him write it."

I think it is more autobiography (with writing help)- "of training for space flights at NASA; of decorating Clark Gable′s house; of searching for the cannibals of New Guinea" It seems that this book goes beyond the scope of work memoir.

message 71: by Leigh Ann (new)

Leigh Ann (leighannflyingonsilverwings) Would Memoirs of a Geisha work for this task? I didn't even realize this was a true story until I started reading it. Evidently she dictated her memoir to the author of the book and told him to publish it upon her death.

message 72: by Liz (new)

Liz If I remember correctly, it's not really a true story. The author put that in to make it sound authentic, and he wrote somewhere else that it was fiction.

It needs to be classified as non-fiction

It is indeed fiction. However, Golden did have a very real informant, Mineko Iwasaki, who later published her own memoirs, Geisha: A Life. I haven't read it yet, but now that you've reminded me, I may be switching some books around! I've always wanted to compare the two.

message 82: by chucklesthescot (new)

chucklesthescot Here's a controversial one for you! The author is a Reverend who claims this to be the true story of the vampire that he hunted and put to rest in a London Cemetery. The Highgate Vampire: The Infernal World of the Undead Unearthed at London's Highgate Cemetery and Environs. I guess those who believe in vampires will regard this as nf but those who don't believe in vampires will call it fiction!

For the purposes of this task, vampirism is not a career

I can't find too much about this book beyond the GR description. How much of this book do you think is about the running/creation of the facilities vs her autobiography?

message 88: by chucklesthescot (new)
