Jess is right. You'll no longer be able to access it after 21 days and it gets removed from your Overdrive bookshelf. Still have to delete from the Ipod though. I love Overdrive too!

it's something in the coding. they do the same sort of thing with game trials, they're set to not be playable after a certain number of times, or a set time period.

Like everyone else said it does expire and you get a message that says you can no longer read the material. However the nice part is if you finish sooner you can return it and check out more books.

If you use a generic MP3 player, though, the file stays on the player, and you can listen past the due date. My cheapo SanDisk, for example, still has the original audiobook I downloaded and never got around to reading! If I delete it from the player, it's gone until I borrow that book again.
Also for audio, some publishers allow you to download the file and burn it to a disk. I'm sure they expect you to destroy the disks, but honestly, who's gonna do that? You could keep those for as long as you wanted on disc.

@Sarah re:burn to discs that is funny! You know I am to lazy to burn them to a disk if it is not on my ipod or in my itunes library I don't have it lol.
My son uses netlibrary he loves audio books so that maybe another option for you audio book lovers.

I couldn't get the transfer to IPOD thing to work on my old computer and I'm not ready to move Itunes and my IPOD onto my new computer (I've got too much stuff on there that I want to keep on my IPOD and haven't gotten around to burning it to discs yet)

I wish there were an industry standard for downloadable audio. Kinda like the standard for eBooks is the EPUB format. It would make transfers so much easier, IMHO.

So over the last few weeks, I've downloaded about 8 audio books to my ipod. One of them expired a few days ago. But so far it's still working on my ipod. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays like that! I haven't added anything new though to it since this one expired, so who knows. Maybe as soon as I plug the ipod into the computer, my computer might recognize that it has expired and it will stop working. We'll see. I have two more that expire within a few more days. But overall, I am really impressed with overdrive! I need to get to the store to buy some blank disks though so that I can burn my own copies of some of these, incase they stop working on my ipod!

Although, there is something wrong with my ipod at the moment so maybe that has something to do with the annoyance of using overdrive.

I have a droid phone and while I can rad read documents (or e-books) I only read them when I have to, it is never a first choice.

After the period of time for the checked out item expires, the audio book will not delete from the iPod or iPhone. I often carry around numerous library audio books past their check out date -- I delete them though when I am done listening to them. And you need to be careful, I always automatically transfer from the Media Console to my iPhone or iPod, b/c if I forget or wait until I am ready to listen to it, it may have expired and be deleted from the Overdrive Media Console. It is such a great system and so much preferable to audio CDs!

The Kindle format is not available through overdrive.com, so I doubt if you could read anything on a Kindle app available through overdrive.com on an iPhone. Now the Sony, Kobo and Nook read the formats available though overdrive.com -- I do not know if they would be accessible through their apps on an iPhone though. However, all these ereaders are now much less expensive than the brand new iPhones!

I hope that helps :-)
So the book that I picked and downloaded was one that I was able to then put on my ipod. It says that my check out period is for 21 days. What happens after 21 days? Does it somehow disappear from my ipod? Or do I still have it on there, but just don't have access to it anymore on the overdrive software?
