Kelley Anne | 1619 comments So as a lot of you know, I listen to a TON of audio books. LOVE them! Well, my library now has a thing with overdrive.com where you can download audiobooks. Today was the first time I tried it out and I just have a question for anyone else that has used it before!

So the book that I picked and downloaded was one that I was able to then put on my ipod. It says that my check out period is for 21 days. What happens after 21 days? Does it somehow disappear from my ipod? Or do I still have it on there, but just don't have access to it anymore on the overdrive software?

Jess | 3721 comments I believe it just won't play anymore and you have to delete it from your ipod and from the computer.

Jess is right. You'll no longer be able to access it after 21 days and it gets removed from your Overdrive bookshelf. Still have to delete from the Ipod though. I love Overdrive too!

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Good to know! Thanks! I wonder how they make it so that it no longer will play on your ipod? Hmmm....

it's something in the coding. they do the same sort of thing with game trials, they're set to not be playable after a certain number of times, or a set time period.

Sarah | 766 comments I think it's the DRM (Digital Rights Management) part of the download. It's what sets the publisher limits on the media that affects how the end user can use the download. Tricksy programing stuffs.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I love overdrive I have never used the audiobooks but I love it for ebooks on my nook.

Like everyone else said it does expire and you get a message that says you can no longer read the material. However the nice part is if you finish sooner you can return it and check out more books.

message 8: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Do you get Overdrive through your public library? I do, and my librarian said that you download the file onto your computer, where it corrupts after 21 days. BUT if you put it on another device the corruption file gets "lost" and you have it forever. I haven't got any other devices to put these things on, so I don't know if she's telling the truth, but hey! She's a librarian!

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 766 comments Depends on the device. She's only partly right. If you have an eReader like a Nook or a Sony, the file also freezes or "corrupts" on the reader. Same if you're listening to audio on an iPod or Zune. These devices are build to be a little smarter about DRM coding in downloads, so they recognize the restrictions.

If you use a generic MP3 player, though, the file stays on the player, and you can listen past the due date. My cheapo SanDisk, for example, still has the original audiobook I downloaded and never got around to reading! If I delete it from the player, it's gone until I borrow that book again.

Also for audio, some publishers allow you to download the file and burn it to a disk. I'm sure they expect you to destroy the disks, but honestly, who's gonna do that? You could keep those for as long as you wanted on disc.

message 10: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I do wish the books would just magically disappear.

@Sarah re:burn to discs that is funny! You know I am to lazy to burn them to a disk if it is not on my ipod or in my itunes library I don't have it lol.

My son uses netlibrary he loves audio books so that maybe another option for you audio book lovers.

message 11: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Right now I have the books on my ipod, but I do have an old generic mp3 player that I haven't used in a few years. Maybe I'll try adding a couple of them to that and see what happens.

message 12: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) | 106 comments I do this through my library site. After the set number of days, it will expire and you won't have access to it through overdrive. I haven't burned any on discs yet, but alot of the books I have gotten, I didn't care for enough to try and keep them.

message 13: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments So far for me (and I use it regularly) they stay on Itunes or Windows media player (we have an IPOD and a Sansa Fuze) until I delete them. But the overdrive player will remove them automatically on the expiration date. so you should be able to go over that time as long as you have transferred them to your player.

message 14: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments You know what now that I think about it-I have never transferred on to my IPOD. The overdrive ones that I've listened to on my IPOD have been ones I burned to a rewritable CD. But I got my daughter a Fuze for Christmas and since she doesn't use it much-I've been putting them on there and they stay after they expire.

I couldn't get the transfer to IPOD thing to work on my old computer and I'm not ready to move Itunes and my IPOD onto my new computer (I've got too much stuff on there that I want to keep on my IPOD and haven't gotten around to burning it to discs yet)

Sarah | 766 comments iPods are the tricky ones. They accept the MP3 format downloads pretty easy, but you have to convert the WMA format books before they work. Plus you have to set iTunes to manually manage downloads or something. OverDrive has the instructions for it.

I wish there were an industry standard for downloadable audio. Kinda like the standard for eBooks is the EPUB format. It would make transfers so much easier, IMHO.

message 16: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments With setting itunes to manually manage downloads, that's how I have my ipod set up anyways. I have so much info on my ipod, that I would hate leaving all of that on my computer all of the time. Plus I have two different computers that I tend to use to add things to my ipod.

So over the last few weeks, I've downloaded about 8 audio books to my ipod. One of them expired a few days ago. But so far it's still working on my ipod. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays like that! I haven't added anything new though to it since this one expired, so who knows. Maybe as soon as I plug the ipod into the computer, my computer might recognize that it has expired and it will stop working. We'll see. I have two more that expire within a few more days. But overall, I am really impressed with overdrive! I need to get to the store to buy some blank disks though so that I can burn my own copies of some of these, incase they stop working on my ipod!

message 17: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I think my issue with putting it on the ipod was how much space the books take up of the memory. And it's also annoying to have to switch to manually manage downloads.

Although, there is something wrong with my ipod at the moment so maybe that has something to do with the annoyance of using overdrive.

Sarah | 766 comments Has anyone tried to read eBooks on an iPhone or iPod Touch yet? My library is having trouble figuring out if eBooks can download to the Apple mobile stuff, or how they can. We've never successfully done it if it is possible. :(

message 19: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (last edited Aug 25, 2010 06:43PM) (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Yes it is possible there are several you tube videos on how to do it.

I have a droid phone and while I can rad read documents (or e-books) I only read them when I have to, it is never a first choice.

message 20: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments My mom has an iPhone and she has the kindle app on it and reads books on there, but I haven't tried downloading anything else for her, like from the library.

message 21: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) The Overdrive Media console automatically transfers WMA to be able to be listened to on iPods. I haven't had an issue with that.

After the period of time for the checked out item expires, the audio book will not delete from the iPod or iPhone. I often carry around numerous library audio books past their check out date -- I delete them though when I am done listening to them. And you need to be careful, I always automatically transfer from the Media Console to my iPhone or iPod, b/c if I forget or wait until I am ready to listen to it, it may have expired and be deleted from the Overdrive Media Console. It is such a great system and so much preferable to audio CDs!

message 22: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Oh, there is also an App for the iPhone from Overdrive, so you can automatically check out books from your iPhone from the libary and not even use the computer!

The Kindle format is not available through overdrive.com, so I doubt if you could read anything on a Kindle app available through overdrive.com on an iPhone. Now the Sony, Kobo and Nook read the formats available though overdrive.com -- I do not know if they would be accessible through their apps on an iPhone though. However, all these ereaders are now much less expensive than the brand new iPhones!

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 766 comments The problem we're trying to figure out with iPhones is that a message comes up saying you can't directly download the eBook to the iPhone. I'm assuming that means it has to download to a computer, then transfer to the iPhone. But I'm not sure.

message 24: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Definitely. But you won't be able to read any overdrive ebook on a kindle or a kindle app.

message 25: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Sarah that is odd, and you are downloading the application for mobile? It is rather new looks like they just put it out at the end of July, here is the link

I hope that helps :-)
