Laura | 9 comments I've been combining editions for several authors and have hit a snag. Specifically, on the Dick Francis combine editions page, some of the books refuse to combine together. Most notably Proof and For Kicks. I've tried several times and I've noticed on the Librarian Change Log that several other people have tried too, so I don't think it is my computer. However, I could be doing something wrong. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Hmm. I see your point re the Dick Francis books. I don't have time to research it this weekend, but I have noticed that (if it's not that the authors have different spellings) that books sometimes cannot be combined if they have the same ISBNs. Those conflicting books sometimes cannot be combined but need to be merged/combined with one another before combining them with the book as a whole.

Somebody may want to check this out to see if that's the issue with these particular books.

If so, please send links to the "offending" books and post for super librarians to combine/delete/combine to this thread:

Laura | 9 comments Thanks, I didn't even realize it was possible to create books with the same isbn number.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Laura, Well, when we manually enter them it isn't, but sometimes duplicates do get into the database.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments They appeared to be the same. Managed to combine and then delete the duplicate that had ISBN 10 only & no cover.

JG, I've found sometimes the edition to be deleted needs to have their ISBN deleted before combing. Not always. But it's happened a few times recently. You can try that if the ISBNs of the editions you want to combine are the same/even if only ISBN 10 OR ISBN 13 show for one of the editions.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Because it will usually not let you combine books with identical ISBNs you often have to remove the ISBN from one of the books (presumably the one you wish to delete) before combining. The other thing you can sometimes try is simply "editing" one of the books; you don't even have to make a change, just go to the edit screen and hit save. This will sometimes clear out a conflict by resetting something within the database cache.

Thanks for the tip Michael! I knew about deleting of the duplicate ISBN in the edition to be deleted, but not this technique.
