Jennifer wrote: "I never thought about using YouTube. I have checked out a bunch of different ones on comparison charts. I have a basic idea of what I want. But then some always have something the other doesnt!"Best Buy is supposed to have a bunch of different ones on display including the Kindle.
The thing about charts that I don't like is I'm not really sure how unbiased they are. If Sony has a chart of course they're going to write it up in their favor- the same can be said for every other eReader maker.
The comparison charts that I use are ones of their own brands. Like the ones on Borders and Barnes and Noble. I use each companys charts of what they are selling. Then I can compare from those.
Just remember to pick the best one for YOU. I chose the Kindle because a touch screen was unimportant to me, the contrast was better (as compared to Best Buy's displays and amount of glare was less than the others (again, compared to Best Buy's displays). I also like the WiFi with 3G connectivity. It is also pretty fast. I also did not care about a color screen. If a touch screen or color screen is something you need then rule out the Kindle. I also ruled out all of the ereaders that had backlighting (IPad, Literati, etc). I wanted eink only. So, again, think about yourself and what you will be using it for. I wanted an ereader to just read on, so the Kindle was best for me and the price was right for what it could do.
OMG. I love it. I just watched the demo. This guy is a genius. So, if I understand right I could buy an ebook from Barnes and Noble and get it formatted to Kindle? If so, Calibre is about to be mine.
He is a genius! I changed some of my Kindle books to E-Pub so that I could put it on my Sony reader. I couldn't change all of them because of DRM but some is better than done. I've never tried it with Nook books though, Rachel.
Rachel wrote: "OMG. I love it. I just watched the demo. This guy is a genius. So, if I understand right I could buy an ebook from Barnes and Noble and get it formatted to Kindle? But, if you buy an ePub format of a book (like from Sony, kobo, etc.) all you have to do is register all of your devices (non-Kindle) on Adobe Digital Editions and you can keep multiple copies, I believe. You have to have the most recent Adobe- it's even supposed to "sync" all of the pages provided you have an internet connection.
Hmmmm. I see. Well, poopie. I am pretty impatient when it comes to converting, stripping, burning...any of those things. I have an IPod and it is less than half full because I never have the patience to sit there and transfer music to it. Awful...lol.I think when I move back home I will buy a Sony, Nook, or something other than the Kindle. I will definitely need the library loan feature they offer because DFW libraries have ridiculous holds, unlike out here in 'ol, dusty, west Texas. I can walk in right now and find just about any new release on the shelf!

Sashana wrote: "Shay wrote: "Rachel wrote: "OMG. I love it. I just watched the demo. This guy is a genius. Calibre won't do it until it's legal, but they have a way to do it through the back door- like an add-on. I don't know how to do it because it's not legal- although I think it's wrong of the publishing companies to dictate how I use a book I paid for. The illegality has something to do with the fact that the code itself (in the book) is copyrighted, too, in an ebook. Like a software program.
I can definitely see it from the consumer's perspective and the publisher's. It just suck because I'd like to take advantage of more of the free Kindle books but I can't because of stupid DRMs.
Sashana wrote: "I can definitely see it from the consumer's perspective and the publisher's. I noticed, though, that most of the books are eventually free somewhere else at some point.
I have the Kindle for PC but unfortunately I can't use it as much as I want to because of school. I noticed, though, that most of the books are eventually free somewhere else at some point. I agree, but Amazon has a bigger selection of free books than Sony.
You should also check out the free books at www.kobobooks.com . I noticed they sometimes have different free books. Does anyone know if Border's ebooks can be read on the Nook, Sony, etc.?
Sashana wrote: "Thanks, Shay. I'd like to know the answer too if anyone knows."Google is also selling ebooks now. I noticed that one of the books I was looking at was $9.99 at Google and $8.77 at Amazon and B & N. Maybe there's a price was going on. I haven't checked to see if Google has free ebooks, too.
I did some quick pricing:I think that sort of a "standard" discount price for new releases are $9.99 at Amazon and B & N.
Shadowfever: $9.99 (Amazon), $9.10 at Google
The Red Garden: $9.99 (Amazon), $9.00 at Google
I buy so many books that saving even $1 a book is significant over the course of a year. So, I'm going to make sure I compare prices at Google before I buy.
OK, so can I buy a Kindle ebook and read it on a Nook? I found a book I want to read (Switched - Trylle Triology). On B&N site it's $4 on Amazon it's 99c.
Jennifer wrote: "OK, so can I buy a Kindle ebook and read it on a Nook? I found a book I want to read (Switched - Trylle Triology). But that doesn't sound like a public domain books, so there's probably no chance it's not DRM'ed. I ran a search and it's 99 cents at smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...
If there's even the slightest chance that it's an indie author, run a search on smashwords. As you can see the price is better and the author gets a much higher royalty on each book sold. Truly a win-win for everyone.
Did you know the Kobo ereading app is free for using on smartphones, laptops, desktops, pads and readers? They just extended the Share the Love promotion to Feb. 23--send your friends the free ereader app, and for every one you send out you get a chance at winning a $500 Kobo gift card. That's a LOT of ebooks! Here's the link: http://bit.ly/g9YXzq
Thanks for the heads up, Jennifer. Is this a new feature? I know Sony, Kindle, and Nook has the feature.
Did you know, oh you Kindle users, that Amazon is going to download some updates soon? One, I think, is to show page-numbers and the other is to show graphics - or at least make newspapers and magazines more interesting. Apparently the downloads should come in automatically if you have the wireless feature on. Have you ever had a download before? I only got my Kindle at Christmas and I don't think I've ever had one.
Susan wrote: "Did you know, oh you Kindle users, that Amazon is going to download some updates soon? If not you can go to the website to download the update. I have actually heard that they have the update on the website already if you want to download it now.
So today my ex came home with.....a Kindle!!! I was sooo happy! I'm currently reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins on it. It's book 2 of the Hunger Games triology. On the lending, can you only lend a book once? Or once every 2 weeks?
Congrats, Jennifer! Your ex sounds very nice. I'm not 100% sure but I do believe that you can only lend a book once, and once only.
Sashana wrote: "Congrats, Jennifer! Your ex sounds very nice. I'm not 100% sure but I do believe that you can only lend a book once, and once only."Yes, only once and the lending period is 14 days. I'm pretty sure it's 14 days from when you loan it, not from when it's downloaded. So, make sure the recipient is there and not on a two week vacation.
That kinda sucks. It'd be better if you could lend it out as many times as you want. Just keep the 2 week period. Oh well. I have spent a LOT less time online today since I have it. I stayed outside for a couple of hours reading, and talking to the workers putting in a new gas line.My ex can be nice when he wants to be. Wouldn't do him any good to be mean tho! :) I help out (meaning I do 99% of the work) with his 2 youngest kids he has custody of. I have his oldest. This way all the brothers get to be together and I know they are all taken care of!

Recipients have 7 days to accept and 14 days after accepting before the book reverts back to the owner.

I hear ya! I'm seriously thinking about hinting for a Nook for my birthday, or at least Christmas. My birthday is in May. He said he has thought about getting an ereader although he doesn't read much. The Nook 3G is what I really wanted, but he couldn't find a Nook anywhere. Well, they had the display of a Nook that had some wear on it from people handling it and whatnot. So he got the Kindle, a case, and the warrenty. I am still wanting a Nook. My first plan was to get a Nook 3G and then start saving up for a Nook Color (then I could have the best of both worlds)! The kids are hard work. Along with them I work a paper route from 2am-7am. 115 miles of riding back roads that have tons of potholes. I have had 2 hours of sleep in the past 28 hours. I'm wore out. Still have to give the kids a bath, finish cutting coupons to get mailed out tomorrow, and I want to read for a couple of hours. Not enough hours in a day!
I have an emergency!! My Sony PRS 600 won't connect to the Reader Library or my Calibre. What should I do?
Is there a way to see what you actual page would be on a Kindle? OR do I just have to wait until I finish the book to update my status?
Rachel wrote: "LOL. An emergency. Only to us book lovers! :D"My heart literally stopped. Glad that's over.
Jennifer, Kindle is coming out with an update soon that will let you see the actual page numbers. For now when reading an ebook, I change the Goodreads number of pages read feature to the percentage feature. To do this simply click on the word page and it will change to percentage.

I've used comparison charts too. You'd think that I was going to buy a car or a house. That's how much research I did.
